What's new

Bangladesh Cuisine & Restaurants

Dude relax. Looks like you're rearing up your behind for a fight

This scenario has been seen here many times before. The menu and selection changes to more casual with (relatively) more reasonable prices or - as is the norm, the patrons stop patronizing the place, and the place closes. Simple as that. Dhaka's skyview restaurants from the early 90's are a great example (Sky Room, White House etc.). Maybe @BDforever can vouch if he wasn't too young back then.

My point is - as the clientele gets more mature by having more options - they stop paying Tk.1000 for a simple club sandwich, no matter how nice the place.

Bah besh. Shuney khushi holam

Uhh no. You need to learn how to assess situations a lot better. FAIL

In that case, Dhaka is weird.

Established restaurants do not reduce prices (unless during festive and/or during special offers' season). Let me tell you that even if 10 new hotels open up in the immediate vicinity of the Westin, Prego is not going to reduce their F&B rates (as is the case with established restaurants in 5 star hotels worldwide) - plain and simple. Restaurants closing down because of the lack of patronage is another story altogether. If you're referring to room rates fluctuating with increased competition, then you're spot on, else you're waaaay off the global target.

Awright fine Mr. Hotelier.

I'm not talking theoretical - I am recounting what I actually have observed and how prices fluctuate here. We're not talking global, we're talking local. Menus change all the time and so do prices to suit demand.

Go back a few posts and see the astronomical prices being charged for supposedly 'normal' fare at Dhaka restaurants and see if people in Mumbai would actually pay for that type of food in a similar type (class) of restaurant. Some restaurants in Dhaka are literally committing highway robbery and that in the longer term is not sustainable. Not trying to prove a point - take it or leave it for what it is.

haha now you're going tangential - as usual! We are not talking about changing menus to suit demand, or changing menus depending upon the season; you were talking about A-grade global restaurants like Prego changing (reducing) their prices owing to the opening up of other 5 star hotels in Dhaka. That is ludicrous!

OK fine Har ho geya mera aur jeet tumhara. You are right.

Now please go post a thread on nice hidden restaurants and eateries in Mumbai. I've been doing some hard work here for weeks now and no one wants to return the favor.

How about some premium ice cream - and that too with (ahem) everyone's 'Ferrero Rocher' flavour at 'Club Gelato'?? Nothing else works better to soften the mood of your female 'muse' and earn some great 'brownie points'...

Dhaka foodies are rejoicing at the opening of another jewel in Dhaka's culinary crown - Picasso. The menu is mainly Tuscany style Italian but there are other Italian specialties as well. Observe the sumptious decor, I think this can put almost anything in the subcontinent to shame (image copyrights PicassoBD) ...and yes I've seen top-shelf eateries in Bangkok, Mumbai and Delhi as well...

OK from Haute Cuisine to more wallet friendly choices. Here's a garden variety fish and chips oulet in Khilgaon (a distinctly 'non high-brow' area on Dhaka's eastern end). But apparently a very popular joint. Image copyright 'Fish-N-Fish'.

A new branch of the Coffee World franchise is back in Dhaka's Banani neighborhood. They opened their door for the customers on 27 November 2014. The entire Coffee World team, headed by Noushaba Huq (head of operations) formally welcomed all the walk-in customers, along with the Chairman and other Directors of Ascent Group on the formal launching held on 29 November.

With the absence of Starbucks franchises in the local market - it is left up to local retailers to bring great coffee to the masses - minus the hype and markup. Making Coffee, Lattes or Mochas is not rocket science. No TOT required :-).

The new Coffee World is located at the ground floor of Chandiwala Mansion (Plot #1, Road # 11, Block G, Banani).
Coffee World, run by Etcetera Bangladesh Pvt. Ltd. (a concern of Ascent Group) has been an established and popular brand in the food industry of Dhaka in the last 8 years, for its unique coffee beverages and the variety of food and desserts.
