Bangladesh-India rail link on fast track after PM intervention

After opening a direct bus route between Tripura and Bangladesh, the Centre has stepped in to lay a direct rail link between the land-locked state and Dhaka. Top sources told HT that Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped in to remove bottlenecks in the project.

The government will build a 15-km-long broad gauge rail line from Agartala to Akhaura, a city in south-east Bangladesh, which will give India’s northeastern states a key link to Chittagong ports and large markets in Sylhet and Dhaka.

The plan had almost come to a standstill after the Tripura government expressed its inability to pump state funds for the project. But after meetings between Modi and chief minister Manik Sarkar, the Indian Railways have decided to bear the cost.

“After its preliminary survey, the railways had told us to bear `350 crore for land acquisition. We put our foot down. Now the railways have made a revised plan, whereby the entire rail line would be constructed on pillars—like the Delhi metro—above ground. The requirement of land and its cost will now be significantly low,” Sarkar told HT.

Currently, Bangladesh’s lone rail link with India passes through Kolkata. The British-era rail corridor between Agartala and Dhaka was snapped after Partition in 1947.

Sarkar is also hopeful for an early resumption of train services. “This Bangladesh government has never objected to any development plan that involves Tripura. Sheikh Hasina has a soft corner for Tripura,” said Sarkar.

Apart from attending the meeting of North-East CMs with Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday, Sarkar has so far held two exclusive meetings with the prime minister. Putting aside their political and ideological differences, the four-time CM maintains a cordial working relation with him.

For hauling anything heavy through these tracks,Bangladesh should upgrade its rail infrastructure :disagree::disagree:

The Bangladesh Railway has decided to use 90-pound rail (one metre of rail weighing 90 pounds) on the two routes, which is not fit to carry heavier Indian wagons with 22.9-tonne axle load, experts say. The 90-pound rail can carry a maximum of 22.5-tonne axle load. The load on two connected wheels on two sides is called one axle load. Railway engineers fear that the rehabilitated routes with 90-pound rail can give in any time if the heavier Indian wagons frequently move on the Rajshahi-Rohanpur-Singhabad route and the Parbotipur-Birol-Radhikapur track in Dinajpur district. In a letter to the railway headquarters, the railway’s general manager has suggested that the Indian wagons should carry 18-tonne axle load—4.9 tonnes below the Indian wagon capacity—for the safety of the tracks

But then Bangladeshi members are interested in mocking Indian metro rail systems & calling Indian projects as ' just CGIs ' :hitwall:

is land so precious in tripura that they have to build 15 km above ground track on pillars?

.
Bangladesh should demand $7 billion dollar downpayment in greenback from India before any transit permit.

Bangladesh has absolutely nothing to gain from this rail connectivity. It is only to improve the rail-logistics for Tripura, which is a land-locked Indian state - and which otherwise had to go around Manipur and Assam to get to Indian mainland (costly connectivity).

Strategically - why should we contribute to development of Tripura's industrialization (or for that matter any of the 'seven sisters')?

Makes no sense for us whatsoever. Let these places stay the idyllic backwater they always were.

That's what the Tribune meant by 'Money wasted'.

Honestly SHW's days are numbered. This Indian bootlicking has exceeded all sane estimates...

As China grows onto the uncontested Asian power within the next decade, Indian influence
in BD will come to an end.

Enjoy your fun while it lasts.

China doesn't have the soft power to become the uncontested Asian power. It can have economic and military power but it will be contested by us. And people go where money is not necessarily out of love and respect. Something only US could achieve.

But I welcome you to keep drumming is Chinese march. Atleast we will have fun.

:omghaha: our products will flood local stores (just like pran co. in west bengal) :flame: it will be cheaper to import from Bangladesh rather than carrying products from mainland across Bangladesh :-) and tripura will have access to different varities of products win win situation for every body.
