DHAKA, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh saw exports soar more than 34 percent to 52.08 billion U.S. dollars in the 2021-22 fiscal year (July 2021-June 2022), official data showed on Sunday.

According to data released by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) under the Ministry of Commerce, Bangladesh achieved the highest export earnings in the 2021-22 fiscal year with the final months recording robust income growths.

"In the 2021-22 fiscal year, exports reached 52,082.66 million U.S. dollars, setting a new record," said the EPB.

With 4.91 billion U.S. dollars in export earnings in June, up 37.19 percent over the same period a year ago, the country's overall export earnings in the last fiscal year exceeded the target of 43.50 billion U.S. dollars.

Bangladesh's export income in the 2020-21 fiscal year (July 2020-June 2021) was recorded at 38.76 billion U.S. dollars.

As always the growth in the 2021-22 fiscal year was largely attributed to the demand for ready-made garments.

Bangladesh's earnings from garment export, which make up more than three fourths of the country's annual incomes since the beginning of this decade, surged to 42.61 billion U.S. dollars in the 2021-22 fiscal year, according to the EPB.

Knitwear garment export grew 36.88 percent year on year to 23.21 billion U.S. dollars while woven garment export rose 33.82 percent to 19.40 billion U.S. dollars.

During the cited period, many other traditional export items, like frozen foods, home textiles, leather and leather products and footwear, also performed well, showed the EPB data."

I don't get the point the affinity folks have for better spoken and reading English. Very few of the east Asian nations were or are good in English. We need better management and technical schools with some great teachers. Great English or Research level education quality are nice to have, but not needed to fill the most pressing skilled employee needs.

It’s a massive handicap even for first generation Bengali immigrants in the west.

Thankfully, British Bangladeshi kids are now on par with middle class whites. But if their parents spoke English - they would be even higher.

You cannot compare east Asia with Bangladesh.

East Asia (China, Japan and Korea) was already industrialised whereas Bangladesh only started in the 1980s.

And Bengal suffered two famines under British rule and was systematically deindustrialised.

We cannot progress without speaking the Queen’s English.

BD higher education is behind both India and Sri Lanka as it started from so far behind compared to both those countries.

It will get better without any action but the number of students does need to be limited to only the top 10% at most and quality improved of the teaching and research - should be a focus of BD education this decade and next alongside relevant technical education in engineering and IT.

We need one world class school in every district - staffed by English speakers.

And 10+ world class universities - also staffed by English speakers.

Bangla is no handicap and English is not a necessity for development. East Asian countries developed without being good in English. Our failure to realize our lack of planning to advance the country in scientific, technological and industrial fields have led to the slow development of the country and then propose English as a remedy to fix it. It is better to know at best but certainly not a pre-requisite. Our subcontinental people are still mental slaves of the British.
