Bangladesh gaining 20 sq-km land a year

Wouldn’t this land be highly unstable and at risk to erosion? It would be a mudflat at best, right?

Initially it would be unstable but with times vegetation will grow and the land will become more stable with more silt washing up and mangrove forest taking over the island. To accelerate the process Bangladesh govt is creating Mangrove forest since 1970s in the coastal areas. Now we have more than 1500 sq. km planted Mangrove forest in newly emerged islands and shore lines in the coast of Bangladesh.

The importance of Mangrove forest for Bangladesh can not be overstated.

1. Mangrove forest's root system stabilize silt on the coastal land and gradually elevate the shoreline. This is very much beneficial to counter possible sea level rise.

2. Mangrove forest break the intensity of Hurricane and Cyclone by acting as the first line of defence. Thus hugely reduces fatalities and property damages.

3. It is one of richest biodiversity hotspots in the world, sheltering hundreds of species of reptiles, mammals, birds etc.

Bangladesh is fortunate to own the largest Mangrove forest in the world. The Sunderban.

Yes, the new islands are still unstable, but some have stabilized so that high tide cannot submerge much of these new lands in the BoB. Govt has taken steps to raise the shore of many islands.

As far as I know, no island has yet been allocated for inhabiting by the farmers. One island named Bhashan Char has been allocated to Rohingya refugees, though!!

Indians and Pakistanis will not like this gaining of extra land area in BD. They wish BD to go under the Sea because of environmental pollution.

The gaining of land is all because of Himalayan water flowing into BD all through the year that carries silt.

This process started 60 million years ago when the Indian Plate separated from Australia and moved northward that created the Himalayas. Before that Australia and India (minus the Bengal area) used to be the same land.

You right we also dont like people gaining more land or losing more land in swali land and maritus and micronesia

It is India and Indians who are helping us to gain land by asking the common rivers to send billions of tons of silt to BD and this silt is helping us to gain more and more land every year.

This will continue forever unless a big earthquake reverses the flow of river water.
