Basha dam to be inaugurated next month

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Friday informed the lower house of Parliament that the construction work on Diamer Basha dam would be inaugurated by the Prime Minister next month adding that land acquisition process has been initiated.

In response to various questions raised by parliamentarians in question hour, he said the government was vigorously pursuing the harnessing of water resources to improve the water availability in the country.

He said the designs and tender documents of Diamer Basha dam have been completed and Asian Development Bank (ADB) has promised to finance the project.

The minister said that a comprehensive plan to construct a number of small dams in the country had also been launched to provide irrigation facilities to areas outside the command if Indus system.

He said Rs.1.249 billion had been incurred on the planning and investigation of Kalabagh dam so far, adding that instead of initiating work on controversial projects and wasting huge money the government is working on non controversial projects.

In response to another question, the minister said the power shortfall in July, August and September 2010 was recorded as 3257 MW, 3409 MW and 3297 MW respectively.

Ashraf said the main cause of loadshedding is devastation caused by floods adding that in many areas the flood water washed away the grid stations, transmission lines and transformers. However, he said efforts are underway to improve the situation.

He further said that there is huge gap between installed capacity and power generation.
He said Pakistan raised objections on the design features and spillway structure of Kishenganga hydroelectric plant.

But India did not cooperate in resolving the issue bilaterally, therefore the government has instituted the proceedings for resolving the dispute by court of arbitration as provided under the Indus Water Treaty, he added.

To another question he said the project to distribute two energy savers to every household in exchange of incandescent bulbs is under submission for approval of the government.

He said a consultant has been hired to formulate the proposal and mechanism for launching of the project, adding that the cost of the project is $ 85 million.

Good news but we should built Kalabagh Dam first as its a dam of stretegic importance for Pakistan

LAHORE- After international competitive bidding, construction work on Diamer-Basha Dam Project will start in October this year. The project, on its completion, will store 6.4 million acres feet (MAF) of water for agriculture besides generating 4500 MW of low-cost hydel electricity.
WAPDA Chairman Shakil Durrani stated this while addressing a delegation of the Armed Forces War Course, National Defence University, lslamabad, at WAPDA House on Saturday. The Chief Instructor Major General Tahir Habib headed the visiting delegation.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman said that WAPDA is focused on the optimal utilization of water and hydropower resources in the country. To a question, he responded that the international financial institutions have shown keen interest in financing the various WAPDA projects because of their high economic internal rate of returns (EIRR).
Earlier, WAPDA Member (Water) Syed Raghib Abbas Shah, briefing the delegation on water sector, said that WAPDA is constructing 15 mega projects in water and hydropower sectors. Mangla Dam Raising Project has been substantially completed, while Satpara Dam in Skardu and Gomal 7am Dam in South Waziristan Agency are expected to be completed in July and October this year respectively. The delegation was further briefed that Jinnah Hydropower and three Khwar projects with accumulative generation capacity of 419 MW would start contributing to the National Grid from this year onwards.
The delegation was informed that in addition to executing mega projects in water and hydropower sectors, WAPDA has been tasked to build 32 small and medium dams in all the four provinces and FATA. Of them, 12 dams will be constructed in the first phase of three years to provide gross storage capacity of about 2.5 MAF for irrigating more than 6,35,500 acres of land through high efficiency micro irrigation system.
PEPCO Managing Director Eng. Tahir Basharat Cheema, during his briefing on power sector, told the delegation that various reforms have been introduced in the power sector of the country to make it more efficient and customer-friendly. He said that the Government is taking a number of short, medium and long-term measures to bridge the gap between demand and supply of the electricity. Dilating upon the supply and demand side measures, he informed that more than 8,000 MW electricity would be added to the National Grid by Dec 2012. WAPDA Member (Power) Fazal Ahmad Khan, Member (Finance) Chaudhary Abdul Qadeer, MD (Administration) Naveed Akram Cheema, Secretary WAPDA lmtiaz Tajwar and other officers concerned were also present on the occasion.

Well the dam is not finished.Construction will be started next month. Diamer and Basha are the names of the places where dam is being built.

This project has few advantages over Kalabagh

As it is upstream from Tarbela it will take most of the silt and increase the life of tarbela by about 35 years(presently Tarbela is expected to serve till 2060 as far as i know).

It will increase the average hydro electric production at Tarbela and Ghazi Barotha due to better availability of water.

Only around 30,000 people will have to relocated

But it is also a very difficult dam to construct.Terrain of the area makes it very difficult to transport equipment.

100 km of KKH will be submerged in the lake of the dam hence before completion of project around 140 km of KKH will have to reconstructed at a higher level.Number of sections of KKH will have to be upgraded for transportation of heavy equipment.

So it will be a difficult task to complete this project even in 10 years.

Realy challenging situation
but once its start working
it will be greatly benifical for pak
.
it will be able to produce 5000MW electricity
