Bangladesh is going to be considered the most important country in America's security concerns in Asia-Pacific region, The National Interest indicates in an article.

The US international affairs magazine says with US strategy and attention increasingly shifting from the Asia-Pacific to the Indo-Pacific, the long-neglected states of South Asia and the Indian Ocean will assume greater geopolitical significance in the years ahead.

"Public polling indicates that Bangladesh’s population is one of the most pro-American in the region, and officials in Dhaka are generally enthusiastic about further strengthening ties with the United States," adds the article titled "How Bangladesh Can Improve Indian Ocean Security".

It referred to the recent Rohingya crisis affecting Bangladesh, and mentioned that Dhaka has expressed gratitude to Washington for the support it’s provided during the crisis but insists that international pressure on the Myanmar regime must continue.

The magazine focussed on the US focus on this region, in the context of Bangladesh's increasing engagement with India and China.

However, Washington looks more concerned about China's transactional and business-like relationship with Bangladesh and defence cooperation between the two countries.

"There is also some skepticism in Dhaka about the broader strategic implications of the BRI, of the pitfalls of becoming ensnared in a Chinese “debt trap,” and of the underhanded tactics employed by Chinese firms," wrote the magazine.

Naming other South Asian nations that are also neglected in Washington's Asia policy, such as Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, The National Interest called Bangladesh "the largest and arguably the most important of the group".

The article pointed out that Bangladesh is the eighth largest country in the world with 165 million people, which is equal to combined population of Britain, France and Canada. It also has the world’s fourth-largest Muslim population, behind only Indonesia, India and Pakistan, the article added.

The magazine also appreciated the current Awami League government for adopting a "zero-tolerance approach to Islamist terrorism.

"Nevertheless, a number of terrorist and extremist militant groups with transnational linkages continue to pose a threat to Bangladesh and the region," the article said emphasising the need for America's engagement counterterrorism cooperation.

Saying that America is already the top importer of Bangladeshi goods, the article also mentioned about Dhaka's interest in increasing bilateral trade, easing trade restrictions, reducing tariff and encouraging more US investment in Bangladesh.

The article predicted that with the Trump administration promoting a new free and open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) strategy, Bangladesh will have new opportunities to diversify its sources of investment, strengthen ties with the United States, and position itself as a net contributor to security in the Indian Ocean.

"In this regard, Dhaka should consider explicitly endorsing the Trump administration’s FOIP strategy, as well as its vision for regional infrastructure. That vision emphasises transparency, responsible financing and high-quality standards — all things the BRI has been criticized for lacking," the article insisted.

It added that the Trump administration "should consider increasing the number of port calls and high-level defense exchanges with Bangladesh as well as bilateral and trilateral military exercises, potentially to include India and/or Japan."

"Bangladesh might also be considered for observer status at the annual India-US-Japan Malabar exercises."
US always oppressed Muslims all around the world for oil.
There was no such thing called "Islamic Terrorist" just before 100 years and Islam has been around from around 1400 years.
They successfully portrayed Muslims from all around the world "Terrorist", millions of people lost home, hundreds of thousands of people died.

Just think, without US ever being in the middle east, how developed entire region could have been.

US never wanted progress of others except for themselves.

But China; she brought good news for everyone with progress of hers.
She really wants development and peace in this region.
And that is something that we should appreciate.

Holy sh!t ! Uncle Sam just noticed a new kid in town. May lord have mercy on this poor hard working child.
Not only Uncle Trump, but also any other uncles will turn away from a double-faced dubious country in the west of India. You have been eating Biriany, Qorma, Haleem and Nihari all the time because of $33 billion thrown to you by the USA during only a few years. No wonder Uncle Trump has decided to withdraw further dollar.

In our case, we will not allow the creation of Taleban on our soil and then ask USA for money to destroy them. When the old boy in our west behaves unscrupulously, it is obvious that Uncle Trump will find out a new honest boy in the east.

Hah, don't fall down that rabbit hole if you can help it.

The BD psyche here is very fragile, reactionary one. Almost everything is based on the India-bogeyman/deity (which replaces the earlier generation West Pakistan one, which also lingers to large degree)...when really their realised power competitor in the area is Burma (at best), which they have been dismal at proving squat with. This phenomenon has ruined almost every attempt at a sound conversation.

Let them think of themselves as the bullied punching bag eternally....they smack away all ladders to something else consistently....because their hollow ego prefers dissonance buffer than reality, always. Its basically who they are now. Need a few generations to elapse to have some small chance overall with this lot's average.

