এই মুহূর্তে বাংলাদেশে সবচেয়ে বেশি উচ্চারিত রাজনৈতিক দলটির নাম বাংলাদেশ জামায়াতে ইসলামী। ইসলামী ছাত্রশিবিরের নামও উচ্চারিত হচ্ছে জামায়াতের সঙ্গে; সমান তালে, একই ছন্দে। বিশেষত, রাজধানীর শাহবাগ চত্বর প্রায় দুই সপ্তাহ ধরে প্রকম্পিত হচ্ছে ‘জামাত-শিবির’ দুয়োধ্বনিতে।
উইকিলিকসের ফাঁস করা গোপনীয় মার্কিন কূটনৈতিক তারবার্তার ভান্ডারে জামায়াত-শিবিরের প্রসঙ্গ আছে। দেখা যাচ্ছে, জামায়াতে ইসলামীর নেতারা সব সময় আমেরিকান কর্তৃপক্ষের সুনজরে থাকার চেষ্টায় বা প্রতিপক্ষদের বিরুদ্ধে নালিশ জানাতে ঢাকায় মার্কিন দূতাবাসের রাষ্ট্রদূত ও অন্যান্য কর্মকর্তার সঙ্গে প্রায়ই দেখা-সাক্ষাৎ করেন। যেমন: একটি তারবার্তায় দেখা যাচ্ছে, ২০০৪ সালের ২১ আগস্ট আওয়ামী লীগের জনসভায় শেখ হাসিনার ওপর গ্রেনেড হামলার পর জামায়াতের অ্যাসিস্ট্যান্ট সেক্রেটারি জেনারেল আবদুর রাজ্জাক ও উপদেষ্টা শাহ আবদুল হান্নান সাক্ষাৎ করেন ঢাকায় তৎকালীন মার্কিন রাষ্ট্রদূত হ্যারি কে টমাসের সঙ্গে। জামায়াত তখন চারদলীয় জোট সরকারের দ্বিতীয় প্রধান শরিক। দলটির দুই নেতা রাষ্ট্রদূত টমাসকে এই বলে আশ্বস্ত করতে চান যে গ্রেনেড হামলায় জামায়াতের কোনো হাত ছিল না। শাহ হান্নান বলেন, ‘হামলার সঙ্গে জামায়াতে ইসলামীকে জড়িয়ে জনমনে বিভ্রান্তি ছড়ানোর উদ্দেশ্যে অপপ্রচার চালাচ্ছে ভারতের রিসার্চ অ্যান্ড অ্যানালাইসিস উইং (&#2480।’ তাঁরা দুজনই রাষ্ট্রদূতকে বলেন, ভারতের উদ্দেশ্য বাংলাদেশ সরকারকে অস্থিতিশীল করা এবং শেখ হাসিনাকে ক্ষমতায় আনা।
ওই বৈঠকে রাষ্ট্রদূত টমাস ছাত্রশিবিরের সহিংস কর্মকাণ্ডের ব্যাপারে উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করে জোর দিয়ে বলেন, সহিংসতা পরিত্যাগ করে শিবিরকে গণতান্ত্রিক প্রক্রিয়ায় অংশ নিতে হবে। তখন শাহ হান্নান রাষ্ট্রদূতকে বলেন, ‘শিবির শুধু বিএনপি ও আওয়ামী লীগের ছাত্রসংগঠনগুলোর আক্রমণের জবাব দিচ্ছে।’ কিন্তু রাজ্জাক স্বীকার করেন যে শিবির কখনো কখনো ‘বাড়াবাড়ি’ করে থাকে; তবে তাদের সব ধরনের সহিংস কার্যকলাপ বন্ধ করতে বলা হয়েছে। রাষ্ট্রদূত টমাস ওই তারবার্তায় লিখেছেন, সেদিন আবদুর রাজ্জাক ছাত্রশিবিরের নেতাদের সঙ্গে রাষ্ট্রদূতকে ডিনারের নিমন্ত্রণ করেন। তারবার্তাটির শেষে রাষ্ট্রদূতের মন্তব্য: ‘...আমরা শিবিরের সহিংসপ্রবণতা সম্পর্কেও যথারীতি সজাগ আছি। ২১ আগস্টের হামলার সঙ্গে জামায়াতে ইসলামী জড়িত—এমন অভিযোগের দংশনে স্পষ্টতই কাতর হয়ে দলটি উঠেপড়ে লেগেছে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র সরকারকে এই বলে আশ্বস্ত করতে যে তারা গণতন্ত্র ও অহিংস রাজনীতির প্রতি অঙ্গীকারবদ্ধ। কিন্তু দলটির অপেক্ষাকৃত কম বয়সী সদস্যদের অনেকে সহিংস আচরণ সমর্থন করেন এবং তাঁরা পশ্চিমা মূল্যবোধের বিরোধী। তাঁরা আমাদের নিবিড় পর্যবেক্ষণে থাকবেন।’
