In Dongchang traditional market in Pudong, Shanghai, Australia's Consul in Shanghai Brent Moore was introducing the Greatness of Aussie beef. It is a new trend in China that ambassadors from different countries try their best to promote their agricultural products to 1.3 billion consumers.

China has just lifted a decade of ban on beef from US. It will be a critical time for Aussie beef. Brazilian beef has already posed serious threat to Aussie beef!

Why China is open to beef imports, because we have less demand for beef

Until now, it is banned.
In 2015, according to the beef market report in China, India had 30% cattle, but beef production only 7.19%.

It's ok adults in China do not drink milk.

India retains its top spot as the world’s largest exporter of beef, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and has extended its lead over the next highest exporter, Brazil. It must be noted, however, that the U.S. government classifies even buffalo meat as beef.

According to the data, India exported 2.4 million tonnes of beef and veal in FY2015, compared to 2 million tonnes by Brazil and 1.5 million by Australia. These three countries account for 58.7 per cent of all the beef exports in the world. India itself accounts for 23.5 per cent of global beef exports. This is up from a 20.8 per cent share last year.

In China Beef Trade, U.S. Gain May Mean Australia Pain
U.S. return to market spells trouble for Australia, already overtaken by Brazil as China’s No. 1 beef supplier

U.S. beef producers will be hailing promises of renewed access to the China market, but for Australian exporters already having a tough time it will add to the headwind.

Speaking to U.S. business groups in New York on Tuesday night, Premier Li Keqiang said China would soon allow imports of U.S. beef, mostly banned since 2003 over concerns about bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or “mad cow” disease.

Being locked out of China—consumer of around 13% of the world’s beef—is estimated to cost U.S. producers more than $100 per head of cattle, according to Michael Underhill, chief investment officer at Wisconsin-based Capital Innovations, which has nearly $1 billion of assets under management.

China will import 825,000 metric tons of beef this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast in April. That is 24% more than in 2015 and up from just 11,000 tons back in 2002, when the U.S. accounted for 70% of the total.

“The whole export market has really taken off,” said Angus Gidley-Baird, senior analyst of animal proteins at Rabobank. That has created significant opportunities for producers—these days predominantly from Australia and Brazil.

Any U.S. gain is likely to come at the expense of Australia’s market share, despite Australia’s advantage of a free-trade agreement with China. Already its exports to China are down 35% this year, as a shortage of animals available for slaughter—after a long drought ended, allowing farmers to restock their herds—sent prices to record highs. Brazil has overtaken Australia as China’s top supplier.

“Australia has already found itself increasing getting priced out of that market, and competition is getting quite intense with South America,” said Phin Ziebell, ‎senior analyst and agribusiness economist at National Australia Bank. “Adding the U.S. to that is probably not great for Australia suppliers.”

The impact on Brazil of the U.S. return is likely to be smaller, given that it undercuts both the U.S. and Australia in price.

“The U.S. will win for the high-end market and compete with Australia at the higher end—but Brazil will dominate the [low-end] commodity market,” Adrian Redlich, chief investment officer at Merricks Capital, a Melbourne-based firm that runs a $350 million soft-commodities fund.

Maybe because indians themselves consume very little.
Total beef production is not high in india, less than 10%, smaller than China's 13%.
Consumption is 4% in India.
