The head of the BBC has refused demands from 120 MPs to drop the term Islamic State on the ground that its coverage of the terrorist group must be impartial.

Lord Hall of Birkenhead, the director- general, warned that an alternative name for the militants was “pejorative” and said that the broadcaster needed to “preserve the BBC’s impartiality”.

They're not completely impartial on ISIS though. They don't host ISIS members for head to head debates do they?

Strange argument: you don't have to debate with a criminal or a victim in order to report impartially on a crime or accident either, do you now?

If they dont use the word Islamic their viewership may drop. Their viewers want every terrorist to be associated to Islam.
So, you are blaming the Beeb for using words that the folks of ISIS have actually voluntarily adopted for themselves? How impartial is that?

If you don't know they refer to themselves as DAESH as well. But bbc would rather use Islamic state. Not too hard to figure.

ISIL considers the name Da'ish derogatory, because it sounds similar to the Arabic words Daes, "one who crushes something underfoot", and Dahes, "one who sows discord". ISIL also reportedly uses flogging as a punishment for those who use the name in ISIL-controlled areas.

What are you trying to say? They don't have to say all of that in arabic. Just daesh would be appropriate and hurt no sentiments.

I guess they just don't want their correspondents to be beheaded while covering the news from ground zero.

They are just playing safe.

They are just playing safe.

What is the issue of Muslims fashioning their govt after the Shariah? Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Russo, Hobbes, Locke, Marx, Engels and the whole lot of Western political scientists belong to the Western Christian Civilization (WCC). We Muslims have our own institutions, jurisprudence and systems that we had followed for a thousand years from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

According to Bush, "God told him to invade Iraq in his dream", and "the war on Iraq is a crusade". Yet I don't hear Western politicians calling Bush, Blair and tens of millions of their supporters Western-Zionist crusaders or terrorists. I don't hear many Western politicians calling Zionists "Zionists" either.

I agree with beeb.. once you start where do you stop? BBC takes their guidelines seriously.

One More Name for Islamic State: Daesh

It took the U.S. two months to settle on a moniker for its operations in Iraq and Syria, and Washington still doesn’t appear to have settled on a name for the enemy the military has been fighting there since August.
First it was ISIS or ISIL, then Islamic State, then some interchangeable combination of all three. And now a fourth name, Daesh, is gaining favor.
At the Pentagon last week, Lt. Gen. James Terry, the commander of the U.S. mission in Iraq and Syria, said regional partners requested the U.S. use the term Daesh, which sounds similar to the Arabic words Daes, “one who crushes something underfoot,” and Dahes, “one who sows discord.”
“Our partners, at least the ones that I work with, ask us to use that, because they feel that if you use ISIL, that you legitimize a self-declared caliphate,”
he said. “They feel pretty strongly that we should not be doing that.”
Secretary of State John Kerry also appears to prefer Daesh. At the NATO headquarters in Brussels earlier this month, he used the term in a speech 15 times. He used ISIL only twice.

I think there goes the propaganda argument.
