Many people have been charged for defaming Sheikh Mujibur Rahman under the country’s notorious internet laws.

A Bangladesh mayor who has refused to permit a mural depicting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s father on religious grounds has been arrested, police say.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was independent Bangladesh’s first leader and since his daughter took power in 2009, authorities have erected more than 1,000 murals and monuments to venerate him.

Dozens of people have also been charged for defaming him under the country’s notorious internet laws, which rights groups say have been used by Hasina to silence dissent.

Abbas Ali, the mayor of western Rajshahi city, found himself in the spotlight last month after an audio clip of his comments against a proposed Mujib mural went viral.

“This is not correct according to Islamic sharia,” he had said. “That’s why I won’t keep it. I will build everything as it’s planned, except for this last part.”

Amnesty condemns Bangladesh government's crackdown on dissent

Doctrinal traditions forbid depictions of people in murals or statues as part of the religion’s restrictions against idolatry.

The mayor’s comments triggered protests in his home town. He initially claimed the clip was fake, but later apologised on Facebook and fled town.

Police arrested Ali from a hotel in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday, spokesman Khandaker Al Moin told the AFP news agency.

“He admitted he made the comment. He was absconding in different hotels in Dhaka since November 23. We had information that he’s planning to flee the country,” he added.

The case follows last month’s sacking by Hasina of Zahagir Alam, the mayor of the industrial city of Gazipur after he allegedly defamed Rahman.

Alam and Ali were members of Hasina’s ruling Awami League party.

Mujib led his country to independence from Pakistan in 1971 after a horrific nine-month war that Bangladesh says killed as many as three million and displaced many more.

He was assassinated four years later along with most of his family.

Under his daughter, Hasina, 74, activists say the human rights situation in Bangladesh has deteriorated sharply, with clampdowns on free expression that have seen hundreds of journalists and activists arrested.

Hasina’s main political opposition has been crippled with its chief and her archrival Khaleda Zia jailed for corruption.

Maybe he likes a different pose of Bangbondhu?

This guy was hardcore Namajee. But he should've looked the other way when he did not.

You don't show disrespect to "Abba-jaan" (Daddykins🌹🌈💕). Period.

So what if daddy is six feet under. She won't let him die. It's been 50 years, she won't forget and she won't let the rest of Bangladesh forget either...total psycho when everyone loses parents at some point.

This has almost become like a political cult, with attempts by Hasina to name everything new after her father. This woman does not realize that after a while, people get sick of it and there is a backlash (they already did in Bangladesh two decades ago). It has become a sad joke in Bangladesh now. No one willingly pays respect to Bangabandhu when FORCED. You cannot FORCE these things.

The classic definitions of a political cult glorifying Bangabandhu involves a set of devotional practices (like hanging Murals of him everywhere and naming new govt, structures after him). Over time, AL idiots thought that this would have become the "new normal" rather than outlandish. It did not. If anything, people have started hating Hasina for it.

"Excessive devotion" and attempts of brain washing and "mind control" are highlights of the Bangabandhu political cult, the target-subjects are the clueless newly educated underclasses in Bangladesh and the attempts of this propaganda effort are ALWAYS foisted (and maintained) by fifth columnist India-shill AL foot soldiers, frequently Hindus. Thus the constant attempt to popularize Sanghi-friendly Indian cultural practices, which actually have failed miserably. Hindus in Bangladesh should realize that the more they do this, the closer they get to jeopardizing their identity as patriotic Bangladeshis and closer to being branded as real seditionists to be purged. Trying to manipulate 90% of a country when you represent only 10% is foolish.

There are too many Pro Pakistani Razakars in Bangladesh now. It is disturbing to see a huge number of Bangladeshis waving Pakistani flag during Pak-Bangla cricket match. These radicals should be sent to jail.

Yes there were two culprits of 1971 , but they were Butto and Yahyha Khan!

Mujib was not culprit, but he was rightful prime minister of Pakistan , elected by majority of Pakistanis.

( So you can stop your BS political correctness, that's hilarious) !

Don't always try to remain politically correct. Mujib even didn't declared the war of independence. The war of independence was declared by Ziaur Rahman on behalf of Mujibur Rahman.

So if operation searchlight was not started by Yahiya Bhutto axis , an independent Bangladesh wasn't necessary.

After starting operation searchlight on your own people, it was necessary to form a new country ( we named it Bangladesh) , as majority Pakistani ( East Pakistani) were feeling insecured in Pakistan.

So forming a new country for Muslims was necessary in order to save themselves from the culprit racist elites of west Pakistan.

Although I never blame west Pakistani (
present days Pakistan) common people for the discrimination, as you were completely unaware what's happening in the Eastern part of your country . Hence you are victims of Goebbelsian axis of Pakistan Dominion.