একাধিক তারবার্তায় দেখা যায়, জামায়াত-শিবির নিয়ে মার্কিন দূতাবাসের সবচেয়ে বড় উদ্বেগ ও আপত্তির বিষয় তাদের সহিংস আচরণ। কিন্তু জামায়াতের নেতারা মার্কিন দূতাবাসের কর্মকর্তাদের সঙ্গে যেকোনো সাক্ষাতের সুযোগেই নিজেদের শান্তিপ্রিয়, সহিংসতার বিরোধী বলে তুলে ধরার চেষ্টা করেন। বলেন, তাঁরা বাংলাদেশের সংবিধানের প্রতি অনুগত থেকে নিয়মতান্ত্রিক পন্থায় গণতান্ত্রিক রাজনীতি করেন; শান্তিপূর্ণ উপায়ে জনসাধারণের মন জয় করে বাংলাদেশে ইসলাম প্রতিষ্ঠা করতে চান। কিন্তু তাঁদের এসব কথাবার্তা মার্কিন দূতাবাসের কর্মকর্তারা বিশ্বাস করেন না, এমন ইঙ্গিতও স্পষ্ট হয়ে উঠেছে কোনো কোনো তারবার্তায়।
২০০৮ সালের ৫ মার্চের একটি তারবার্তায় দেখা যাচ্ছে, সেনা-সমর্থিত তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের প্রবল শাসনের মধ্যেও রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে শিবিরের দাপটের খবর পেয়ে ওই অঞ্চলে সরকারের অবস্থা কতটা নাজুক, তা নিরূপণ করার উদ্দেশ্যে মার্কিন দূতাবাসের কয়েকজন কর্মকর্তা ফেব্রুয়ারির মাঝামাঝি রাজশাহী গিয়েছিলেন। তাঁরা শিবিরের রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় শাখার সভাপতি ও সাধারণ সম্পাদকের সঙ্গে বৈঠক করেন। শিবিরের দুই নেতা তাঁদের বলেন, তাঁদের লক্ষ্য ‘জাতীয় জীবনে ইসলামের প্রভাব বৃদ্ধি করা। কিন্তু এই লক্ষ্য তাঁরা অর্জন করতে চান অবশ্যই গণতান্ত্রিকভাবে, সন্ত্রাসের পথে নয়।’ মার্কিন দূতাবাসের তৎকালীন চার্জ দ্য অ্যাফেয়ার্স গিতা পাসির লেখা ওই তারবার্তার এক জায়গায় মন্তব্য করা হয়েছে, ‘রাজশাহীর শিবিরের নেতারা যেমনটি দাবি করেন, শিবিরের খ্যাতি মোটেও সে রকম মধ্যপন্থী, সহিংসতাবিরোধী সংগঠন হিসেবে নয়।’ শিবিরের নেতাদের কথাবার্তা যে দূতাবাসের ওই দল বিশ্বাস করেনি, তার আরেকটি দৃষ্টান্ত: ‘শিবিরের দুই নেতা আরও দাবি করেন, তাঁদের সংগঠন জামায়াত থেকে সম্পূর্ণ স্বাধীন। এটি একটি অবিশ্বাস্য দাবি, কারণ জামায়াতের সদস্যরাই দূতাবাসের টিমের সঙ্গে শিবিরের যোগাযোগ ঘটিয়ে দিয়েছেন।’
