An assistant commandant of the RPF was killed and three others were injured in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills district early on Sunday, following which the accused was arrested, the police said.

“The Culprit was arrested and his service rifle seized. Investigation into the incident is underway,” Superintendent of Police H G Lyngdoh said.

Assistant Commandant Mukesh Tyagi was shot dead at the Railway Protection Force (RPF) camp in Mawkyrwat town of the district bordering Bangladesh, Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer F R Kharkongor told PTI.

In the ensuing scuffle, another constable, Joginder Kumar, received bullet injury on his arm and was sent for treatment to the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Science here, he said.

Inspector Pradeep Meena and Sub-Inspector Om Prakash Yadav also suffered minor injuries, the CEO said.

Suspected militants shot dead two policemen, one of them the guard of Hurriyat leader Fazul Haq Qureshi, in Kashmir on Sunday. Their service weapons were also snatched.

A police official said Farooq Ahmad was “grievously injured” when unknown gunmen fired upon him “as he was performing the duties of guarding Qureshi” in Bilal Colony at Soura of Srinagar on Sunday evening.

“The injured policeman was shifted in a critical condition to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” said a police official.

Earlier, a policeman guarding the Chrar-e-Sharief shrine in Budgam was fired upon by militants. Constable Kultair Singh, who is from Samba, died in hospital.

Senior cadres of the Maoist party were rumoured to be among those killed.

About 12 Maoists and a Greyhound police constable were reported dead in an exchange of fire in the early hours of Friday in the Tadapalagutta and Pujari Kanker forest areas bordering Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

Deceased constable Sushil belonging to Vikarabad of Telangana district. Two other policemen were also stated to be injured.

Appropriate retaliation to these ceasefire violations have been carried out from time to time wherever necessary. During ceasefire violations, the inhabitants of border villages, which are vulnerable to shelling/firing, are shifted to safer locations to prevent any loss of life. All arrangements are made by the District administration for free boarding, lodging, medicare, water, electricity, food, sanitation and transport to safer places in such cases.

The defences along the border are adequately fortified to withstand enemy fire. Continuous improvements, including the usage of modern technology, in the defences are made to make them more robust and resilient to enemy fire.

B. Sushil Kumar, a commando attached to the anti-Naxal force of Greyhounds of Telangana who was killed in an encounter with Maoists on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border on Friday, was laid to rest here with full state honours on Saturday. The funeral was attended by thousands of people.

The last rites were performed according to Christian rituals at the burial ground in front of St. Paul Methodist Church at his native place of Mangalpete in Bidar district. The funeral was performed in the presence of representatives from Telangana police and Karnataka police. Before the funeral, the body was kept outside Sushil Kumar’s residence for the public to pay their respects.

He is survived by his mother, father, wife, and three-year old daughter. His father Vijay Bopanahalli and mother Sharada, a native of Zaheerabad in Telangana, are residents of Bidar.

Sushil Kumar joined the Andhra Pradesh police force in 2004 as a constable. He was deputed to Greyhounds, an elite anti-Naxal force, for the past six years.

Telangana Director-General of Police (In-charge) M. Mahendar Reddy and Inspector-General of Police (Intelligence) Naveen Chand attended the funeral. They also handed over a check for ₹3 lakh to the slain commando’s family, on behalf of the Telangana government for funeral expenses. They are also said to have promised a compensation of ₹60 lakh and a government job for Sushil Kumar’s wife.

Bidar Lok Sabha member Bhagwanth Khuba, Deputy Commissioner H.R. Mahadeva, Superintendents of Police Devaraju D. (Bidar) and Chandrashekar Reddy (Sangareddy, Telangana), and zilla panchayat chief executive officer R. Selvamani were among those who participated in the funeral.

Sonepat: “Society cannot forget the supreme sacrifices made by the soldiers for the unity and integrity of the nation during peace and war times,” said BJP’s state media in charge, Rajiv Jain, while paying tributes to Capt Deepak Sharma at Bidhlan village in Sonepat on Sunday. Jain said Capt Deepak sacrificed his life on this day in 2010 while fighting against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. He was awarded with Kirti Chakra by the Union Government in recognition to his supreme sacrifice. Despite being seriously injured, Capt Deepak continued to lead his soldiers against the terrorists and eliminated three terrorists before breathing his last.The occasion was marked by unveiling his statue in the village and also organising a kabaddi competition.

Two BSF personnel, including an assistant commandant, were killed after an IED explosion following which an exchange of fire broke out between security personnel and Maoists in district on Wednesday. Senior police officials said assistant commandant Gajendra Singh and constable Amresh Kumar were leading one column of armymen that came under attack, and suffered splinter injuries after a series of IED explosions.

Superintendent of Police, district, told the Indian Express that a team of BSF and the Chhattisgarh Police had launched an operation on March 6. “This was a team of the 134 battalion, and close to 250 to 300 personnel, including the Police, were involved in the operation. Around 4 pm, near the village in the police station limits, there were IED blasts and then an exchange of fire that lasted well over an hour,” he said.



Senior BSF officials said eight separate teams had launched an operation for three days to flush out Maoists in the general area of the reserve forest, on the border between Inter State Border districts. On March 6, BSF officials said parties had spotted Maoists who fled, leaving behind a radio set, flexible electric wire and steel containers. “On the 7th, a series of IED blasts took place and heavy fire was opened by the Maoists. The parties took position and retaliated effectively. But the party commander Gajendra Singh and constable Amresh who were in the leading column sustained splinter injuries from the blast. They were given medical aid but succumbed to their wounds. The exchange of fire lasted two hours,” a BSF official said.


Senior police officers said that given the ferocity of the firing, it was probable that the Maoists had also suffered casualties but no bodies were recovered, and that searching operations were still on. While Gajendra Singh is from Haryana, Constable Amresh Kumar is from Bihar, SP KL Dhruv said.

Sepoy Amarshir Singh (30), who died during a terrorist attack in Assam on March 5, was cremated with state and military honours at his native Jorki Andhewali village here today.

A pall of gloom descended on the village when the martyr’s body reached here. His nephews lit the pyre as his two daughters - Gurnoor Kaur (4) and three-month-old Gurbir Kaur - were not in a position to do so. His body was draped in the national flag.

A contingent of Army jawans gave a gun salute to him in the presence of senior Army officials, Fazilka SDM Balbir Raj Singh and former Congress MLA Dr Mohinder Kumar Rinwa. SAD (rural) district president Gurpal Singh Grewal and All India Youth Congress Committee secretary Goldy Kamboj were also present.

Amarshir had joined the Army on March 7, 2008.

Wife Veerpal Kaur said she was proud of her husband and would tell the stories of his bravery to their daughters.

Amarshir’s father Sukhmander Singh, a shepherd, demanded a government job for the martyr’s wife as he was the only breadwinner of the family.

The mortal remains of Gajendra Singh, Assistant Commandant, Border Security Forces (BSF), were consigned to flames at his native Kharak village in Bhiwani district today with full state honours.

The Assistant Commandant was killed in an encounter with Naxalites in Chhattisgarh on March 7. He is survived by his wife, twin daughters and parents.

Son of ex-serviceman Motiram, Singh joined the Border Security Forces as Sub-Inspector in 1996.

Large numbers of local residents besides, BJP MLA Bishember Balmiki and Bhiwani SDM Satish Kumar paid tributes to the martyred.
