A final appeal by the leader of Bangladesh's largest Islamist party against a death penalty for involvement in a 1971 liberation war has been rejected, his lawyers said, clearing the way for his hanging.

The Supreme Court on Thursday passed the order against Motiur Rahman Nizami, head of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami party, which opposed the war for independence from Pakistan.

The 73-year-old, who was also given life sentences for four other war crimes convictions, has exhausted all legal options and only a presidential pardon could now save him.

Jamaat called a 24-nationwide strike for Sunday in a response published on its website.

The Supreme Court in January upheld the death penalty for Nizami on convictions of genocide, rape and orchestrating the massacre of top intellectuals during the war.

WATCH: Is Bangladesh moving towards a one-party state?

The Jamaat leader, in jail since 2010, was originally handed the death sentence by a war crimes tribunal in 2014.

Bangladeshi authorities say about three million people were killed and more than 200,000 women raped during the conflict. The former East Pakistan broke away to become Bangladesh after the war.

The tribunal has sparked violence and drawn fierce criticism from opposition politicians, including Jamaat-e-Islami, who say it is victimising Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's opponents.

Inside Story: What's behind Bangladesh's war crimes trials?
No Peace Without Justice, a rights group based in Italy, has called the tribunal "a weapon of politically influenced revenge whose real aim is to target the political opposition".

The government denies that.

A senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader living outside of Bangladesh told Al Jazeera in a reaction that the news of the verdict was "devastating".

"This is the not the first death sentence confirmed by the judicial system and quite a distinguished line of others are waiting after him," said the party official, who wished to remain anonymous.

"Not only that; at least 20,000 Jamaat workers are in prison without any charges.

"Police have raided and arrested many people attending religious or Quran classes. Even the international community rejects the allegations and also the court process."

'Politicised process'
International legal experts expressed concern over the lack of an appropriate accountability mechanism in Bangladesh and called on the United Nations to support an internationally supervised mechanism.

A joint statement, signed by six legal experts, said: "It is with deep regret that the current practice of the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal (BICT) is failing to uphold the highest international standards required in such cases, in particular where there is the imposition of the death penalty."

The experts, affiliated with a wide range of institutions, from the International Criminal Court to the US State Department, said that the central issue is that "any judicial mechanism, post conflict or otherwise, is about the pursuit of justice and accountability, it is not about revenge or political retribution".

"Sadly, the BICT has shown itself to be merely that, a politicised process that fails to uphold the very standards it was set up to address," the statement read.

The verdict came as the nation has seen a surge of violence in which atheist bloggers, academics, religious minorities and foreign aid workers have been killed.

In the last month alone, five people, including a university teacher, two gay activists and a Hindu, have been hacked to death by suspected armed groups.

The government has blamed that violence on Jamaat and other opposition groups. Jamaat denies any involvement.

Four opposition politicians, including three Jamaat leaders, have been executed since late 2013 after tribunal convictions.

It's funny that alleged Jamat leaders committed so much autrocity including rape per Awami Maloon leauge during 71 yet didn't even kill a fly after 71 till now instead what we have witness is that all sorts of sub humane characteristic presence within Awami Maloon League leaders and its supporters.

We will test you with a certain amount of fear and hunger and loss of wealth and life and fruits of your toil. But give good news to the steadfast: Those who, when disaster strikes them, say, “We belong to Allah and to Him we will return”. Those are the people who will have blessings and mercy from their Lord; they are the ones who are guided.

President Erdoğan said

DEATH PENALTY FOR JAMAAT-E-ISLAMI PARTY LEADER NIZAMI

Touching upon the decision of Bangladesh’s Supreme Court to uphold the death sentence issued for Rahman Motiur Nizami, head of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, President Erdoğan said: “I condemn the mentality that sentences a mujahid to death, who has neared the age of 70 and who we believe has no earthly sin. I consider such proliferation of hatred there and the understanding that orders such death sentences despite our repetitive initiatives neither as a fair governance nor as a democratic mentality.”

A mass killer ofcourse deserves death. But sadly in non-brutal way.

And, no one can stop it. Just some hatred fruitless posts will be produced in online forums, or social network groups.

And, We will be extremely happy When, Pakistani Generals (Responsible for 1971 masscres) trial will be started.

Fingers Crossed.

. . .
is it not too late to have a fair trial?

Yes it is too late. And almost all the judicial process failed to establish a clear link between these Jamat leaders and alleged warcrimes.

I will give you one example. A witness of a particular incident wrote books on the incident and named all the killers in the book. But the book didn't have the accused Jamati's name. Then when he became witness in the court he named the Jamati as the main perpetrator. When he was asked by the defence about the book he simply answered that he was afraid of him so he intentionally skipped his name.

The court accepted the answer. But Is it enough to hang a 80 year old just by the words?

Journalist David Bergman listed such irregularities in his Bangladesh politico blog. Google to know more. He is now considered a Jamat agent lol.

I am against this tribunal not because I love Jamatis. But because this court damaged the legacy of 1971 more than anything else.

We lost the moral high ground. Today Newspapers Intellectualls Tv channels are under firm Government control. They all speak against Jamat. But with the change of Government the media will take a 180 degree U turn and will prove that the trials were not fair. Everyone will turn into David Bergman.

and These rajakars will turn into "SHAHEED".

I have same fear.... its very difficult to prove now, and the trial lacks credibility.... I think BD should have pursued international court like they did for nazis or bosnians... although not death penalty, they would at least have ensured a fair trial, and possibly jail term.

We hope to complete that before their natural death.

We wont do that. Cleaning internal threats are enough. Having clear knowledge about external elements and their dids in the past and that is all. We want to have forward looking forgiving approach in future and friendship to all. But internal threats were pulling us down in the past, after clearing them it will help to look in the country affairs more.
