I can't say about the Poles but the Ukro-Russian divide stems from the Holodomor (artificial famine orchestrated by Stalin's collectivization policies in the Ukrain to sieze crops ans grains from Kulaks).

Russia do not want to be leader of Slavic world. Because there are no Slavic world, it was romantic idea of 19 ct. Many Russian died for the freedom of Slavic nations, but they betrayed Russia, except Serbs - they are proud, loyal and tough people.

I think Russia would be majority slavic if Ukrain and Belarus reunite with the Russian federation however I'm not too sure they want that at this point. They are more interested in joining EU, at least Ukrain is

Well, that is why Putin have started federal migration programs for Russians from former Soviet Union. I remember some Western predictions in 90's they said Russian will be 100 mln in 2050. Now they say 130 mln. But - I agree, it is a problem. We need more Russian babies.
