Blocking of DeshCalling indicates the true meaning of ‘Digital Bangladesh’


Dear All,

I recently received an email from a yahoo forum indicating an article linked to the DeshCalling blog operated by Barrister MBI Munshi. When I opened the link I saw a caption stating that the blog was blocked to viewers in Bangladesh. Visitors to the site apparently see only a white screen or a backdated version of the blog without recent posts being displayed. Since I am in London I could view the blog and tried to discover the reason for the Bangladesh government’s action. It seems that Barrister Munshi had published two articles (written anonymously) on the Pilkhana Massacre which revealed direct government complicity in the tragedy. The publication of these articles must have caused a great deal of consternation and annoyance in ruling circles hence the blocking procedure. I delved further into the archive of DeshCalling and read through several law related articles on the recently concluded Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case which presented in full the defense of one of the accused. There were also a number of articles written by Barrister Munshi that displayed a negative attitude to Indian foreign policy as applied to Bangladesh as well as other South Asian countries. One may argue that Barrister Munshi should have been more sensitive to the present government’s agenda and avoided such controversial subjects and thereby avoided the blocking. But when one reads about death threats against Mahmudur Rahman (Amar Desh), Nurul Kabir (New Age) and Shahidul Alam (DRIK) one gets the impression that something else is going on here. A relative of mine, residing in Bangladesh, sent me a message a few days ago expressing surprise that the newspapers and TV channels were not showing the large and violent protests in Dhaka over pay, loadshedding and extortionate practices of the AL or BCL. It should now be clear to all what this Digital Bangladesh charade is really all about. Its purpose is to control opinion and censor information that could prove embarrassing to the government. Everyone should be aware of this pernicious trend and what it means for the future of Bangladesh. Digital Bangladesh is merely a cover for government oppression and the shutting down of oppositional viewpoints. DeshCalling could be the first of many blockings that will result in the narrowing down of opinion creating a climate of fear and distrust that is essential for the government’s own survival.

Death Threat to Bangladeshi Journalist Shahidul Alam

DHAKA: Just days after a photography show at the Drik Picture Library in Dhaka was shuttered by police the gallery’s managing director, Shahidul Alam, has received a death threat from a still unidentified man.

An exhibition of Alam’s photographs at the gallery was closed by government order on March 22nd. A man burst into the shuttered gallery on March 27th demanding to know the photographer’s whereabouts. When a security guard asked the man his business he refused to give his name, saying only that Alam would meet his death in the street.

Earlier that same day the gallery had filed a writ against the Bangladeshi government challenging its right to close the show. The exhibition, called Crossfire, displays photos Alam has made depicting the likely execution places of individuals killed by the RAB, the covert Bangladeshi force formed to combat violent crime which has been accused by some human-rights groups of murdering more than 1,000 people since its creation six years ago.

Of concern to press-freedom advocates in the region is that the action against on the gallery and the threat on Alam’s life occurred only weeks after a violent threat made against Nurul Kabir, editor of New Age. Both Kabir and Alam have been consistent critics of the government and its allies in Bangladesh.

Alam is taking the threat seriously. In 1996, unknown assailants stabbed him on the street during a period of crackdown against anti-government activists. Brian Palmer, an OPC member and a friend of Alam’s recalls that in an interview with Alam in 2008, Alam said, “at the time many human-rights groups were afraid to take a stand publicly, so the seat of resistance became the gallery. I was stopped in the street and eight knives were put into me.”

Juba League men snatch tender docs in Rajshahi

Activists of the ruling Awami League’s youth front, Juba League on Tuesday snatched the tender document of a contractor who wanted to bid for a road construction project in Rajshahi.

Local sources said the contractor, Hafizur Rahman, went to the office of Local Government Engineering Department in Rajshahi city to drop the tender schedule worth Tk 4.32 lakh, a component of a Tk-4.32-crore road project.

More than a dozen activists of local Juba League chased the contractor and took way his tender documents

The Jubo League activists also kept ‘surveillance’ on the LGED office so that that none could drop the tender schedule on the last day [Tuesday], added the sources.

Some other contractors were learnt to have returned failing to drop their schedules. However, none of them talked to the press or disclose the identity of any of the Juba League men involved in the tender manipulation process.

‘I know the men who snatched the schedule are doing politics of Juba League, but I cannot name them exactly,’ said a witness who too declined to name himself.

The police later went to the spot but could not take any action in this connection.

‘We went to the compound of the LGED office but nothing was found,’ said Afzal Hossain, officer-in-charge at the Rajpara police station, adding that no formal complaint was lodged with the police.

BCL men ransack Kushtia College office

A group of activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Tuesday ransacked the office of Kushtia Government College, demanding that a leader of the ruling party-backed student body be freed on bail.

Witnesses said the BCL men also confined the principal of the college in his office room as they asked him to recommend release of the student leader, Abu Taib Badsha.

