Bangladesh wants enhanced rail link with India

Bangladesh wants enhanced rail link with India - The Economic Times

NEW DELHI: Bangladesh has sought enhanced transport links with India, particularly rail connectivity.

During a meeting with External Affairs Minister S M Krishna here on Thursday, Bangladesh Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs A. H. Mahmood Ali, MP, sought reestablishment of rail connectivity at Chilahati-Haldibari and Kulaura-Mahishashon between the two neighbours.

Ali, who is heading the Bangladesh delegation to LDC conference here, also wanted early operationalization of Rohanpur-Singhabad rail link and dual gauge conversion of Parbatipur-Birol rail section.

The two leaders also discussed connectivity to Nepal and Bhutan through India as well as use of Chittagong port as a regional hub of connectivity, a statement issued by Bangladesh High Commission said on Friday.

It said India has assured early conclusion of water-sharing deals on Teesta and Feni rivers with Bangladesh.

He highlighted that passenger coach factory in Saidpur in Bangladesh could be modernized with Indian support under the US$1 billion credit line extended by India during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to India in January last year.

Ali and Krishna also discussed bilateral issues like barrier-free trade, stopping of civilian killings at the border and unfettered access to Tin Bigha enclave.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India , Tariq Ahmad Karim, Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the UN in New York Dr. A. K. Abdul Momen, and Director General (Economic Affairs), Ministry of Foreign Affairs accompanied Mahmood Ali during the meeting with Krishna.

When even hardly any bangladeshi news paper published such news with such title ... why this bharti newspaper are publishing this type of misleading information to give the impression that it is bd who is seeking this rail line link not India but every one knows it is meant to provide free transit to India... All contracts related transit to India should be stopped by any means if it is free and without any benefit for bangladesh... Bd government should scarp the deal free transit to nepal and bhutal in return giving bhartis the same... It should be based on duty on both side as bharatis will transport couple of times more product to NE India... then bd's transportation to nepal and bhtan... N AL government should stop these bharti appeasement deals and bowing to this bhartis ... I hope they have got their message in the mayor election what the people of bangladesh want and why they did not vote for them.

Nothing published in this regard from the Bangladesh media counterpart.

It is the India who awaited for the transit since 1971. It was we, who ignored the indian proposal for many years definitely cant request a rail link to india. lol.

Few days back there was news that ADB is pressing Bangladesh to enhance rail way connectivity with neighboring country instead of saying the name India... now this bhart news paper twisted the news and said bangladesh want enhanced rail link with India... but even if it is it should not be part of free transit with India... with free transit there is nothing for bd to gain...

That may have been the case but it's your country who's asking for it now (for whatever reason). BTW if you oppose it, go out there and protest. I'm sure sami6108 would be all too happy to join you.

read my post again... no bangladeshi is against anything... but if it is part of "free transit" no bangladeshi will support it as it will bring no benefit to bangladesh... the scheme which was made by india to get free transit in return for giving free transit to nepal and bhutan is nothing but a hypocrisy... n nothing less then a hegemonic agenda ... n this must be by any means if it is still so to provide free transit to India...

You don't want it let your govt cancel it..but don't speak for every Bangladeshi..coz you are no position to do that.
IF not, gather your friends..go back home and start demonstration against this deal Egypt style.

Why don't you read my post again. That's what I said, if you're against free transit then why don't you protest against it and you're telling me that "no bangladeshi will support it".

I am a patriotic bangladeshi... no need to go to bangladesh for demonstration... raising awareness in the internet is much more affective then doing protest on the street... N this is the view of the majority of bangladeshi... AL government was just doing this to please the bharatis and due to USA pressure... but after loosing the mayor election all across bangladesh they have changed their stance ... n right now they are reconsidering it based on cost benefit analysis that is what said by personal adviser to PM hasina mashiur rahman...

But what ever the matter free transit should be stopped... as this is only intend to provide benefit to the bhartis instead of getting any benefit for bd...n people of bd already spoke in the mayor election what they want...

We will let down the India-Bangladesh Win-Loss deal of transit, when BNP will come to power on next election (Bangladeshi ppl will forever swap their vote between bnp to al, al to bnp in every term). Any Win-Win deal is always welcome.

I am not a politicians or political activist of any party that I will have to protest... already different parties and think thank opposed the present format of the transit... which will not bring any benefit to bangladesh other then loosing business to NE India, traffic congestion, environmental pollution, increasing smuggling... etc. Without any financial benefit the whole contract should be scrapped ... What BNP said might be a good alternative... charging bhartis duty for their product but must be little less than the amount that they will save from transit through Bangladesh... in transpiration cost... above it bhartis will be able to save a significant amount of time... in some cases within hour they will be able to transport to ne india or within 2 hour from chittagong port where as sometime it takes 7 days through traansit from the chicken neck

Wonder why Egyptians never thought of it ..there could lot less blood shed..had they been able think of overthrow Mubrak from over the internet..they could spammed the online forums with same rhetoric day after day and bam Mubarak would have stepped down out guilt.

Besides how do you know majority of Bagladeshis supports your theory? ..have you conducted a plebiscite on this??
It is simple..If Bangladesh wants to cancel the deal..by all means but let actual Representatives of Bangladesh(ie GOB) speak for themsleves.

Too bad, how long have you been "protesting" on this forum? The Egyptians got what they wanted in less than 2 weeks with good old fashioned street protests. Don't give me that lame excuse, you just like to flame on the internet, while hidden behind the blanket of anonymity.
