What's new

Bangladesh GDP per capita hasn't crossed Pakistani GDP per capita

If the sky high claims of countries like Pakistan India and bangladesh are true about their economies then why most of their people are still wandering for livelihoods in GCC and in the west? Anyone??

.
You are comparing IMF data for Bangladesh and govt. data for Pakistan? As IMF data for Pakistan is unavailable for 2017, than why don't use govt. vs govt. data for both country for balance ? By that account-
Bangladesh -$1602
Pakistan-$1629=1% higher than Bangladesh.
Next year, IMF will release data on Pakistan for 2017.Which may or may not show, whether Bangladesh crossed Pakistan in per capita GDP,albeit by only few dollars.
For 2016, it is
Bangladesh-$1411
Pakistan-$1468

There is a high possibility that Bangladesh's per capita GDP has crossed Pakistan in 2017.Whether or not,it can be confirmed by the next year when IMF will publish Pakistan's figure for 2017.

No I am not doing it. I am quoting Pakistan State Bank figures and IMF also quotes Pakistan state bank figures and since Bangladesh was created Pakistan GDP per capita was and is ahead of Bangladesh so it is not up to me to prove it, It's up to those whom are spreading fake news.

A few days back IMF was showing Pakistan GDP at $314 bn while Pakistan government claimed it was $304 bn so IMF was quoting more than Pakistani government itself. IMF also says Pakistan has proven 36% informal economy.

Thirdly, In economics when comparing two countries GDP PPP is used and Pakistan GDP PPP per capita is 28% more than Bangladesh.

And if you don't believe IMF than you can go to world bank site here:-

http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.PCAP.CD

Good luck BDesh. Pakistan is not a country which you should compete with, look east, have some right benchmark.

yeah they should look towards India in which the life of a cow is more important than human being and where access to electricity is just 77-78% against Pakistan whose population access to electricity is 97.5% according to World Bank.

. .
.
Ah the "SHADOW ECONOMY" excuse.

The informal sector accounted for more than 40% of the total gross value added of Bangladesh

https://www.adb.org/publications/informal-sector-and-informal-employment-bangladesh

Informal economy excuse?? No excuse, Without informal economy Pakistan economy is bigger, read the data carefully first.

Secondly that publication is of 2010. You should first read that publication before posting it.

Again I am telling that Economists use GDP PPP per capita when comparing two countries and Pakistan GDP PPP per capita is 28% more than Bangladesh.

I don't understand why people with very limited economic knowledge come and comment with old or fake data.

.
So - someone explain to me some basic facts since I am no financial whiz.

If Pakistan is claiming an underground informal economy then what about Bangladesh? Is IMF counting or not counting Bangladesh' informal economy (which I know exists)?

Same thing about Mr. Dar's claim about GDP calculation methods for calculating Pakistan's GDP. Won't those Calculation methods apply to calculation of Bangladesh' GDP too?

How does this change anything? Not taking sides - just some basic questions.....

I found it a bit odd that a South Asian Finance minister can lecture and give 'assignments' to the World Bank (or for that matter IMF) on calculating something like Pakistan's GDP. Maybe Pakistan can come up with their own calculation done by Pakistani financial experts which is more accurate than either the World Bank or IMF. The calculation method can be transparent and open so it can be scrutinized by all.

Too many times calculation of GDP is such an nationalistic and egotistical issue (trying to hide reality), and when we are making silly arguments about which govt. in South Asia is actually more direly f*ck*d, separated by a few measly dollars. Excuse my French.

What we ideally should be doing, is to complement each others economies, which is what we need more than ever.

Our economies aren't cricket matches, no one really is supposed to win against each other.

I believe we have far better chances to win together.

The colonial powers started this distrust, and we continue to the benefit of their military industrial complex, and to the severe detriment of each of our fragile economies.

Let me answer your question one by one.

Pakistan, Bangladesh and all other low income countries have informal economies but it depends on their way of governance to bring it to formal.

Indian experts are claiming that their informal economy has shrunk to 17.22% of their GDP.

Pakistani experts have come up with their estimates and back in 2008-09 they come up with figure of up to 91% of GDP.

There is something known as base year which is described as:-
A base year is the first of a series of years in an economic or financial index. A base year in an index is normally set to an arbitrary level of 100. New, up-to-date base years are periodically introduced to keep data current in a particular index.

Now India & Bangladesh updated their base year but Pakistan tried along with India & Bangladesh but couldn't do so due to political tensions in 2005-06. We are still using 1999-2000 as base year so Pakistan informal economy is definitely bigger than India & Bangladesh.

When Nigeria updated their base year after such a long time their GDP grew by 89%.

And our Finance Minister authorized World Bank to re-calculate our GDP because World Bank is a neutral source and they have the expertise & right to do so not Pakistan or any other country.

.
The rate at which our population is growing, it is only a matter of time. The census results will increase our population size to around 220 million people at least in 2017, so this will have a big impact on statistics where thus far a population size of 190 million has been used. Is there any political party brave enough to support population control?

Appreciate your detailed explanation. I have a long way to go to understand these concepts and have my work cut out for it.

Actually the whole GDP nonsense is totally just dick measuring.

What is important is the end result for the people in terms of

Health, education, safety, qualiy of life etc etc.

If X country has twice the GDP per capita of Y country, but Y country people live longer healthier lives, get better education and quality of life - which country is more successful?

Lastest data from census shows a population near 210-220 million. I have always doubted morons like @RiazHaq who used to bray about how per capita parameters of Pakistan are better.

This news article in the OPs post says the following and I quote it :-

https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/205181-Per-capita-income-rises-64-percent-to-1629-in-201617
... because of under performed industrial and services sectors, it is still the fastest pace of growth since 2006-07 when the GDP expanded by 6.8 percent. Size of Pakistan’s economy reached $304.4 billion in the current fiscal year

The per capita income has been calculated on the basis of projected population of 197.3 million for the current fiscal year of 2016-17 compared to population size of 193.6 million in the previous year.

Now I am assuming the pakistani population to be 210 million which is lower of the limit given and Pakistan's GDP to be $310 billion for 2017 which is even higher than the value given. This yields the following number :-

310,000 / 210 = 1476.19 dollars per capita.

Given these realities Bangladesh is indeed ahead of Pakistan in this parameter.

And if you are reading @RiazHaq , the Intellectual Yet Idiotic (IYI) buzurgwaar, your data has always been wrong as you never marked it to reality on ground.

Your name tells me that you're women. Check your language. How you are calling Mr Riaz haq a "MORON"???

I have reported your post and I thought I shall explain to you how GDP per capita is calculated based on proven data but after reading your complete post and your writing skills I have came to know that you don't have any economic knowledge and for your information he (Riazhaq) is an expert while you are a fed up newbie. At least talk properly, your words represent your mentality.