Badsha, president of BCL sadar upazila unit, was arrested with firearms a few days ago following an intra-party clash over ‘illegal’ admission at the college.

College sources said the BCL activists on Tuesday noon asked the principal to arrange freedom of Badsha. When the principal expressed his inability, they got furious and started ransacking the office.
The police later went to the campus and brought the situation under control.

Friday Awami League cadre looted cash, valuables and vandalised furniture before torching some selected shops at Mahbub market in Kamrangirchar in Dhaka.


A group of miscreants on Friday set fire to eight plastic factories and 10 shops after looting in broad daylight in Ashrafabad area in Kamrangirchar. They also looted and ransacked 25 other shops in the area. At least 30 people were injured while trying to resist the attack.

Witnesses said a group of 50 men, mostly belonging to the ruling party, launched an assault in the area around 10:15am. The attackers allegedly looted cash, valuables and vandalised furniture before torching some selected shops.

One of the injured, Md Sohel, told The Daily Star that he and his two colleagues the attackers beat them up as they tried to save their shop (Selim Steel).

A female plastic factory worker, who was also injured in the attack, said she recognised some of the attackers who belonged to a gang led by Shaon of Nurbag area. She also alleged that Shaon was known as the right-hand man of State Minister for Law Qamrul Islam.

Locals alleged that there were a police van and a RAB vehicle standing near the scene at the time of the incident. But they did nothing to stop the assault. State Minister Qamrul Islam visited the scene in the afternoon. But he had to face the area in the face of wrath of the victim shop and factory owners and employees.

BCL cadres beat up rider, sieze bike

Dhaka, Apr 05 (bdnews24.com) — BCL activists of Dhaka University's SM Hall seized a motorbike and beat up its rider on Fuller Road on Monday noon.

Activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the ruling Awami League, accused that Ruhul Aziz was being reckless because a BCL activist was slightly hurt in the leg and Aziz was about to park his bike.

This caused a group of BCL activists belonging to SM Hall general secretary's faction to beat up Aziz.

They also snatched his mobile phone.

A teacher of the university who saw the incident rescued Aziz and took him to DU medical centre where Aziz was given first aid.

SM Hall's BCL general secretary, Anwar Hossain, told bdnews24.com that it was because a reckless rider had injured Farhad Hossain that his friends detained Aziz.

He claimed that the accident had broken Farhad's leg.

Anwar said that the motorbike was in the SM Hall garage and would be returned if contacted through the university authorities.

When Aziz and his guardians went to the Shahbagh Police Station to file a case, the police refused to register their complaint.

But sub-inspector Nasim denied the allegation.

He said that he had asked Aziz and his parents to come later in the evening.

"We will register the case as soon as they come in the evening."

Women harassed at DU concert

Dhaka, Apr 14 (bdnews24.com)—At least 15 women were assaulted during a Pahela Baishakh concert on Dhaka University campus Wednesday evening.

The police came to their aid as the women were reportedly harassed at and around the concert that had drawn a large crowd around the Raju Bhashkorjo to celebrate the Bengali New Year.

Although the concert was set to end at 9pm, it was called off an hour early upon a request from the police, apparently because the situation was getting out of hand after dark.

Krishnapada Roy, deputy commissioner of Ramna zone, told bdnews24.com that since there were no complaints, the police had not arrested anyone.

"The police went to the spot upon hearing of harassment of women and made them go home."

Witnesses said unruly youths harassed women at the concert which drew unexpectedly high number of spectators.

ADC Nurul Islam of Ramna zone told reporters that the police helped the women get away after complaints of physical assault.

Muktaban Shahitya Shangskritik Sangsad organised the concert.

President of Bangladesh Chhatra League's Jasimuddin Hall unit, Abdur Rahman Jibon, is also the president of the Sangsad.

"We stopped the programme as soon as the police asked us to," he told the bdnews24.com university correspondent.

Earlier on Feb 21, some activists of the Chhatra League, the ruling Awami League's student wing, assaulted a woman on campus and severely beat up five of her friends who were accompanying her.

bdnews24.com reported on Feb 21 that this female student had triggered the 'ire' of Jibon's cadres from Jasimuddin Hall when she refused to speak to them as they blocked her way.

One of the Chhatra League activists identified as Shetu, of Jasimuddin Hall, by a witness, first approached the woman and began harassing her.

They beat up her male companions when they protested.

BCL cadres remain on campus despite suspension

Dhaka, Apr 15 (bdnews24.com) —Five suspended Chhatra League activists of Dhaka University are still staying in the residential halls and enjoying their facilities.

The five cadres of BCL, the student wing of the ruling Awami League are accused of harassing a woman and beating up five of her friends on campus.

Allegations have it that the administration is also soft towards them because of their political allegiance.

Moreover, two of them were given executive positions in the newly formed hall unit of BCL.

The vice chancellor said he would ask the hall authorities for not implementing the punishment.

On Feb 21, some activists of the Chhatra League, assaulted a woman on campus and severely beat up her friends who were accompanying her.

