He is remind me of LKY...
He just lack of power, where as LKY hold absolute power.
I can't imagine how he will govern Indonesia if he hold absolute power..
Fortunately, he is gone now.. strong indonesia is bad for Singapore :dirol:

Lol LKY in his national day rallies said that a prosperous and progressive Indonesia is better for Singapore and the region than a weak and unstable Indonesia. Same goes for Malaysia. I will find you the video tomorrow if I can.

And I agree with him. Economics and prosperity isn't a zero sum game. Singapore will benefit from being a hub of a prosperous region rather than of a conflicted region. That is why we are investing in developing countries in the region as well as sharing our experiences and skills with them.

. .
Why???? Should indonesia be pluralistic?

They are the most populous muslim nation in the world, they have respected minorities and not degenerated their past.

Yet in their locality they have india killing muslims for eating meat, and electing clowns like Yogi, Burma persecuting muslim minorities

Why should indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei etc be pluralistic?

Cos Dharmic religions were pluraristic who believed that God can be reached in many ways which even allowed Islam to be propagated. Their religion was the only reason which allowed them to access Islam. Just cos they embraced Islam doesnt mean they should become insecure like the Middle east and countries on my west...

And how many Muslims are killed for that in India? Max 10 per year? or even less. I dont advocate killing nor even support it. They will be prosecuted.

I don't mean indonesia should be weak.
But not too strong and became dominant in region..
that's the best condition for Singapore

Indonesia have everything to be big country , they have natural resources except Brain :D

Imagine if they have good leader , batam would became a big headache for Singapore .. fortunately we were blessed with a bit stupid neighborhood so we can gain momentum to rise as developed country

Well competition for investments is inevitable, but opportunities will grow too as there will be a large prosperous market at your doorstep. If we are any good, we will ride on the opportunities and advance our economy amid rising competition. Humans thrive on competition.

Look at Switzerland. It's a landlocked country between Germany, France and Italy. Yet they are the most competitive country and have one of the highest quality of life in the world. Switzerland wouldn't be what she is today if she is situated in the middle of Africa, no matter how capable she is.

I believe ultimately a rising tide will raise all boats. Moreover with globalization Singapore is competing with countries as far as Europe for talent and capital, not just in the immediate region. A growing and dynamic Asia-Pacific region is one of Singapore's strength in this century compared to a stagnant Europe.

The world is our oyster, but it would be better if the oyster is closer to us than to our competitors.

What you said is true if your neighbors don't wish ill for you, which is not the case in Singapore. You forgot Konfrontasi (1963-1966) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesia–Malaysia_confrontation.

Its very difficult to prosper if you have powerful neighbors who instead of competing and prospering together, employ all means, even to the detriment of their country, to undermine your country. Singapore's early economic success is largely due to economic talents like Goh Keng Swee and Hon Sui Sen. I personally feel Goh Keng Swee made a mess of the Armed Forces. But then they shouldn't have put an economic genius with no military experience to setup the Army.

Ah Hok downplayed this verse that use to attack him.

Surah Al-Maidah verse 51

O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.

If Ah Hok is guilty of being Christian, Indonesia needs to purge all Christians there.

This speech hurt many moslem in Indonesia especially the hardliners, because Ahok who is non moslem mentioned Quran's verse with his indirect interpretation in front of group of people; then the hardliners indict him a "blasphemy on Quran" and cannot forgive him.

The interpretation on Al-Maida 51 itself is controversial, because some ulama agree and some disagree; and the blasphemy accusation itself is very controversial due to subjective interpretation on ahok's words disregard his own subsequently clarified intention on the speech.

Which is why I add in the word 'progressive' for Indonesia, believing in cooperation than contention. Both of us would do much better.

I absolutely agree with you.
Indonesia and Malaysia should follow Pakistan example as a Muslim country!
They should adopt Islam law, and sharia!
But no worries!
Indonesia will soon apply sharia law in the next 5-10 years
In the end, Muslim country , Muslim law
Sorry, thats not going to happen, Indonesia Will never in Sharia laws, Indonesia is a pluralistic nation, in the past there are movementnya to replace Indonesia pluralistic idealogy but fails, and those clown like FPI, FUI, HTI Will be purge like the comunist if they dare to replace PANCASILA by force, btw i am a moslem my self, and i dont want to see Indonesia fell like some midle eastern country, especially Pakistan, sorry

Hari raya Nyepi, Indonesia - 28 March 2017

What is Nyepi Day?

Nyepi is a Hindunese "Day of Silence" that is commemorated every Isakawarsa (Saka new year) according to the Balinese calendar (in 2017, it falls on March 28). It is a Hindu celebration mainly celebrated in Bali. Nyepi, a public holiday in Indonesia, is a day of silence, fasting and meditation for the Balinese. The day following Nyepi is also celebrated as New Year's Day.

