Which Village, Which district of India?

My father's side was from Itna-Dhaka of India, my great-grandfather later purchased some large chunk of land, around 2000 acres in Barishal of India and shifted there. My mother's side was from Khulna of India.

Later some religious bigots with extremist views decided that they being the religious majority in some parts of India should not live with the religious minorities of their own kind, and they pitched for dividing India on religious lines. Riots broke out, and our families being religious minority Hindus in that particular part of India had to leave behind everything, including some dead bodies of our family members, and leave for the part of India where we were religious majority. A year or so later, the part of India where our ancestral homes and properties were situated broke off from India and become a new country 'East Pakistan', 24 years later that part again broke off from 'West Pakistan' and became 'Bangladesh'. But that happened later, ancestral homes of my parents were in India when those were their homes.

Hope that explains.

Btw @kobiraaz , that's a beautiful picture of a Bengali in your DP....I know a few Bengalis are still left in the part of India that became Bangladesh, but they are vanishing fast from Bangladesh.

Maybe someday human beings will evolve to become true human beings.

Maybe someday humanity will be above all other petty things that make people murderers of their own species.

In terms of minority rights, safety and security; Bengal is miles ahead of Bangladesh, Bangladeshi minorities population still migrating to Bengal will tell you the real picture. Bangladesh also has an "Enemy Property Act", right?

When you are compelling your minority population to leave Bangladeshi by one method or another, don't claim the legacy of the famous persons from the minority community, especially when they were not Bangladeshi citizens.

Enemy property act was one time affair during 1965-1971 war.During Pakistan period, properties of hindus who left for India was named as enemy property due to 1965 war.Afrer Bangladesh independence there is no Enemy property acts.Properties which hindus left during Pakistan period renamed as Vested property. You are making an impression here that Bangladesh govt. is currently forcefully taking away hundu's property by leveling them enemy which is not correct..Those Hindu who have gone India after 1971 done so with choice and they sold their property here and gone India with cash.Perhaps they don't want to live side by side with neighbors who eat cow or thought streets in Kolkata are build with gold, diamond etc.

Many of the Bihari Muslims lost their family members as well before migrating to Pakistan. It was a two sided affair. Anyway I am sorry for your loss.

If only Chittoranjan Das and Suvash Chandra Bose Could live a little Longer.

It's not easy to leave ones ancestral home, when the Bengali religious minorities of Bangladesh are leaving the country which was supposed to be a country of Bengalis, then it is better to introspect. However, Bangladeshi government and majority people actually want their minority Hindu community to leave, so I don't really expect you to introspect, you know the truth already.

Situation is worse in rural areas of Bangladesh, there religious minorities are persecuted and driven out of their homes to grab their property. Majority community has the number, and the job is easy...one fine morning the guy eying the property of his Hindu neighbour just need to go out and shout that the 'malaun Hindu' has insulted Islam, Nabi, Quran, or whatever...the resulting mob will ensue that the poor fellow is either dead or crossed the border to India with family. And if he manages to escape the mob, then Bangladeshi police will catch him and put him in jail for blasphemy. Your country puts science teachers in jail for saying that there is no god and no heaven, we can assume how things are for the poor people.

Yes, lots of people from all sides suffered during partition. In case of Punjab both sides almost completely wiped out the 'other' community, but in case of (undivided) Bengal the most brutal riots and massacres happened in the Bangladesh part, Indian part of Bengal was relatively more peaceful, probably because of Gandhi who made sure that Hindus don't fight back and accept the suffering...he had little or no control over the Muslim community.

And Biharis are also an unwanted group in Bangladesh, mostly for their support to Pakistan in 1971. But Bengali Hindus of Bangladesh were not pro-Pakistani, and they suffered even after the partition and continuously leaving their country even today. I know this from direct interactions because my 'desher bari' is in a place where every year thousands of Bangladeshi Hindus come and settle as neighbours after buying land or house, they are not poor or refugees, they leave because of a typical insecurity that most minority groups suffer in most Muslim countries around the world. But in smaller towns and villages of Bangladesh minorities live in constant fear that they can be attacked any day over a sermon from the local hardliner or some mullah or huzur declaring that Hindus are evil worshipers.

The issue with Bangladesh is that it is torn between its 'Bengali' identity and 'Muslim' identity, and the 'Muslim' identity is winning. East Pakistan was created after separation from 'Hindu' India in 1947 on the basis of its 'Muslim' identity, later when the Muslim identity couldn't keep the East & West Pakistan parts together, then Bangladesh was created after separation from 'Punjabi' Pakistan in 1971 on the basis of it's 'Bengali' identity. Right now, Bangladesh's 'Muslim' identity is the political tool of BNP & associates, and its 'Bengali' identity is the political tool of 'AL', who interestingly also plays the 'Muslim' card; it being a stronger identity.

You need not be sorry for individual losses, but Bangladeshis collectively should feel sorry for the fact that in all these years Bangladesh is far from becoming a nation that can truly be called a country of Bengalis...