The suspended students are—Ashiqul Islam Shetu (First year, Marketing, Jasim Uddin Hall), Apel Mahmud Biplob (First year, Islamic Studies Muhsin Hall), Shams-e-Noman (First year, Social Welfare, Zahurul Huq Hall), Morshedul Islam (First year, Sociology, Zahurul Huq Hall) and Akramul Huq Nitol (Second year, Public administration, Muhsin Hall).

Of the five, Nitol was made the assistant secretary of BCL's Muhsin Hall unit, while Apel is a member of the committee formed on Mar 24.

Shetu is known as an active hand of the Jasimuddin Hall unit president Abdur Rahman Jibon. He lives in room 316 of the residence.

Shams stays at room 4009 of Zahurul Haq Hall.

When asked, university proctor KM Saiful Islam said the letters of suspension were sent to the hall authorities long ago.

"According to the law, the suspended students can't take any advantage from the university. They can't even stay at the halls."

"But it's the duty of the hall authorities to ensure that," Saiful told bdnews24.com.

Zahurul Haq Hall provost Zahidul Islam denied receiving any letter from the proctor's office.

"I don't know if someone from my hall is involved in any such thing," he said talking to bdnews24.com.

Jasim Uddin Hall provost Akhtaruzzaman told bdnews24.com, "I can't go and check personally if a suspended student stays in the hall."

"But, we'll take steps if such students are in fact, staying here," he added.

Ali Akkas, provost of Muhsin Hall, could not confirm anything.

"I don't even know if the proctor's office issued any letter," he told bdnews24.com.

Vice-chancellor of the university, AAMS Arefin Siddique, said those who were party to the woman's harassment would get exemplary punishment.

He told bdnews24.com, "I'll have the directives implemented immediately after consulting with the hall provosts."

Chittagong University unit of Chhatra League activists on Tuesday damaged at least six vehicles and set a teachers’ bus ablaze to protest the death of a second year accounts department student in the hands of the villagers. They also detained at Chittagong Railway Station all the trains that shuttle between the campus and the port city to ferry students. Violence erupted on the campus and in the port city after the death of marketing student Asaduzzman on Friday, a day after he was stabbed by villagers.

The university could take no classes or examinations on the day as the ruling party backed Bangladesh Chhatra League enforced an indefinite strike to press their demands for the for the arrest of Asad’s killers and the resignation of the vice chancellor, the proctor and the students’ adviser of the university for their alleged failure to ensure security to students. The death prompted the university authorities to suspend academic activities for three days to cool down the campus atmosphere.

BCL called the indefinite strike at the end of three days of suspension of academic activities. The BCL campus unit general secretary, Mohammed Ershad Hossain, told New Age that the strike will continue until the authorities meet their demands.

The university authorities, following an emergency meeting chaired by the vice chancellor on Friday night, appointed a four-member probe committee, headed by Mohammad Al-Amin, teacher of the Forestry and Environmental Science Institute. The committee has been asked to submit its report in 15 days, sources said. At Sholashar in the port city in the morning, angry Chhatra League activists set ablaze a university bus, which ferries teachers between the campus and the port city.

They also damaged five or six vehicles in the city as well as on the road close to the university campus.They detained at Chittagong Railway Station the shuttle trains, which ferry students between the port city and the campus, to press home their five demands including resignation of the vice-chancellor and the proctor for their alleged failure to ensure security to the students.

M Asaduzzaman, stabbed Thursday night by a group of neighbouring villagers after an altercation during Pahela Baishakh celebrations on the previous night, died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital Saturday afternoon.Asauzzman, the eldest of five children of Tajul Islam Khan, a resident of Pangsha in Rajbari, became the third casualty of violence by villagers in little over two months.

Asad’s death, which followed tightening of security around the campus, with extra deployment of law enforcement personnel, to ward of the possibility of violence after two other students died recently in the hands villagers, came as a shocker. Police said, agitated Chhatra League activists set ablaze university bus, when it reached Sholoshahar at about 7 AM to take the teachers to the campus.The activists fled the scene immediately and no casualties were reported.

Later, police picked up five students from Sholoshahar, accusing them of setting the teachers’ bus ablaze, police said. On Saturday, the BCL activists had set ablaze another bus, plying between the city and the campus.

Mohammed Nezam Uddin, assistant station master of Sholoshahar railway station told New Age that no shuttle train or minibus bound for university could run due to the strike called by Chhatra League.
The probe committee has started its investigation to find the facts on Asad’s killing, said the assistant proctor and member secretary of the committee, Ali Haider.

Tension gripped the campus following his death on Friday. Three cases were filed with the Hathazari police in connection with the killing, the police said.

On February 11, AFM Mohiuddin, a student of the political science department, was hacked to death at the Sholashahar railway station, when he was on his way back home and on March 28 marketing student Harun-ar-Rashid Kaiser was found lying on the ground at Baradighirpar, close to the campus, with his throat slit.
