Biggest scam of Modi government

Congress and stooge media have nexus. Here people sell out for money for their own benefits without even thinking what effects it will have on the country. Our system lacks accountability and there are too many loopholes. NDTV Good Times turn bad times. No more calendar girls

Wonderful. Blame the system. They had two years but....

Do you even know BJP gave the most number of votes to make him become the RS MP?

BJP, JD(S) join hands to make Mallya win Rajya Sabha seat

Bangalore:
vijaymallyastory.jpg

One of the big winners on Thursday in the Rajya Sabha elections was liquor baron Vijay Mallya, who contested as an Independent and was backed by the JD(S) and the BJP, but it was not all easy going for the King of Good Times.

Commenting on his victory Vijay Mallya said, "I am obviously very happy. I am privileged to serve my home state again. I served the state with best interests at heart during my last term. I actually published a book on the questions I raised in Parliament and circulated the book to MLAs. I believe in accountability. People have reposed their faith in me."

Anything is possible in politics. And that includes two parties -- JD(S) and the BJP-- putting aside their bitter coalition history to assure Mallya of good times ahead, by both supporting his candidature to the Rajya Sabha.

"Mallya is not a JD(S) candidate, he is an Independent candidate. We want Congress candidate to be defeated," said Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa on Mallya's candidature.

The state BJP is clearly putting a brave front on things after carrying out the directive of their central command despite the resistance of many in the state unit. But Mallya said he did not care why the votes came to him -- just that they did.

"At the end of the day I think it is wrong to make a big political issue out of who joined hands with whom, because I am an Independent," said Mallya.

When asked that the victory is more of an anti-Congress vote than a pro-Mallya vote, he said, "Is media supposed to adjudicate of where I get my votes from. Do you run the Parliament of India?"

The BJP's Venkaiah Naidu and Ayanur Manjunath also made it to the Upper House easily. As did Congress veteran Oscar Fernandes.

The biggest point of interest in the Rajya Sabha elections in Karnataka was the candidature of the flamboyant Vijay Mallya. As an Independent candidate, he managed to get the backing of both the JD(S) and the BJP, making them unlikely partners in getting him into the Rajya Sabha.

No need to play devil's advocate ;). But BJP is idiot too in many ways. They need more time in power to understand problems in the country clearly. Which will come out slowly with time. Also they need to make sure there is no corruption within.

.
All the people speaking here should know that a look out notice can be enacted only after an arrest warrant is issued, and no YBcourts have issued an arrest warrant to him, and legally vijay mallya cannot be held accountable because the previous govt recommended mallya for granting loans, and loans have been granted by mortgaging king fisher brand:hitwall: and not much of his personal property, there is no court ruling restricting his movement :hitwall: congress and mallya together looted the public money now blaming modi that he has not recovered the loan when loans were given by congress appointed bank officers, when the bjp govt is taking steps to recover loans from big names congress is worried that many business men among them are close to congress.

. .
Nonsense to call it a modi scam......Having said that, BJP would have said the same if it was congress in power......
He got loans on his own guarantee . He got loans on the brand name of Kingfisher, same brand which was created by media, his certain sponsered channels and shows, with the same money he got. Although the company was always at loss.

And now NDTV is diverging it, projecting it as a blame game between BJP and Congress instead of pin pointing the real issue. This is how much freaked up some media channels are.

.
From what i understand the kingfisher house will be auctioned on 17th march with the base price of 150 cr.
While his kingfisher villa in goa is said to be valued at 90 cr.

These are such a peanuts amount. How are the consortium planning to recover the money of 7000 crore ?

The big money has already left the country. KF villa/house auctioning is just a face saver.

I think there is a structural problem that exists in our economy.
Large borrowers in our country having political affinity can usually get away even on default of payment and this leads to stress on balance sheets with accumulation of Bad Loans.

If you see closely, you'll find that apart from Businesses (Large, Medium and Small) and Agriculture, others (this category includes individuals) are biggest contributors.View attachment 298138 View attachment 298140

Corrective measures
Under existing laws, it is very difficult to simply windup a business and declare insolvency, where lenders can actually take possession of assets and move for recovery of loan.

To correct this, a new Bankruptcy bill is already pending in Parliament and hopefully it will get passed in this session.

As i said above, it is a structural problem requiring a structural change in laws and imho, i'm not sure if current or previous governments are to be blamed, other than the fact that an urgency in this matter should've been shown long back.

@Rain Man @Levina @nair

If this guy can get away with strategic default when we do not have a formal bankruptcy law then just think about how worse it would be after Modi government brings in the new bankruptcy law? Crony capitalism is as worse as Communism.