Hinduism in Indonesia

Hinduism is the third-largest religion in Indonesia. Currently, around 3.3 percent of the Indonesian population adheres to Hinduism, which in absolute terms constitutes approximately 8.5 million individuals out a total of almost 260 million Indonesians.

Locations in Indonesia where relatively large Hindu communities reside are:

2. Sulawesi (Central, South and Southeast)
3. Central Kalimantan
4. South Sumatra (Lampung)

Aside from Budha and Hindu, Indonesia guarantees freedom of religion and recognizes other religions as mentioned in the graphic below :

Indonesia_Religion_Percentage.png

*lainnya = others

Sunni Islam is the majority religion throughout most of the country. Notable exceptions include the province of Bali, which is predominantly Hindu, and the provinces of Papua, West Papua, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, West Timor, West Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, North Sulawesi and North Sumatra which are predominantly Christian.

About 86 percent of all Indonesians are Muslims; 7 percent are Christians (4.1 percent Protestant and 2.9 percent Roman Catholic); 3.3 percent are Hindu; 1.2 percent are Buddhists, Confucian and other; and 0.4 percent are unspecified.

This is how extreme Islam is in Indonesia:

main-qimg-9336d4d3f8985aa2071ef4da1c4dbf69

According to this source, Indonesia as a nation that is far less developed than Turkey/Lebanon, actually have large number of people who are against Sharia or any sort of extremism. Imagine this in another 20 years, it will almost certainly became even more liberal. It is safe to say that vast majority of the middle-upper class are fairly open-minded, albeit occasional racism (which tend to be a joke).

I lived in Indonesia for quite some time and there was hardly any extremism of any kind I observed anywhere. For the most part, most forms of Islam and the great majority of Muslims are not even remotely extreme. Many of them regard extremism as an embarrassment to their faith, their nation, and them personally. Indonesia is a secular plural democracy which has already had a woman president. One can easily find alcohol, pork, and p0rn there, along with many Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, animists, and even a small Jewish community.

Intermarriage, dating, and friendships across religious lines are extremely common. I never experienced any prejudice or hostility towards me as a Catholic. Just the opposite, there was quite a bit of friendliness and curiosity. Muslim women sometimes approached me for dating. A group of Muslims even invited me to break fast for Ramadan, and offered me snacks while they fasted.

Regarding to Ahok's case, it is not just a normal blasphemy case there's too much politics in this case. Ahok's sentence is politically driven by corrupted elites.

Ahok also would probably be free next week on bail anyway until the High Court trial proceedings so the 2 year verdict of the National Court does not quite matter.

Actually though it matters quite little as it could be easily overturned on the High Court or at the Supreme Court, or even the Supreme Court retrial if the fight goes on till then. Although it did successfully rally the pro-Ahok supporters and moderate muslims organizations to finally stand up and gave the government the support to do a “counterattack” (so to speak) with the banning of HTI (one of the biggest group on the anti-Ahok demonstration with apparently over 100,000 members).

External support notably from the APHR,EU and UN has also poured so there’s still a big ray of hope that this is not the end.

Basuki's case is a politic one in the core of it. Everyone who follows Indonesian politic know that. He is targeted mainly because he is a close ally of President Jokowi and he sits as Jakarta governor which to many high elites in the country a very strategic position.

Basuki was chosen by his party Gerindra to pair with Jokowi in 2012 Jakarta govenor election as vice governor, but then he moved against his party during 2014 presidential campaign which pitted Jokowi vs Prabowo. Instead of supporting his party chairman - Prabowo, Basuki openly declare his support for Jokowi and left his party. Basuki left his fellow Gerindrans in bitter disappointment. He is accused as "traitor" by Gerindra and it's allies. Ever since they tried each and every way to bring him down. Finally, he made one mistake commenting on Koran, thus creating a door for his political enemies to attack him.

There were 100s election held simultaneously across Indonesia this year, several of them have non-muslim candidates compete against muslim candidates but only Jakarta have this problem. The same (Islamic) parties who reject Basuki on a base of his religion are found supporting non muslim candidate elsewhere, even rejecting muslim ones.

This is NOT a case of Muslim vs Christian, Muslim vs Chinese etc..

There are many muslims in Basuki's camp (his foster family is muslim and most of his supporter are in fact muslims), and on the other side, there are Chinese Christians who want to incarcerate Basuki. Among Chinese who are Basuki's "enemy" is Hary Tanoe, he owns several media in Indonesia. Months during campaign, his media relentlessly attacking Basuki while aggressively promote Basuki's rival. Other is Lieus S., chief of a Chinese Community, who at a live debate on TV about Basuki, almost had a fight with Anton Medan, a Chinese muslim supporting Basuki.

Again, this is NOT a case of Muslim vs Christian, Muslim vs Chinese etc, this is all politic.
