What's new

Bangladesh gaining 20 sq-km land a year

.
Mind you the biggest environmental problem of Bangladesh isn't rising sea levels, but soil and (fresh) water degradation, due to decades of lack of environmental neglect.

What's more worrying is unlike the sea-level problem, these matters aren't even taken seriously by the government. Plenty of academics keep warning them.

It's what happens when you're ruled by a bunch of khet halfwits with little technical or organizational skills and experience.

Most of current Bangladeshi ministers started their carrier as political goons. Dont expect anything from them except corruption.

BTW, our BCS system and cadres aren't good either.

Adversity is the mother of innovation. It worked for us in the past. Hopefully, we can make the next transition.
Bold part: This Mother of Invention Theory is true for other nations but not so true for BD. If true, BD would have done the Delta Plan and others by itself.

Mother of Invention is correct for people who are born in Netherlands-like countries. The Netherlands did all its Polder jobs by itself without waiting for an idiot country called BD to develop Poldering methods and help them out.

But BD is begging that country to help it out with the poldering works.

Indians and Pakistanis will not like this gaining of extra land area in BD. They wish BD to go under the Sea because of environmental pollution.

The gaining of land is all because of Himalayan water flowing into BD all through the year that carries silt.

This process started 60 million years ago when the Indian Plate separated from Australia and moved northward to the east that created the Himalayas. Before that Australia and India (minus the Bengal area) used to be the same land.
are we this much bad ??????????

dude why would we want bangladesh to go under? You are literally in a different part of the world, one that doesn,t concern us.......

Sedimentation?
Yes, it is heavy sedimentation. Each year the Ganges, Jamuna, and Meghna Rivers of Bangladesh transport more than one billion tonnes of sediment from their catchments in India, China, Nepal, and Bhutan to this delta region.

Now, let me do some math on the approximate volume of 1 billion tons of sediment. A cubic meter (m3) of soil weighs approximately 1.8 tons. So, if it is 1 billion (1,000,000,000) tons, then the volume is about: 1,000,000,000 tons/1.8= 550,000,000 m3.

Our Seaepths near the shorelines are shallow, less than 20 meters deep. For the sake of argument, if we assume this depth at 50m, the sedimentation would create a new land area of 10 km2 every year.

Someone can do his/ her math because I did it in a hurry.

Wouldn’t this land be highly unstable and at risk to erosion? It would be a mudflat at best, right?

No we don’t. Now turn your attention to India where it should be.
Yes, you are right. But, India is aware that it is unable to stop either the flow of time or the flow of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna - all those mighty rivers that carry soil and silt from Nepal and India that expands the land areas of Bangladesh.

We should make a separate ministry on Land reclamation related managements. With proper management we can have more fertile agricultural lands...
Bangladesh is creating water management body similar to Netherlands as part of 'Delta plan 2100'. I don't know about details, but it will co-ordinate all the short, medium and long term water resource management objectives in Bangladesh very similar to Netherlands which I have read in papers related to Delta plan 2100.