One of the two clowns you are talking to was braying last year US would have already created a Free Arakine state by now (or joined it to BD)...along with the Dhaka alladin skyscraper delusion and myriad of other ones that strike his fancy at the time....so of course now he is back to the ole US is <insert whatever> and has always been that way (as though BD is worth serious time and attention on some fantasy scale). Good amusement.

@Aung Zaya

I have to agree with the dismal (from my ethnic point of view) finding that they are comical. Tragi-comedy, actually.

Are you actually calling yourself the "new honest boy" of "Uncle Trump"? :woot: The same Trump who came to power on his promise of a Muslim ban in the USA?

Never in the world have I seen Muslims so pro-USA as they are in Bangladesh. Even after the USA invaded multiple Muslim countries in the past decade, leading to the deaths of millions of innocent Muslim civilians in the Iraq War ALONE, not even counting the others.

But I guess they now have a new "honest boy".

We're not exactly "pro-USA" but pro peace/pro prosperity. A lot of us aren't particularly fond of the US, while a lot on the other hand are. If you look at survey polls where Bangladeshi people were asked to rate the influence of other countries, most would rate likes of Pakistan/India/China, and also the US as favourable. People here aren't generally hating towards others, unless provoked of course.

As for Trump, we all know he's ignorant on most political issues, and he's playing the "anti-Muslim" card to just get the US right wing/rednecks to keep supporting him. Even Arab Sheikhs know this, and they're ok with Trump. Personally, I'm not a "fan" of Trump, but then again I'm not a fan of any US President. To me, Trump represents more of a comedian, than an anti-Muslim figure. Besides, most Bangladeshis don't think through the lense of identity politics unlike in Pakistan/India (Hindus for Trump and shit lelz).

@Nilgiri, note that whatever the Indians think about their exclusive role in the Indian Ocean, the US leadership is thinking of making BD at the pivotal position on the security of Indo-Pacific. The article that came out in a Bd newspaper was first published in "National Interest" of the USA. Do not you think that to the USA Indo-Pacific ends at the south of BoB that may not include India at all. India will be left alone to confront Pakistan Navy in its west. So, what is your opinion? Do you agree with me?

What did they do to Bangladesh so far?

1) Force almost a million people into our borders through repeated torture/attrocites.
2) Regularly detain our fishermen, who fish in our own territories.
3) Attack our border guards, and have even occasionally detained them, while subsequently torturing them in captivity.
4) Recent violations of our airspace.
5) Plant landmines along the border on the no man's land.
6) Call innocent Rohingya men and women, "Bengali terrorists", and insult Bangladesh regularly at official level.

Pakistan too received about 5 million refugees from Afghanistan. Such things are hard to stop due to humanitarian problems.

Why people are afraid of negative comments from other nationalities in a public forum? Participation by Ami, Tumi ar Shee is meaningless. It is necessary that people from different countries and backgrounds participate. BD people with a single language have ostrich mind, want to live within a shell without spreading the source of knowledge.

We don't mind America invading rouge mulsim countries like Taliban ruled Afghanistan or Saddam ruled Iraq. What do you expected from America after 9/11 when Afghan Taliban refused to handover Bin Laden and Al Qaeda terrorist? Sucking thumb and do nothing? What China would have done in same situation? Sending garland to Taliban? Saddam was a ruthless dictator invaded Iran and Kuwait, massacred Kurdish civilian by tens of thousands, caused immense suffering to ordinary Iraqis, one time possessed chemical and biological weapons, there was no hope for Iraqi people to get rid of that 40 years old dictatorship, unless some other power usurp him.So what USA did, I can't blame. Most of the killing in Iraq happened due to deep sectarian feud there. Some individual American had done crime like Abu Gharib incidence, But American punished their own soldiers for that.Punishing it's own soldier for war crime is something which only enlightened democracies have demonstrated so far.

America has not invaded any normal, peaceful, democratic country till date. And I have confidence that they will not do that in future either. If they neutralize the threat of North Korea with minimal or no civilian casualty, then I will support American punishment for Kim Jong Un regime.I believe in collective responsibility to maintain world peace and humanitarian intervention which include stopping evil regime before it do much harm. And Western enlightened democracies are surely in a better position to do that intervention than other countries for now.

What you are basically saying here is,For democracy You support one country to invade another to "implement democracy" and "democracised" them.
That is what i have got from your words, please correct me if i have got it wrong.
