BD To Seek $26 Billion From China for Power
EB Report

Bangladesh is about to seek $26 billion for 21 different projects of the country’s power sector from China during the upcoming visit of the Chinese president Xi Jinping.

Power division has formally submitted its requisition paper addressing that amount of funding to the Economic Relations Division (ERD).

Recently in an inter-ministry meeting chaired by ERD additional secretary Abul Monsur Mohammad Fayjulla, the Power division has proposed the name and funding needed for that 21 projects. Sources from ERD confirmed that the prime minister’s office will ultimately sort list the loan seeking projects. After that, the finalized list will be sent to the Exim Bank of China and then the Bank will decide where to give credit.

However, the authority has already asked for $23 billion for 20 different projects to the Exim Bank of China; and as of now, the Bank has not replied with any positivity on giving credit for any of the projects. Yet, ERD officials are hopeful to get some positive news before the Chinese President arrives the country.

The Power division is especially looking forward getting the largest credit valuing around $2 billion for the Matarbari 1,320MW power plant project. The deal is already finalized and only awaiting a final signing in presence of the state’s representatives of both the partner countries.

According to the new list of the Power division, it includes projects like, ‘System loss reduction by replacing five million electromechanical energy meter with electronic energy meter project’, which worth $166 million, ‘Expansion and strengthening of power system network under DPDC area project’ valuing $2.03 billion, ‘Power grid network strengthening project under PGCB’ valuing $1.32 billion, 360 MW Mymensing duel fuel combined cycle power plant having a seeking budget of BDT 33.79.

. . .
I don‘t think that China would be interested in investing so much money into a satellite state of India. You may as well ask your Modiji for it.

Why not, money is not free. China will get the money back on top of Chinse contractor will be making hell lot of money. Its all about business.

Good news, China has excellent tech, engineering capacity, as well as capital in power generation and transmission grid to offer Bangladesh which is fast becoming world export hub of RMG. The only concern is a China-unfriendly incumbent administration in Dhaka, wish politics doesn't obstruct economic development.

There is no China unfriendly govt in BD. You can say Pakistan unfriendly.

Bangladesh have better relation both with China and India.Relation with Chinese and Indian are not mutually exclusive.

Satellite state, vassal state are the propaganda word of Pakistani members here.Bangladesh is not bound by Pakistan in anyway to consider Pakistan's enemy or friend as it's own enemy or friend.Maintaining good relation with India is not vassalage.Bangladesh have own reason to be angry with Pakistan irrespective of India.India have no power over Bangladesh to dictate Bangladesh-China friendly relation.China also should not fall for the Pakistani narrative.China is and always will remain the most important and crucial ally of Bangladesh.

Yes, perhaps your description is more accurate. The current govt seems to have taken side in subcontinental geopolitics, which for better or worse does affect China's national interests. Hope that contemporary politics doesn't interfere with traditionally good people-to-people relationship between Bangladesh and China, let's prosper together.

@TopCat: You sound so optimistic. If it's so much money to be made why don't Europeans or Americans or your new ally India run into BD? Are they stupid?

Well it depends on what kind of investment you talking about. European and American dont usually invest in Asian infrastructure which you should be aware of in China? How many expressway American built in China?

Chinese are willing to invest which created interest in and within our government. There are quite a few Chinese companies and banks are lobbying days and night for winning contracts in Dhaka.

BD-China relationship does not have anything to do with China-PK relationship. PK is run by some unrealistic politicians these days. We cant compromise our national growth by getting into isolationist policies which PK is pursuing these days. The days for growth will not come back soon if we miss the train now. PK is going to miss it and will repent in coming days. China cant afford or will be willing to pay for Pakistani bill.

India thinks China's investment in Bangladesh is a threat
How do you look at this problem

Taking side in Indo-Pak dispute is a recent phenomenon on part of Bangladesh govt..Up until recently BD didn't commented on Indo-Pak dispute. Now BD govt. is taking side in this dispute because of Pakistani bad attitude regarding our liberation war in 1971.In that war Pakistani army committed a genocide in than Bangladesh, but they did neither apologize not acknowledged their wrong doing. Not only that, they showed the audacity to condemn the trial of local collaborator in Bangladesh by passing parliamentary resolution in Pakistan.Current govt. which lead the liberation war is not tolerating this.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_Bangladesh_genocide

1971 Pakistani war crime resonate in Bangladesh's psyche in the same way the as the Japanese war crime in China during the 2nd world war. Imagine,Japanese denying the the the genocide of 20 million Chinese or the Nanjing rape.Condemning the the trial of local collaborator who helped the japanese in killing, rape and destruction in China. Can anybody in China forgive Japan? This is the thing Pakistan is pursuing against Bangladesh. So BD don't have to be pro-India to have a bad relation with Pakistan.Pakistanis themselves are enough.
