Awami League leader loses legs to landmine blast

The incident occurred when he went into the no man's land

A local Awami League leader lost both his legs in a landmine explosion in Chakdala area of Naikhongchhari upazila in Bandarban on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred when Badiul Alam, an organizational secretary for a Naikhongchari ward-level Awami League unit, for reasons yet to be ascertained, went into the no man’s land near pillar number 42 of the Bangladesh-Myanmar border around 11am.

Badiul was taken to Cox’s Bazaar Sadar Hospital for treatment, according to Chakdala police station Officer-in-Charge Alamgir Sheikh.

Finally burmese land mine setting along the border paying off.:)

On a serious note, how come burmese troops were able to put land mine on no man's land? What was BGB doing in that time?

Very Tragic. The issue would most likely be taken up with the Myanmar government. As a signatory of the Ottawa treaty, we have bans on landmines in our country, but the Myanmar government isn't a signatory, but this being in no-man's land should constitute a crime.

Myanmar Junta scum has one of the few militaries, along with North Korea and Syria, which has openly used anti-personnel mines in recent years, according to Amnesty. Despite an international treaty in 1997 which outlawed their use as agreed to in Ottawa. Bangladesh including most other civilized nations have signed that treaty.

Amnesty International said that based on interviews with witnesses and analysis by its own weapons experts, it believed there had been targeted use of landmines along a narrow stretch of the north-western border of Rakhine state that is a crossing point for fleeing Rohingya.

The reason these mines were planted is simple, to prevent re-infiltration of Rohingya back to their homes and villages in Rakhine.