২০০৭ সালের ১২ জুন সোনারগাঁও হোটেলের একটি ফাংশন রুমে তৎকালীন মার্কিন রাষ্ট্রদূত প্যাট্রিসিয়া এ বিউটেনিস জামায়াতের আমির মতিউর রহমান নিজামীর সঙ্গে বিদায়ী সাক্ষাৎ করেন। মুজাহিদ, কামারুজ্জামান, ব্যারিস্টার রাজ্জাকও সেখানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন। নিজামী রাষ্ট্রদূত বিউটেনিসকে বাংলাদেশে তাঁর ‘বন্ধুত্বসুলভ’ কাজের জন্য ধন্যবাদ জানান এবং আশা প্রকাশ করেন যে তিনি এ দেশের অনেক স্মৃতি সঙ্গে নিয়ে ফিরে যাবেন। জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক যেকোনো বিরোধ নিষ্পত্তির ক্ষেত্রে সংলাপের প্রতি তাঁর দলের অঙ্গীকারের কথা নিজামী জোর দিয়ে ব্যক্ত করেন। তিনি আরও বলেন, ‘আমেরিকা আমাদের অন্যতম বৃহৎ উন্নয়ন-সহযোগী, আমরা [ঢাকাস্থ মার্কিন] দূতাবাসের সঙ্গে সুসম্পর্ক বজায় রাখার চেষ্টা করি। একটি ইসলামি দল হিসেবে আমরা পশ্চিমা বিশ্বের সঙ্গে আরও ভালো সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করতে চাই।’ এর দুই বছর আগে, ২০০৫ সালে নিজামী যখন চারদলীয় জোট সরকারের শিল্পমন্ত্রী, তখনকার একটি তারবার্তায় তাঁর সম্পর্কে লেখা হয়: শিল্পমন্ত্রী নিজামী বাংলাদেশে ‘টাটার ২.৫ বিলিয়ন মার্কিন ডলারের বিনিয়োগ প্রস্তাবের বিরোধিতা করেছিলেন অংশত এ কারণে যে কোম্পানিটি ভারতীয়। তাঁর এই বিরোধিতাকে পাশ কাটানো হয় বাংলাদেশ সরকার যখন বিষয়টির কর্তৃত্ব দেয় বিনিয়োগ বোর্ডের কর্মতৎপর চেয়ারম্যানের হাতে। টাটার প্রকল্পের কিছু অংশ নিজামীর নির্বাচনী এলাকায় নেওয়ার প্রস্তাবের পর নিজামী এখন প্রকল্পটিকে সমর্থন করেন।’
২০০৬ সালের অক্টোবরের শেষে রাজনৈতিক সহিংসতার পর নিজামী, মুজাহিদ, কামারুজ্জামান ও আবদুর রাজ্জাক রাষ্ট্রদূত বিউটেনিসের সঙ্গে বৈঠক করেন। ২৮ ও ২৯ অক্টোবর ঢাকার রাজপথে ব্যাপক সহিংসতার জন্য আওয়ামী লীগকে দোষারোপ করেন নিজামী। তিনি বলেন, আওয়ামী লীগের লোকজন জামায়াতের ১৩ জন কর্মীকে হত্যা করেছে। ‘তার পরও আমরা আমাদের লোকজনকে সর্বোচ্চ ধৈর্য-সংযম দেখানোর জন্য বলছি।...আমাদের লোকজনকে প্রতিশোধপরায়ণ না হতে বলা আমার পবিত্র দায়িত্ব।’
জামায়াতে ইসলামীর নেতারা সেদিন বিউটেনিসকে ১০ মিনিট দৈর্ঘ্যের একটি ভিডিও প্রামাণ্যচিত্র দেখান, যেটি তাঁরা সহিংসতার টিভি ফুটেজ ব্যবহার করে তৈরি করেছেন। ছবি দেখা শেষ হলে নিজামী আবারও রাষ্ট্রদূতকে নিশ্চিত করে বলেন, জামায়াতে ইসলামী অহিংসার প্রতি অঙ্গীকারবদ্ধ। তিনি বলেন, জামায়াতে ইসলামীর নেতৃত্ব তার সমর্থকদের সহিংসতা থেকে বিরত থাকার আহ্বান জানানো অব্যাহত রাখবে এবং বলেন, তারা শুধু ‘আত্মরক্ষা করবে’।
২০১০ সালের ৩ জানুয়ারির এক তারবার্তা অনুসারে, ‘মার্কিন দূতাবাসের রাজনৈতিক কর্মকর্তার সঙ্গে এক বৈঠকে শিবিরের নেতারা ভীষণ আগ্রহের সঙ্গে তাঁকে অজস্র ছবি দেখান। সেগুলো সারা দেশের বিভিন্ন শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানের ক্যাম্পাসে অন্যান্য সংগঠনের সঙ্গে শিবিরের সদস্যদের সংঘর্ষের ছবি, তাঁদের আহত হওয়ার ছবি। শিবিরের নেতারা দাবি করেন যে তাঁদের ওই সদস্যদের অন্যায়ভাবে আহত করা হয়েছে। কিন্তু তাঁরা নিজেরা অন্যদের আহত করেছেন কি না, সে বিষয়ে তাঁরা কিছু বলেননি।’