Just think how many small farmer loans could have been excused and how many farmer deaths could have been prevented with the same amount.

LOL Banks are in debt cause loans were given during Congi time..Come on..

So we come from BJP being an uncorrupt party which would bring back black money to the point where BJP is less corrupt than congress. What a fall..

No need to play devil's advocate ;). But BJP is idiot too in many ways. They need more time in power to understand problems in the country clearly. Which will come out slowly with time. Also they need to make sure there is no corruption within.

If a goon commits a murder in front of a policeman and walks away, then would we say the policeman is clean because he did not commit the crime?

I am not going to give the clean chit to BJP yet

1) FM and VM were part of the same cozy cricket club

2) BJP supported his RS ticket in 2010 by which time it was very clear he was a strategic defaulter

3) The video I have posted says that the look out notices have been amended to allow VM to leave the country.

Well yes you are right somewhat. But atleast banks are waking up now under current gov. pressure. Although there should have been strict action. This should have been done in 2012. And after all this he is enjoying fully in his bunglows in UK. Tweeting against media for shaming him for partying with girls even after being under huge debt. But he is shameless enough to run away without paying Indian employees (he cleared all dues of foreign employees). Busy promoting British services. Ever seen such wonderful MP? While normal people are jailed or forced to suicide even for few thousands. And some people still believe he is going to pay up in future. NDTV is very silent on this issue, just like on Ishrat case. If this had even slightest of BJP linkage, they would had created chaos. So much for liberal media.

But he might not be alone. There are loopholes for sure, and the money bit by bit keeps flowing out of country. And people for their own benefit remain silent intentionaly or too idiot to understand how it affects whole country. This is what is called corruption. Seriously i hope someday people in this country give up "chalta hai" and "mujhe kya" attitude.

This reminds me of the saying- if take a small loan from a bank but can't afford to pay it, you have a problem but if you take a large loan (10s of millions) and can't afford to pay, the bank has a problem.

Why did PM Modi agree to give away India’s patent sovereignty to Americans?

by G Pramod Kumar Oct 8, 2014 11:33 IST

With the hype of his Madison Square Garden show overshadowing everything else, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit was dubbed as a great bilateral victory for India. As the popular consensus went, Modi wowed both the Indian Americans and American politicians and even managed to get a joint op-ed article with President Barack Obama in the Washington Post stressing the importance of the partnership between the two countries.

Was it really a huge socio-economic and political success for India? There can be two opinions about it, however at least in one extraordinarily crucial sector, India is going to terribly lose. The agreement with the US in the sector will affect India’s sovereignty and the lives of its present and future generations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Image courtesy PIB

The sector in question is Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Take a look at the following text from the joint statement by the US and India after Modi met with Obama.

"The leaders discussed their concerns about the current impasse in the World Trade Organization and its effect on the multilateral trading system, and directed their officials to consult urgently along with other WTO members on the next steps. The leaders committed to work through the Trade Policy Forum to promote a business environment attractive for companies to invest and manufacture in India and in the United States. Agreeing on the need to foster innovation in a manner that promotes economic growth and job creation, the leaders committed to establish an annual high-level Intellectual Property (IP) Working Group with appropriate decision-making and technical-level meetings as part of the Trade Policy Forum."

The devil is in the detail. It talks about a high level bilateral working group on intellectual property. While India has been proud of its intellectual property regime, that abides by multilateral agreements such as those at WTO, and TRIPS flexibilities, why should it have a committee to discuss it with the US? More over, the decision comes at a time when activists in India have been demanding more robust action on intellectual property rights, particularly in pharma sector so that more people can access lifesaving medication.

The decision to set up the committee is a complete sell out to the US interests because India had decided not to cooperate with an earlier investigation by the US International Trade Commission (USITC) into India's IP issues. The investigation was titled'Trade, Investment and Industrial Policies in India: Effects on the US Economy', and the USITC had even conducted a public hearing. The investigation was necessitated by a joint letter by the Senate Committee on Finance and the House Committee on Ways and Means in August 2013. In their Joint Letter, these Committees requested USITC to prepare a fact-finding investigation report on India by 30 November 2014.

On IP protection and enforcement, the letter, said: "India has not yet taken action to fully and effectively protect and enforce copyrights, including in the digital environment and has applied its patent law in a discriminatory manner, particularly against innovative US pharmaceutical companies, so as to advantage its domestic industries. It also said that “Beyond any particular action India has taken, the Government has enunciated a broader policy objective to develop and support Indian domestic industry by forcing foreign firms to use local facilities and suppliers and to transfer their intellectual property to Indian entities."

