According to this guy, it was very hard to put a single pillar because of the riverbed which was not strong enough to bear the weight of the pillars ,so they had to dig deeper. Almost 40 stories deep.

Yes I reported this some years ago, when they were using the MENCK piling hammers. Those were custom made in Germany, brought here by AN-124 (Dhaka Airport) and then transported to site via road. They were unprecedented in size and strength. I posted the video in the economic development thread I think (sticky).

Padma Bridge was a massive engineering challenge for sure. I am sure they will have these features for Padma Bridge presented in studies in civil engineering magazines for years to come.

They kept the MENCK HAMMER and might use it to drive piles for the Independence tower, which will also need deep piles, but probably not as deep as the bridge footings for Padma Bridge.

On a similar note, the tunnel borer being used for the Karnaphuli River tunnel is probably one of the world's largest as well. I hope they can use it for the upcoming Metro line 1 project to bore the underground tunnels.

Do you think the self drive would work in bd at all?

Bangladesh had Google Earth GPS Map implemented way before anyone in the subcontinent, even India. The TESLA self-drive feature uses Google GPS.

But you have rickshaws and autos darting in and out of traffic. Maybe only the main thoroughfares, where these slow things are not present.

Honestly - I think you have a point though, too risky.

Bangladesh has mostly bad uneducated drivers on the roads (same in most of South Asia). We have to tackle that first.

Absolutely right. I hear the experts warned Hasina that Payra draft was too shallow and dredging it with the dredging contractor on ongoing basis was going to be too expensive in the long run. At least they finally cancelled it. They will only use the existing port for coal operations from now on I guess.

If Hasina wanted a deep seaport, she should have found out the place where the depth of the sea is more than 15m, built a port there, and connected it with a steel H-pile supported long bridge (about 15 km) initially that could have been replaced with a long permanent four or six-lane bridge over a few years.

But, she and her planners chose to dig a canal. Very stupid planning when it is for sure that it will be refilled with silty soil in no time.

The BD talented planners could have almost offset the refilling of the canal by hammering in sheet piles or H-piles along the two banks of the canal up to the port site. Instead, our talents chose only to do digging but no sheet piling.

Yep. Fun fact, burj khalifa piling are 40 stories deep (if I’m correct)

edit: fact check shows Burj khalifa 50m deep so 15 stories. The bridge has deeper piling. Damn

This is what is happening also to that new Teesta Project. Without the construction of a new barrage at the confluence with Jamuna. I just do not understand how Hasina Bibi will retain water in the Teesta? If no additional water is retained, why spend $1 billion on the beautification of the riverside?

She loves to do something that deceives our people.
