Conversion was not their motive... Conversion happened because of
1) Sufis.
2) Enemies defeated at battles.
3) To escape taxes like Jizya.
4) To get monetary benefit.

Aurangzeb tried conversions zealously but failed.

My view :-
They could have invested in education of the masses, that would have drove people closer to their system and thus closer to the Islam inevitably, also that would have made India a Japan like nation outside of Europe - No British, no colonisation but they were too stupid to do this.
