Bangladeshi billionaires: Where art thou?

Cannot wait to see a free trade-area of 400 million people of W. Bengal, NE States, Nepal, Bhutan and BD of 400 million people of goods, services and energy. This has the potential to revolutionise the lives of everyone in the region over the next 1-2 decades.
West Bengal is 93 million, where did you get the 400 million figure from, that would be 1/3rd of India crammed in there

typo ? :P

neck deep in literal sewage, Raqibool.
lmao

I meant all those areas - you misread it.

This free-trade area will be centred on the BD economy that will be larger than all the others combined.

Already India is building a hydro-electric dam in Nepal where 500MW will be taken by BD from the 900MW Upper Karnali Hydropower Project to be developed by the GMR Group. India will take most of the rest and Nepal the remaining amount.

BD has also offered to export electrity to Nepal in the winter season where power from hydroelectric dams gets lowered.

Forget the nonsense here as it does not affect reality of BD-India close economic co-operation that will also pull Nepal and Bhutan up as well.

Ah ok, fair.. I did misread because you repeated the 400 million figure twice, cool.

I'm all for a lightly regulated and fair fta that will be beneficial for all 3.

.
Sure...

We, the majority people in Bangladesh, live in rural areas and cannot construct RCC & brick based strong, comfortable and decent houses. We opt for building our houses with wood, bamboo and corrugated iron (CI) sheets, as those materials for constructing houses are less costly and more or less durable. But recently we have been observing with concern that prices of all these materials of house building have gone sky high. For example, a mature full-length bamboo that is suitable for house building costs Tk 180.00 per piece, which cost Tk 100.00 a few years back. In the retail market one cannot think of purchasing one cft garjan wood for less than Tk 1, 500.00, which was Tk 1,000.00 last year. The prices of CI sheets have gone too high. The retail price of a bundle of CI sheet of standard thickness to make roof is Tk.7, 500.00, whereas it was around Tk.2,800.00 three years back

Stop this nonsense. This article is from 2008.

The article (actually a letter to the editor) states why most Bangladeshis build houses out of bamboo & CI sheets.

And even in 2016, most of your houses were built that way.

So what's non sensical about it? Only thing non sensical is your claims of CI sheets amounting to several tons being used. :D

Thanks for pointing that out. It has been corrected.

Expect Bhutan with a population of less than 1 million to become the new "Saudi Arabia" of hydroelectric power exports to BD. It can get pretty wealthy just by selling electricity to BD.

At the end of the day both BD and India are likely to grow their per capita incomes in the 5-7% range for decades to come.

The time when neither are no longer 3rd world countries is not very far - maybe just 10-15 years away now.

Those are not a lakeside bungalows but normal homes in Kerala's villages. It's a mostly middle class state & it would be unfair to compare Kerala with BD. See the below point.
Yeah, and this house don't exist in Kerala. Only those houses on the lakeside exist.

Yeah, and this house also look likes those two house on the lake side.

Nice try with the stock image, but again I warn you, let's not go into statistics here.

You would be seen squealing even more pathetically when I start comparing the best of India with the LDC.

Or you can call it quits, now. :D

What’s the point of all these useless argument? It’s well known that people in Bangladesh specially the rich one doesn’t pay taxes and that’s why on paper no billionaire exists. But in reality there are number of billionaires in Bangladesh.

Just for example different international agencies have pointed out that every year 7.5-8 billion usd is taken out of the country. That itself indicates a segment of people how much money that they have accumulated.

This is an unofficial list of billionaires based on estimation only in Bangladesh.

For example Chairman of Summit group Muhammad Aziz Khan has been reported as one of the top 50 richest person in Singapore with net worth of 990 million USD.

You can easily imagine his actual wealth will be way higher as the above amount is based on property and income value based in Singapore only. However how he got that much money in Singapore nobody knows and usually speculated that it’s done through money laundering from Bangladesh.

Salman F Rahman has also comes into the worlds billionaire list though he tried to deny it.

As far as India is concerned we have moved past India and it’s a done story. No need to do any comparison with that poor country where per capita gdp is lower than Bangladesh that will be reflected after July 1 when Bangladesh will release its new data for 2022 based on 2015 base year.

This poor country India didn’t take LDC status just for feeling good reason and to portray itself as an imaginary suppa pawa! Where a big chunk live below poverty line and it’s minister ask it’s citizen to eat rats. But India was eligible to retain the LDC status earlier as it is still a least developed country.

. . .
May be this is the reason why India export so much rice and wheat in world market despite having only 300 million ton grain production for a country of 1.4 billion people. China produce 600 million ton grain for similar number of people yet need to import from other countries. Even Bangladesh produce 45 million ton grain, per capita much more than India, still need to import 6-7 million ton per year mostly wheat. It is a puzzle, how on earth India became the largest rice exporter and one of the biggest wheat exporter after feeding 1.4 billion people with meagre 300 million ton grain harvest? India is known as one of the hungriest nation in the world, boast about 166 billionaire.

Nilgiri will not like it when you point out their mysterious food consumption numbers.

But ties in with what we saw during covid.

As if the GDP statistics given by your statistical bureau is worth the paper it's printed on.

According to IMF WEO April 2022.

GDP per capita (nominal USD)

India $2515
Bangladesh $2362

Cope harder.

That’s what the illiterate does when they don’t read full paragraph. Bangladesh updates it’s data on July every year. That’s why mentioned that explicitly. With 2015 base year this time per capita gdp will be around 2800 usd.