এর পাঁচ বছর আগে, ২০০৪ সালের ১৫ ডিসেম্বরের একটি তারবার্তায় লেখা হয়েছে, ইসলামী ঐক্যজোটের একাংশের নেতা ফজলুল হক আমিনী মার্কিন দূতাবাসের পলিটিক্যাল কাউন্সেলরকে বলেছিলেন, ‘জামায়াত ক্ষমতালিপ্সু দল। আর এই দলের ভবিষ্যৎ নেতৃত্ব হবে “চরমপন্থী”। কারণ, তারা আসবে জামায়াতের ছাত্র শাখা ইসলামী ছাত্রশিবির থেকে, তারা প্রশিক্ষণপ্রাপ্ত ও সহিংস।’
২০০৫ সালের ২৬ জানুয়ারি পাঠানো র*্যাবের ক্রসফায়ার সম্পর্কে সমালোচনামূলক এক তারবার্তায় রাষ্ট্রদূত হ্যারি কে টমাস মন্তব্য করেছিলেন: ‘তবে ইন্টারেস্টিং বিষয় হচ্ছে, জামায়াতে ইসলামী বা তার ছাত্রসংগঠনের সঙ্গে সংশ্লিষ্ট কোনো ব্যক্তি এ পর্যন্ত র*্যাবের ক্রসফায়ারে হত্যাকাণ্ডের শিকার হননি। র*্যাবের আরও রাজনৈতিকীকরণ ঘটার সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে, কারণ এই সংস্থার প্রতিষ্ঠাকারী ও কর্তারা হলেন স্বরাষ্ট্র প্রতিমন্ত্রী ও বিএনপির সাংসদ লুৎফুজ্জামান বাবর, যিনি ইসলামপন্থীদের প্রতি সহানুভূতিশীল বলে অভিযোগ আছে এবং স্বরাষ্ট্রসচিব ওমর ফারুক, জামায়াতে ইসলামীর সঙ্গে যাঁর দীর্ঘদিনের সম্পর্ক রয়েছে।’
সহিংস পন্থাই জামায়াত-শিবিরের প্রধান সমস্যা। সেই ১৯৭১ সাল থেকে আজ পর্যন্ত তাদের ‘রাজনৈতিক’ তৎপরতার প্রধান ভঙ্গি সহিংস, ভীতিসঞ্চারী। পাকিস্তানের অখণ্ডতা রক্ষার পক্ষে আদর্শিক অবস্থান নেওয়ার কারণে নয়, মানবতার বিরুদ্ধে অপরাধ সংঘটন, অর্থাৎ সহিংসতার কারণে জামায়াতে ইসলামী নামের রাজনৈতিক দলটিকে অবশেষে গুরুতর সংকটে পড়তে হয়েছে।
কিন্তু দলটি আজও উপলব্ধি করতে পারেনি যে তাদের প্রধানতম দুর্বলতা হচ্ছে সহিংস মনোভঙ্গি, শক্তি প্রয়োগের প্রবণতা। তাদের অগ্রবাহিনী ছাত্রশিবির আশির দশক থেকে ‘রগকাটা’ সংগঠন হিসেবে পরিচিত। সম্প্রতি তাদের আচরণ আর রাজনৈতিক সংগঠনের মতো নেই, তারা হয়ে উঠেছে সংঘবদ্ধ দুষ্কৃতকারীদের মতো। তারা অতর্কিতে নেমে আসে রাস্তায়; বোমা-ককটেল ফাটিয়ে, নিরীহ সাধারণ মানুষের যানবাহনে ভাঙচুর চালিয়ে, আগুন লাগিয়ে ত্রাস সৃষ্টি করে; চোরাগোপ্তা সশস্ত্র হামলা চালায় আইনশৃঙ্খলা রক্ষাকারী বাহিনীর সদস্যদের ওপর; তারপর দুদ্দাড় পালিয়ে যায় দুষ্কৃতকারীদের মতো। জামায়াত-শিবিরকে এখন ধাওয়া করছে সাধারণ মানুষ: ফুটপাতের দোকানি, যানবাহনের চালক, সাধারণ পথচারী।
জামায়াত-শিবির যদি সহিংসতার পথেই এগোতে থাকে, তাহলে হয়তো অচিরেই অস্তিত্বের সংকটে পড়ে যাবে।

