Dhaka: Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha (SK Sinha), the senior most judge of Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC), was appointed as the 21st chief justice of the Bangladesh.

Justice Sinha, who turns 64 next month, will be the first religious minority as well as non-Muslim and also ethnic minority to hold the top position in Muslim-majority Bangladesh since the independence in 1971.

President Md Abdul Hamid made the appointment as per the article 95 (1) of the constitution, Law Ministry Secretary Abu Saleh Sheikh Zahirul Haque Belal said.

Law ministry issued a gazette notification in this regard on Monday afternoon.

The appointment will come into effect on January 17, as present Chief Justice Md. Muzammel Hossain will retire on January 16.

He will serve just over three years as Chief Justice with his retirement due in early 2018.

Law Minister Anisul Huq said on Monday the outgoing Chief Justice would end his term on January 16 on reaching 67, the retirement age for SC judges. The swearing-in of Justice Sinha would take place the following day at the Bangabhaban.

During his judgeship period in the Appellate Division, Justice Sinha delivered a number of landmark judgments including those on the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the 5th and 13th amendments to the constitution and has been an appeals judge in the on-going war crimes trials.

Born on Febuary 01, 1951, Sinha began his career in Sylhet enrolling himself with the local bar in 1974.

Justice Sinha obtained LLB, enrolled as an advocate of the district court, Sylhet in 1974 and practiced in that court under the guidance of two reputed civil and criminal lawyers. He conducted sessions trial cases independently till end of 1977.

Then he enrolled as an advocate of the High Court and the Appellate Division in 1978 and 1990 respectively. During this period, he worked with eminent lawyer SR Pal as his junior till the date of elevation to the bench in 1999.

Justice Sinha elevated as judge of the High Court on October 24, 1999 and as judge of the Appellate Division on July 16, 2009.

This govt. will give every post to hindu minority to keep minority voter to its side . it is already known that hindu means Awami supporter . i have no problem with a hindu chief justice as every citizen have right to get his her position of any race and religion . but problem with this govt. she is giving key position to hindu minority to consolidated her power.as a chief justice can sinha uphold his neutrality or will be biased time will tell . i only expect he will keep highest court out of any controversy .

This is great gesture by BD. BD was first created for Muslims only. That was a great mistake. Later we had to pay the price in 71 war. All of our assets were destroyed and a confused nation took some more times to recover from political anarchy. But we have made a secular prosperous nation now. While our neighbors will turn communal, Im sure BD will be the only liveable place to live equally.

Its easy to pass comments. Minorities in a country are more cautious of their conduct and the one who occupies the highest place of justice is supposed to be above all biases. Have you read a hindi story called "Panch Parameswar"?

Panch Parmeshwar is the famous story of Munshi Premchand, who is also known as the Shakespere of Hindi literature.Most Indians have read this short story of two friends Jumman Sheikh and Algu Chaudhary in schools. When Algu Chaudhary is elected as the 'Sarpanch' of the village and passes a verdict against his best friend Jumman, friends become foes. But in due course, when Jumman becomes the 'Sarpanch' and sits on the Judgement seat,he realizes that Algu was right. The one, sitting on the Judgement seat can not be subjective and biased. An ideal Judge (Sarpanch) is always objective and unbiased. For oppressed, a Judge is like a God !

Please dont undermine your judiciary by flimsy comments.