With the USITC investigation and the pressure from domestic lobbies - both political and economic - it was very clear that the US wanted Indian IP policies to change in such a way that it benefited the most. For the Americans, it has been a thorn in the flesh that obstructed their free wheeling trade practices.

The most dangerous aspect of the proposed committee that India has agreed to is the empowerment for decision-making. Why should the US be allowed a role on India’s decision making responsibilities in IP?

One of the worst hit, if this committee moves forward and makes decisions that tinker with the existing IP policy, will be the pharma industry. In the recent past, the country has seen how a conducive IP policy, that doesn’t violate international conventions, has greatly helped millions of people who are in need for urgent modern medical care. The compulsory licensing (in simple terms, breaking the patent of an MNC company because of domestic medical needs) of a couple of drugs have brought down their prices manifold and there is demand for more such decisions from healthcare activists. The US pharma lobby has been wrongfully going to town against such decisions saying that India doesn't respect patent and innovation.

It was the existing IP policy that helped build India’s pharma industry, which now is the lifeline for not only the country’s healthcare needs, but also that of most of the developing world. This regime is extremely crucial for ensuring an enabling environment for the pharma industry because it is still not capable of developing new drugs on its own given the poor resources at its disposal.

For the manufacturing sector, the present Patent Act is important to access technology, particularly the climate friendly technologies that the joint agreement is talking about. Regarding agriculture, India’s existing regime is important to deny patent to seeds that otherwise would tie farmers to the stranglehold of MNC companies. The existing regime is also favourable to Indian biotech companies.

Ever since the Indian supreme court dismissed Swiss pharma company Novartis patent plea for its cancer drug Glivec last year, there has been intense pressure on India from the US pharma companies. The US industry and trade bodies have tried to depict India as an IP-rogue whereas the reality was that India always complied with multilateral agreements that it was party to.

The Supreme Court order that rejected the Novartis plea was remarkable for its vision, when it said: "We certainly do not wish the law of patent in this country to develop on the lines where there may be a vast gap between the coverage and the disclosure under the patent; where the scope of the patent is determined not on the intrinsic worth of the invention but by the artful drafting of its claims by skillful lawyers, and where patents are traded as a commodity not for production and marketing of the patented products but to search for someone who may be sued for infringement of the patent."

The ITC investigation was a result of the pressure from the US lobbies and the Indian government (under Manmohan Singh) rightfully refused to cooperate with it. Now, by agreeing to a joint committee that will oversee Indian patent policy, India has dangerously opened its policy space to the Americans.

It certainly doesn’t augur well for India and Indians.

Why did Modi agree to give away India’s patent sovereignty to Americans?

Narendra Modi and Monsanto: Making India Friendly to Global Capital

Immediately prior to Narendra Modi being elected India’s PM last year, there were calls from some quarters for him to usher in a Thatcherite-style revolution. The hope was that he would accelerate the trend of privatisation, sops and tax breaks to business, deregulation, land and labour reforms, etc., and would also eradicate ‘blockages’ to various projects (i.e. remove dissent and relax or do away with existing procedures).

What Margaret Thatcher did in the eighties was to make Britain friendly to global capital. Global financial institutions became the mainstay of the economy and much local manufacturing industry was offshored. Under Thatcher, anti-trade union legislation, welfare reforms and pro-business policies became the order of the day. Three decades on and Britain has one of Western Europe’s most ‘flexible’ workforces in terms of a lack of protection and rights.

Thatcher’s policies helped to deindustrialise Britain and financialise the nation with a deregulated and corrupt City of London finance sector being a key driver of the economy. The result is record corporate profits, an unofficial unemployment rate of 30 percent, high personal debt, bank bail outs, stagnant demand, increasing national debt and ‘austerity’ for the masses. Any semblance of democratic rights that did exist have become gradually eroded as global capital increasingly dictates.

What happened in Britain is part of a global trend whereby sovereign states have become hollowed out and made supine in the face of transnational corporate power. Various ‘free trade’ agreements have by-passed (NAFTA) or are about to (TTIP, TPA) by-pass the last vestiges of national sovereignty as ‘regulatory barriers’ and ‘investor trade rights’ will essentially mean that major political decisions that affect every aspect of people’s lives could be moved to the technocratic sphere and taken by unaccountable tribunals and committees behind closed doors in Brussels, Washington and elsewhere.

The Knowledge Initiative on Agriculture and the proposed EU-India trade agreement will have a similar impact in India. These secretive, non-transparent deals will effectively hand over major policy areas to committees whose members comprise major financial-industrial enterprises or bureaucrat-politicians acting on their behalf. Such initiatives represent an extension and acceleration of trends that have been happening in India since the early 1990s and the introduction of neo-liberal economic policies.