So keep it in mind that the rightful Prime minister of Pakistan will live forever , and the culprit ,criminal Bhutto who refused the mandate of Pakistani people and buried the democracy of Pakistan will be sunk in to oblivion.

Already PPP ( founded in 1967 ; some say that founded by KGB !) is in decline in Pakistan.

maybe after Hasina people will take down these murals and statues like they did of Saddam

you want political correctness, then here is political correctness. Mujib was arrested for treason long before 71 election results for conspiring with India against Pakistan, he was conspiring with your Hindu Uncles in Agartala India. Go read any of your Indian Uncles' chronicals about their achievements in BD. He was only let free because of our treacherous and cheap sellout politicians. The reason he was not given the PM position is not because he was Banglai but becuase he was a traitor by birth and later he proved it. Now you can put his picture on every street, in every home and name every street after him for all we care, for us he was a filthy traitor and will always be remembered as a traitor.

No actually I don't want it. Calm down , read again and reply. I exactly wanted the opposite.
Mujib was arrested for treason long before 71 election results for conspiring with India against Pakistan, he was conspiring with your Hindu Uncles in Agartala India.
Agartala conspiracy was false. Only some Pakistani and Awami league now consider it true , as it serve both of their purpose.

It makes Mujib a traitor in Pakistan and a deity in Bangladesh. And neither Mujib was a traitor, nor he is a deity as BAL nowadays want to introduce him.

Go read any of your Indian Uncles' chronicals about their achievements in BD
Exactly , Indian uncle's propagate such thing so that both Pakistani and Awami league nephew get beneficial.

Why colonel Osmani was absent during Niazi's surrender? Don't make me drag old things again as distance between Pakistan and Bangladesh is closing, so fighting over old issue is irrelevant.

Other than some Pakistani who are defending the traitor KGB product ( according to many ) Bhutto indirectly by equating him with Sheikh Mujib, I don't think others in Pakistan are interested on old topic!

He was only let free because of our treacherous and cheap sellout politicians.
Exactly sellout Pakistani politicians who had stolen the right of East Pakistani voters ; same as BAL is now doing . Stealing people vote in the middle of the night , and declaring themselves winner.

What's the difference huh? Pakistani fascist elite deprived it's citizen after then elected their rightful Prime minister Sheikh Mujib, while Bangladeshi fascist BAL is stealing voting right of the same people in the middle of the night!

And about development? Yes fascist BAL has many development work. But fascist Ayub Khan also developed a lot.

So what's the difference between treacherous Pakistani elites and present days BAL? No difference as both are criminal.

We are only tolerating them because they acted as lesser evil !

Now you can put his picture on every street, in every home and name every street after him for all we care, for us he was a filthy traitor and will always be remembered as a traitor.
LMAO ! Okay kid , now you are reacting too much. Stop repeating the melodramatic dialogue,I already answered them.

May be this Mayor wants a picture of Mujib in the 7th March speech in the Dhaka Race Course ground where he asked many times the west Pakistan leaders "why are you killing us? You are our brothers". He questioned the same thing at least four times that being brothers why do you kill us?

Mujib was arrested for treason long before 71 election results for conspiring with India against Pakistan, he was conspiring with your Hindu Uncles in Agartala India. No, it was west Pakistani elite military and civilian leaders who proved themselves to be the greatest traitors to the then nation of Pakistan. ZA Bhutto wanted a divided Pakistan where he could assume the Premiership in the west.

And that stupid Yahya Khan wanted to let Mujib and Bhutto fight so that he could keep on remaining as the Sadr of Pakistan. But, Yahya had to resign and Bhutto had to preside over a broken Pakistan.

Now, tell us why Mujib was a traitor and Bhutto-Yahya khan clique was not? Don't please talk any more about Agartala Conspiracy that was non-existent. Mujib did not declare outright independence of east Pakistan. He was taken to Layalpur jail, instead. So, how he can be blamed for anything that happened after 25th March?

Note the Mujib speech below on the 7th March 1971 and note how many times he begged PA not to kill our people in the east. He was pleading by saying, " You are our brothers, why do you kill our people"? He said it at least four times.

And what was the response from your generals?

Can any sane individual please answer under wat LAW can a man be arrested for talking abt another man (may he be mujib or whoever) on the phone. What crime did he commit by the rule of the law? Is there sumthing in it in the constitution or justice system?

Well you ever think Mujib wouldn't have had a reason to conspire against Pakistan with the Indians in the first place if it wasn't for the West Pakistan government treating and neglecting the East Pakistanis so badly? take some responsibility, this mentality is why that whole mess started in the first place
