B'desh Seeks Enhanced Defence Cooperation With India | news.outlookindia.com

PTI | Anisur Rahman | Dhaka | Mar 19, 2012

Bangladesh today sought enhanced defence cooperation with India, including boosting training facilities for its air wing as Indian Air Force Chief Air Marshal NAK Browne called on the country's top political leadership and military brass here.

The IAF Chief arrived here yesterday on a four-day official visit to Bangladesh to expand bilateral defence cooperation.

During his meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart Air Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman today, Browne "exchanged views and discussed matters of professional interest".

Bangladesh sought enhanced defence cooperation with India, including more exchange of training facilities with IAF.

Indian Air Chief called on President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

"President Zillur Rahman laid emphasis on exchange of training facilities for the officers of Bangladesh and Indian Air Forces," the President's spokesman told PTI.

The spokesman said the president pointed out that "significant number" of officiers of Bangladesh Air Force underwent training in India since 1974 while many officials from India took part in training in Bangladesh.

Browne, the spokesman said, told the president that the exchange of training and experience-sharing between the air force officers of the two countries would continue in the future.

The IAF chief later called on Hasina who said her government always valued the friendship and cooperation with the neighbouring countries and underlined Dhaka's firm stance against terrorism.

"The Prime Minister said her government is placing emphasis on meeting the basic needs of the common people along with developing our armed forces," a PMO spokesman told reporters after the meeting at Hasina's residence.

Bangladesh should not have any collaboration with india when it comes to defense. Less than that is in traitor territory, which makes Bangladesh awami league the traitor of the country. We should all unite and chase hasina and her family to the bay of bengal so that they can drown in peace.

????.........

Defense contacts makes it easier for armies to collaborate. These cadets who pass from Indian academies will form friendship which come in handy once both officers rise up the ranks. That makes it easier to continue the chain of collaboration.

It is one way to remove hostility and have a friendly officer core in the long run :)

First, I would like to thank Bangladeshis for wiping out ULFA and other terrorist organiszations from Bangladesh.

Second, when India is cooperating every other nation in defence field, so definitely it will like to take initiative in cooperations with a friend nation Bangladesh.

Long live Indo-Bangla defence cooperation.

Unfortunately Bangladesh doesn't really have an option. It can;t afford to be hostile towards India anymore. Its hope for connecting to China through Myanmar is also going to be dashed soon, with Myanmar moving away from China and cozying up with India and the US. Not to forget Bangladesh- Myanmar relationship itself is not the best.

I know a lot of Bangladeshis here would say we should invite China into the Bay of Bengal and what not. That will be nothing short of detrimental for Bangladesh, as any such move would irk India majorly and in turn would affect Bangladesh's position in the western world( destination for majority of Bangladesh's export).

China won't buy your goods, they might dump their own goods in your country though. Improving relationship with India should be the way to go, and defence pacts and regular exchanges between the two will help in doing just that.

India does not have the influence required to mess with bangladesh's trade with the west. If given a choice between india ajd china id select china both dump cheap goods in our country. Atleast chija does not interfere with our internal policy.

Every single defence cooperation can be possible with India other than major military procurements and some sensitive strategic issues, its an open secret of our military doctrine. And yes there should be enhanced cooperation within south asian countries or i am dreaming:frown:

Bangladesh should maintain Defence Cooperation With all South Asian Countries…….

I think we already have defence co operation for decades. But as a ally no one can trust India as it is not a trusted ally and a hegemonic force. Bangladesh should play a neutral role specially in the case of NE India. It is Indian problem and India should deal with it alone. Even if it leads to the break up of NE India it is none of our business. But definitely that outcome will be beneficial for Bangladesh.

You'd be surprised, look at whats happening with Sri Lanka in the UN these day. What do you think is the major reason behind that? India might not have its own influence, but the US does. They will do everything possible to keep China's growing influence in check. Any Chinese military presence in Bangladesh will upset the US and India will do everything possible to make sure that US takes notice of that.

Having said that, I myself don't want India to get involved in Bangladesh's internal matters. But with BNP led government supporting insurgent groups in the NE we were not really left with much options.

Let it reach to the security council, it will be vetoed by china. Sri Lanka is going through amazing growth right now, after the civil war. They have totally eradicated the tamil problem, along with it the India dadagiri. Now all she can is cry genocide and vote against sri lanka lol.

China Sri Lanka relations will be strong always :yahoo:

China - Sri Lanka's biggest donor in 2011

China has secured the status of a 'dedicated ally' of Sri Lanka providing US$1 billion assistance in 2011, overtaking Japan as the country's top donor, Finance Ministry sources said.

The US and UK have provided $7.4 million and 1.25 million sterling pounds, respectively.

Another delusional thought by an Indian. Whether Myanmar cozying with India and USA has nothing to do with connecting to China. I think already there are connecting route between China and Myanmar. Bangladesh just needs to connect to that route. Myanmar also knows that India is not a trusted ally. So Myanmar is not dumb enough to dump relationship with China to make relationship with a third world poor country India.

N regarding dumping goods of China to Bangladesh, it is not only Bangladesh but its happening all around the world. But good relationship with China means access to some modern tech and getting modern machinery and defense equipments at a cheap rate and getting diversified Chinese manufacturing business to Bangladesh.

If Bangladeshi product quality is good it will not be a matter... it will just makes its way to China, the way RMG products have done all around the world and will also do it in India despite all sort of trade barrier, even if India wants it or not and will force closure of Indian garments. Already hue and cry has been started in India. Initially only 1 million Indian will loss their jobs due to Bangladeshi export to India.

Now cheers and have fun.

You think India is dragging Sri Lanka to the UN? Its the US and other western powers, who don't like the idea of a major Chinese presence in the IOR . India is just tagging along to appease its own Tamil population.

Bangladesh is a whole different issue. There is no voting for Bangladesh in the UN where Chinese veto will help them. Its just a matter of bilateral trade. One directive is all that will be needed and all these importers of Bangladeshi RMG will dump you guys and move on to maybe Vietnam. That ll teach Bangladesh a lesson and will improve their image and relationship with Vietnam. Would China come and buy your products to fill the vacuum?