India has been under pressure from US-dominated international bodies to restructure its agriculture and retail sectors to benefit the likes of Monsanto, Cargill and Walmart for some time. The requirement is that India reduces subsidies and tariffs and introduces a market-driven approach to agriculture and bring it under corporate control. This will effectively mean that faced with unfair trade rules and heavily subsidised Western agriculture, farming in India will continue to be increasingly financially non-viable and farmers will continue to leave the industry.

The system of agriculture envisaged to replace the indigenous model will consist of large-scale industrial farms based on genetically modified seeds and the heavy use of petrochemical inputs. Mechanisation in agriculture and food processing, courtesy of Western companies, will destroy tens of millions of jobs.

Factor in those displaced from farming itself and one is led to wonder what these people will do to earn a living once having migrated to the cities. India cannot create sufficient jobs as it is to soak up entrants to the workforce and given the increasing automation of employment, the situation seems likely to get worse. As in Britain, any ‘Thatcherite-style revolution’ is destined to throw large sections of the population onto the scrapheap as society is recast in a pro-corporate image.

It all raises the question why is this being done? India already produces enough to feed itself, and even where it does import foodstuffs, this is often because of the impact of political decisions and trade policy which means the country no longer grows certain items. Hundreds of millions are employed in agriculture, food processing or related sectors, and if they are currently in poverty, this again is partly a direct result of policies that have opted to put resources elsewhere, for instance to help industry which has failed to deliver in terms of jobs or exports.

Given the numbers employed in farming, food processing and small-scale retail, these sectors form the backbone of Indian society. The Modi administration should bear in mind that once farmers have been sacrificed on the altar of corporate profit and Monsanto has been allowed to genetically modify the food system, there will be no going back.GM agriculture is a scam. Steven Druker has shown in his book ‘Altered Genes, Twisted Truth‘ that it was placed onto the commercial market in the US due to fraudulent activities. It is a danger to health and the environment and as currently employed there is no advantage to be gained from it. The only benefits go to the agribusiness cartel who can patent seeds that they ‘invented’, or pirate seeds and ‘reinvent’ them, and sell their associated cancer-causing chemical inputs. Where is the sense in India selling out the nation’s farmers and food sovereignty to Monsanto?

Writing in The Hindu last year, Aruna Rodrigues noted that the Technical Expert Committee (TEC) Final Report (FR) is the fourth official report exposing the lack of integrity, independence and scientific expertise in assessing GMO risk (see here). The four reports are: The ‘Jairam Ramesh Report’ of February 2010, imposing an indefinite moratorium on Bt Brinjal, overturning the apex Regulator’s approval to commercialise it; the Sopory Committee Report (August 2012); the Parliamentary Standing Committee (PSC) Report on GM crops (August 2012) and the TEC Final Report (June-July 2013).And yet, open field trials have been given the green light, dissent is being trodden on and Modi has proclaimed that GM represents a good business-investment opportunity.

Does anyone smell a rat? They should.Vandana Shiva highlights the arm twisting that has gone on in an attempt to force through GMOs into India, with various politicians having been pushed aside until the dotted line for GMO open field testing approval was signed on. Of course, Modi is only accelerating what former PM Manmohan Singh had set in motion – a politician whose pro-GMO policies are regarded by Arun Shrivastava as total treachery. However, much of urban India seems oblivious to it all.

Duplicitous politicians are clever at using poor management, bad administration and overblown or inept bureaucracies as a proxy for privatising and deregulated everything. Thatcher was an expert at this: if something does not work correctly because of bad management, privatise it; underinvest in something, make it seem like a basket case and privatise it; pump up a sector with public investment to turn it into a profitable, efficient enterprise (then describe it as a massive drain on the taxpayer) then sell it off to the private sector. The tactics and ideology of and the justification for neoliberal economic policies take many forms.

Similarly, due to neglect and under-investment, rural India is too often depicted as a failure and a drain on the economy and thus ripe for a corporate takeover. It was the British who introduced mono-cropping and began to devastate local systems of food self-sufficiency and the dynamism of the village economy. Post-independence, successive administrations have done little to reverse this trend. However, despite the sector being deliberately run down, agriculture still manages to deliver bumper harvests, as food and trade policy analyst Devinder Sharma describes here.

Some 300, 000 farmers have committed suicide since 1997 as a result of spiralling debt, a shift to (GM) cash crops and the introduction of neoliberal economics, yet as long as food remains relatively cheap, thanks to the neglected, impoverished farmer, and people have enough disposable income to buy a 100 rupees coffee in a fancy long-neck glass at the latest swish shopping mall, who cares? Out of sight, out of mind. (Hundreds of millions in rural India live on less than 100 rupees a day.) Government priorities lie elsewhere.