I'm all in for this protest as it is needed to teach AL a lesson but the fire in national mosque and stuffs is a bit worrying as they show the extreme side.

In Japan, because of busy schedule we have selected Saturday Iissha Namaaz for gathering and praying in all (as far as I know) the mosques. Last evening was such a prayer night. We have decided to send a letter signed by the Muslims living in Japan to protest the way the govt is dealing with the muslims in BD as well as the way the govt created a Nastik atmosphere whereby any one can insult Allah and his Prophet.

The present situation is the doing of AL. It surrendered the roads and streets to the AL thugs who then used all those bloggers to insult our religion and the Prophet. This thing will not go unnoticed by the population. Even persons like me, who wants moderation, are against AL stupidity of intentionally creating a situation that leads the country to the brink of a civil war.

Although I believe in a moderate Islam for BD, but, if the war is between atheism and Islamism then count me with the Islamist. AL is forcing people to take sides, both of which are extreme. AL has proved itself to be self-centered party who is bent to destroy the country's social fabrics by dividing people into two opposite poles. I do not think I am alone in my thinking. But, I will not be with the fundamentalists or with the Awami Leaguers in this forum when I write.

In my opinion whilst it maybe part of Arab culture it's hardly appropriate thing to partake in as part of the official duty of the DG of Islamic foundation. In my experience most belly dancers in the middle east and turkey are Russians and in Egypt some Coptic xains. It is tolerated and sometimes celebrated like in Egypt but its inappropriateness within BD context is hardly surprising.

Me personally I don't care for it. It belly rolling looks freaky to me. Although one has to admire the female form.... But that's another issue!!!

When in my assertion I said that belly dancing is part of Islam??? Belly dancing is nothing in Bangladesh compared to nude & half nude dance and drama that people watch in TV. A case was already filed against the DG and if he violated any rule or law he was supposed to get the due punishment. But is there any law which goes against such practice??? and what was the verdict of the court regarding this??

Does an indian rasakar like you know what civility is? You thugs don't hasitate to take off the clothes of people in broad daylight for intimidation. You liars are claiming that the heretic bloggers did not commit any crime these are the work of Jamaat and then your Rawami Olama League leaders are demanding severe punishment for the heretic bloggers. The lies of your rawami governemnt has thus been exposed, so STF and go back to the sh!thole where you reside.

Go to court for asking punishment of the atheist bloggers. If there is any law to deal with them they will be punished. Anyway how many people used to know some of these atheist blogger. They always seek attention and Jamaat/Shibir is giving it to them by utilizing the innocence of this muslim hujurs.

But important thing no one said a single thing to save the war criminals. You dnt need to cheer much about it. It is not for saving Jamaati war criminals and the number of atheist blogger in the Shahbagh movement is just few. Whatever their view is the whole country has a single demand and that is capital punishment of the war criminals.

In Japan, because of busy schedule we have selected Saturday Iissha Namaaz for gathering and praying in all (as far as I know) the mosques. Last evening was such a prayer night. We have decided to send a letter signed by the Muslims living in Japan to protest the way the govt is dealing with the muslims in BD as well as the way the govt created a Nastik atmosphere whereby any one can insult Allah and his Prophet.

The present situation is the doing of AL. It surrendered the roads and streets to the AL thugs who then used all those bloggers to insult our religion and the Prophet. This thing will not go unnoticed by the population. Even persons like me, who wants moderation, are against AL stupidity of intentionally creating a situation that leads the country to the brink of a civil war.

Although I believe in a moderate Islam for BD, but, if the war is between atheism and Islamism then count me with the Islamist. AL is forcing people to take sides, both of which are extreme. AL has proved itself to be self-centered party who is bent to destroy the country's social fabrics by dividing people into two opposite poles. I do not think I am alone in my thinking. But, I will not be with the fundamentalists or with the Awami Leaguers in this forum when I write.

Simply one of the best post in this thread. Although I'm ideologically opposed to both BAL and JI, the present situation is BAL's doing and BAL has to take responsibility for all the damage to our country caused by both its thugs' and JI!

Letter won't work, AL isn't in a situation to care a mere letter....rather send letter bomb .
