Beijing will ban coal use in its six main districts by the end of 2020, state media cited the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau as saying, as the Chinese capital steps up efforts to combat air pollution.

Beijing and the surrounding area in China's northeast is often wreathed in noxious smog, which has been cited as a factor in high rates of lung cancer.

Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chaoyang, Haidian, Fengtai and Shijingshan districts will all stop using coal and coal products and shut down coal-fired power plants and other coal facilities, the official Xinhua news agency said on Monday.

In 2012, coal made up one-quarter of the city's total energy consumption, Xinhua quoted official statistics as saying.

Fuel oil, petroleum coke, combustible waste and some biomass fuels will also be prohibited as part of the effort to fight pollution, Xinhua said.

. .
That's a shame, there are new clean coal technologies.

Clean coal technology costs money to use, and may make other forms of energy more competitive. Anything that improves the bad air quality in Chinese cities would be a good thing.

Very good point, especially considering the pollution situation there.

This is very bad situation for us, after all Indonesia is one of the main supplier of coal for China and this decision will make the coal prices will not competitive anymore.

year reduce using non-recoverable energy ...
good move indeed ... congrat China

it says only six districts. How many provinces are there totally.

Development nuclear energy
Nuclear energy is not that clean. There is always a risk of accident happening, look at Soviet and Japan. And the nuclear waste is hard and costly to be disposed.

There are more than 450 nuclear power plants, only two out of the accident, the Soviet Union and Japan in the world.
The Chernobyl accident was caused by human reason,
Fukushima was caused by the earthquake. So, you say, and not as a reason to hinder the development of civilian nuclear energy

Coal will run out one day

Don't forget the American nuclear plant meltdown in Three Mile Island.

I never oppose the development of nuclear energy. I just want to say that we should never stop looking for new alternative sources of energy, instead of solely depending on nuclear power.