Many leading politicians at the helm in India are (wittingly or unwittingly) serving US interests. Those who are ultimately setting the agenda in the US have designed a type of global capitalism that, from Syria and Ukraine to the US and India, increasingly incorporates barbarity and militarism and displays tendencies towards corporate feudalism and political fascism. The goal to secure control over global food and agriculture is very much part of the designs of an interlocking directorate of state-corporate interests in the West who through trade agreements or militarism, or a combination of both, seek to colonise and control all facets of life, not least food and agriculture. Look no further than Monsanto’s gains in Ukraine on the back of a US-led coup and its position in Iraq and Afghanistan on the back of illegal invasions. Or read Steven MacMillan’s piece about Monsanto’s connections to the US military-industrial complex and the globalists.

Writing in 2014, MacMillan said:

On Monsanto’s Board of Directors sits the former Chairman of the Board and CEO of the giant war contractor Lockheed Martin, Robert J. Stevens, who was also appointed in 2012 by Barack Obama to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. As well as epitomising the revolving door that exists between the US Government and private trans-national corporations, Stevens is a member of the parallel government in the US, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). A second board member at Monsanto is Gwendolyn S. King, who also sits on the board of Lockheed Martin where she chairs the Orwellian ‘Ethics and Sustainability Committee”. Individuals who are veterans of the corporate war industry should not be allowed control over any populations food supply! Additionally, Monsanto board member Dr. George H. Poste is a former member of the Defense Science Board and the Health Board of the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the CFR.

By having US companies dominate supply lines and control food and seeds through patenting – and by controlling commodity markets – Washington is in a position to use food as a weapon. And it is clear from the above quotation that Monsanto is a key component of a highly weaponised US global geopolitical strategy. With this in mind, let us cast our minds back to 2006 when Hugo Chavez addressed the UN General Assembly. In recommending Noam Chomsky’s book ‘Hegemony and Survival’, he stated:

It’s an excellent book to help us understand what has been happening in the world throughout the 20th century, and what’s happening now, and the greatest threat looming over our planet… the American empire is doing all it can to consolidate its system of domination. And we cannot allow them to do that. We cannot allow world dictatorship to be consolidated.

As a nation, when you rely on foreign corporations for your food and seeds, you rely on them to determine its price, its supply and what is in it (for instance, ‘terminator’ trait technology or the Epicyte ‘sterility’ gene.)In the style of the late Hugo Chavez, perhaps it’s time for someone to publicly recommend William F Engdahl’s book ‘Seeds of Destruction: The Hidden Agenda of Genetic Manipulation’ to Narendra Modi. Like Chomsky’s book, it too discusses threats and domination. It locates the GM issue and the ‘green revolution’ firmly within the context of empire via the destruction of indigenous agriculture and its replacement with a model dominated by US agribusiness. Engdahl also locates the Rockefeller-Gates hand behind the great GMO project to a sinister eugenicist strategy of depopulation.

However, it must be assumed that reading this book would have little impact. You kind of get the impression that Modi, like Singh, before him is already on board with ‘the project’.

Actually truth lies somewhere between all the arguments flying in this forum. VM is person who has cultivated contacts across political spectrum and utilized it.

Next litmus test for NDA govt to catch congress MP Naveen Jindal group who have just defaulted on 35K Cr loan. Banks have started moving the things to recover the money.

.
Modi government has been in power for 2 years now. What were they doing?

And the people who scream from roof tops about congress vimukt bharat conveniently have allowed the person to leave the country.

Within 2 days of taking power, Modi government signs the drug agreement but does not have time to enforce the law.
Take your politics elsewhere.

.
Get out of here with this BS. You want scams....how convenient you ignore how under Congress the Minister of Civil aviation gave UAE a green light to take over Indian skies. Where the fuk was the outcry then? You corrupt BShitters can go suck on it. Congress ran this country to the ground for 60 f-king years yet you expect miracles to pop up overnight ...gtfo!

Malaya was given these loans under Congress.

It is not the politics but the performance of the government that is at stake.

If BJP does not introspect and change its policies, sooner than later, it would go the congress way.

Don't you think the outcry of the people was heard at the last elections which gave BJP full majority for the first time in 30 years?

To some degree but it took how much damage to provoke that reaction? As for Mallaya, he will never be able to run away like Quattrochi did? Malaya may be a crook I don't know. but he got some patriotism in him. He did his level best to put India on the map internationally. I won't forget that part. Neither should you
