When you combine services then BD has hit 60 billion US dollars of exports this fiscal.

"
DHAKA, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh saw exports soar more than 34 percent to 52.08 billion U.S. dollars in the 2021-22 fiscal year (July 2021-June 2022), official data showed on Sunday.

According to data released by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) under the Ministry of Commerce, Bangladesh achieved the highest export earnings in the 2021-22 fiscal year with the final months recording robust income growths.

"In the 2021-22 fiscal year, exports reached 52,082.66 million U.S. dollars, setting a new record," said the EPB.

With 4.91 billion U.S. dollars in export earnings in June, up 37.19 percent over the same period a year ago, the country's overall export earnings in the last fiscal year exceeded the target of 43.50 billion U.S. dollars.

Bangladesh's export income in the 2020-21 fiscal year (July 2020-June 2021) was recorded at 38.76 billion U.S. dollars.

As always the growth in the 2021-22 fiscal year was largely attributed to the demand for ready-made garments.

Bangladesh's earnings from garment export, which make up more than three fourths of the country's annual incomes since the beginning of this decade, surged to 42.61 billion U.S. dollars in the 2021-22 fiscal year, according to the EPB.

Knitwear garment export grew 36.88 percent year on year to 23.21 billion U.S. dollars while woven garment export rose 33.82 percent to 19.40 billion U.S. dollars.

During the cited period, many other traditional export items, like frozen foods, home textiles, leather and leather products and footwear, also performed well, showed the EPB data."

However, unofficial figures collected from the central bank show import expenditures of 11 months (July-May) of the just-ended fiscal year would reach $81.49 billion, exceeding exports by $34.32 billion.

Wow!

Absolutely fantastic numbers.

Value add in garments is huge now days.

Also it’s very labour intensive so creating loads of jobs.

Unlike India, our growth is jobs based growth.

And not requiring subsidies - meaning we don’t need high taxes to fund inefficient industries.

Our growth model is making real difference to peoples lives.

Hence we weathered Covid really well whilst millions of Hindus died in India.

There is 100s of billions of dollars of lost Chinese exports and domestic demand that will open up annually in garments as China becomes a developed country by 2030 and hence will be totally uncompetitive in garment production by then.

Best days of garment exports for BD are yet to come and 100 billion US dollars exports by 2030 in the sector should be the absolute minimum target to aim for.

Garments is our new “golden fibre”.

Even Muslin.

We have always done great work with fabrics.

It will rapidly lift us into middle income.

And provide the foundation for upper income.

But we need to build those English Medium schools in every district in the next five years.

It’s our destiny to rule everything east of Delhi, again.

We did it before and we will again!

This is why Sanghis are so scared!

I don't get the point the affinity folks have for better spoken and reading English. Very few of the east Asian nations were or are good in English. We need better management and technical schools with some great teachers. Great English or Research level education quality are nice to have, but not needed to fill the most pressing skilled employee needs.

Bro, Bangla is a massive handicap.

You learn by reading and listening.

What journals, books and online lessons are in Bangla?

It’s a massive handicap even for first generation Bengali immigrants in the west.

Thankfully, British Bangladeshi kids are now on par with middle class whites. But if their parents spoke English - they would be even higher.

You cannot compare east Asia with Bangladesh.

East Asia (China, Japan and Korea) was already industrialised whereas Bangladesh only started in the 1980s.

And Bengal suffered two famines under British rule and was systematically deindustrialised.

We cannot progress without speaking the Queen’s English.

English will become less relevant as China becomes a co-superpower alongside the US.

BD should be teaching both English and Mandarin as 2nd languages in schools to cover both bases.

Just cannot see English being ever supplanted.

The internet is in English.

Key journals and research is in English.

Critical mass of literature is and continue to be in English.

English speaking world is just too big and diverse.

China is a controlled society - hence will never open up - required for cultural and linguistic influence.

China will be rapidly ageing by 2030. And will fade like Japan.

A 1 billion population developed country in 2050 will have major world influence just by sheer world trade volume and technological advancement.

English will still be No. 1 but Mandarin will be a not too distant 2nd.

What I hear from business owners there are serious lack in Project Management and General Manager skills among local candidates. The resorts are hiring Indian and Sri Lankan managers. These resorts are catering to domestic customers would rather hire domestic folks but can't find any.

Most of the technical university graduates besides the decent public and private ones are not employable.

BD higher education is behind both India and Sri Lanka as it started from so far behind compared to both those countries.

It will get better without any action but the number of students does need to be limited to only the top 10% at most and quality improved of the teaching and research - should be a focus of BD education this decade and next alongside relevant technical education in engineering and IT.

Bro, I am not surprised going by the piss poor quality of the teaching staff.

We need one world class school in every district - staffed by English speakers.

And 10+ world class universities - also staffed by English speakers.

BD teaching staff and academics are piss poor by world standards.

Lots of hot air and pontificating and politicking!

Bangladesh could become a middle income country just with the export of garment products. People are underestimating the value of the textile industry.

Bangla is no handicap and English is not a necessity for development. East Asian countries developed without being good in English. Our failure to realize our lack of planning to advance the country in scientific, technological and industrial fields have led to the slow development of the country and then propose English as a remedy to fix it. It is better to know at best but certainly not a pre-requisite. Our subcontinental people are still mental slaves of the British.
