Bangladesh is to receive the last of five UK-surplus Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules transport aircraft in the coming weeks, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) told Jane’s on 7 January.

All of the ‘short-bodied’ C-130Js (designated C5 in Royal Air Force [RAF] service) were originally due to be with the Bangladesh Air Force by the end of 2019, but with four aircraft now in-country the MoD said the final one is now expected to be handed over in March.

As previously reported by Jane’s , Bangladesh ordered the surplus C-130Js in two batches of two and three aircraft in 2018 and earlier in 2019, respectively. The deals were initially revealed via maintenance contracts announced by Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group (ADG), although the MoD later confirmed the total number to Jane’s .

The first of the five aircraft was rolled out by Marshall ADG during an official ceremony in mid-July 2019. As Marshall ADG noted at the time, the company is carrying out comprehensive depth maintenance and important modifications on all the aircraft including capability enhancements such as medical evacuation, avionics upgrades, and the provision of a passenger transport configuration.

The Bangladesh Air Force has previously noted that the acquisition of C-130J aircraft from the RAF provides a key enhancement to its current airlift capability. As well as performing in-country support of the aircraft, Marshall ADG will also be modifying the aircraft, including designing, developing, and installing medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) capability to enable the Bangladesh Air Force to carry out tasks within the country and overseas in support of UN missions.

There is some muttering that 16 EFT deal maybe has been done....new....i will seek to obtain confirmation......

Massive news if true....i dont want to get your hopes up with this as well as my own hope, but this time really keeping fingers crossed.

Its a weird number....i do not think BD defines a sqd as 16... but hey ho thats what i am hearing...

BD does define a squadron as 16.

.
Throughly hope the BAF delegation was not to finalise this only.

Yup.

Awfully quiet on the MRCA front.....
President announced a squadron of MRCA + 8 attack choppers for the air force so I guess EFT and Apache finally becoming reality

for Bangladesh 16 EFT is very good number, 2 more squadrons of j10s will guarantee complete deterrence.

.
Yup.

It's official.

Now the question is what?

Most like Apache.

MRCA, not sure.

Also, loving the fact the Indians and Burmese are probably soiling themselves right now.

If it is Eurofighter then has to be brand new Tranche 3 fighters that comes with AESA radar + Meteor missile. Even 16 fighters and associated support would come to 4 billion US dollars. Cost will be prohibitive for so few fighters.
Still think F-16 Refurbished Block 50/52 is more likely.

.
My source says new EFT 16 almost confirmed. Talks on for option for further 2 sqd in medium term. Techinal training and ability to indeginiously maintain the jets will will be set up from the outset. BD technical training to start prior to delivery which from what i am hearing wont be for a while. All initial pilot training will be undertaken by RAF.

Excellent news if it pans out.

When do you see the delivery happening if the deal goes through? also are they tranche 3 or older ones?

Not new because EFTthen will be on backorder to after 2024 will Kuwait will finish delivery

Yes. I hope this is the way. Our pilot needs some polish from RAF too

Old. 100% but can be upgraded with aesa and other avionics. Will still not be multirole fighter I think but I may be wrong about that.

If true that would be really significant news on many levels.

Lets hope it is!

From what i understand and guys its only a say so from one person who i trust to have accurately told me what he has heard. I am not in a position to confirm anything so am reserving my judgement.

From what i understand these will be new. As others have pointed out these will then need to be after supplying the mideast clients. Latest trance would make sense if BD is looking at a full maintenance package, pilot training etc so BAF has a long term view and such would conclude there will be some lead time before we see them in BD skies.

In another thread WAZ pointed out there are no old EFT for sale. With F35 coming online maybe RAF can start to reduce some of its current EFT numbers. All generation 1 EFT have been upgraded and are meteor capable.

Lets wait and see how things pan out. Old or new EFT with meteor must be the goal to check IAF raffles.

Hopefully these are new EFT in BD colours coming in a few years whilst BAF move to finalise couple of sqd of J10s.

1sqd EFT, 2 sqd J10 along with half a sqd of migs and 2.5 sqd of F7s and 2 sqd of Yaks and other oddball assortments I guess will sort of fullfil the BAF forces goal (with some streaching of the imagination regarding 10 sqd). Anyhow all conjecture until we hear something officially.

If it is indeed EFT as your source claims, I think it's even better than getting the F-16. The only question though will they be AESA equipped and Meteor capable?
As, for the forces goal 10 sqds by 2030 seems impossible now. However, 5 sqds MRCA procurement still seems possible. I definitely would like to see 2sqds EFT and 3sqds J-10CE by 2030. It will be the absolute deterrence against both IAF and MAF in my opinion. However, this is only my wishful thinking. So, let's see what happens for the next few years.
