Assam rebels 'arrested in Dhaka'
By Subir Bhaumik
BBC News, Calcutta

A separatist group in India's troubled north-east says that Bangladeshi police have arrested two of their top leaders.

The United Liberation Front of Assam (Ulfa) said armed men in civilian dress entered their safe house in Dhaka and took away the two men at gunpoint.

Dhaka has arrested Ulfa leaders in the past. Separatist commander Anup Chetia served almost 12 years in jail there.

The group was founded on 7 April 1979. The rebels are fighting for a separate homeland for the Assamese people.

There has been no comment from the Bangladeshi authorities as yet.

Safety plea

Chitrabon Hazarika and Sasha Chaoudhary were taken from a house in Dhaka just past midnight on 2 November, senior Ulfa leader Raju Barua said in an e-mailed statement.

Mr Barua said the two leaders were told they were being taken for questioning.

He appealed to Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to ensure their safety.

"We are living in Bangladesh as law-abiding citizens, so why should we be harmed in their country," Mr Barua said in the statement.

Ever since the Awami League party came to power in Bangladesh in January, the Ulfa and other north-eastern rebel groups have been under pressure to leave the country or face action.

Some rebels have been arrested and sent back to India on charges of illegal entry into Bangladesh, while others have been held for questioning to secure information on rebel hideouts.

Before that you should choose your own flag instead of choosing ours.

We want peace in Bangladesh and dont want to get involved in any conflict in this region. ULFA should be warned and given enough time to leave our teritorry find some other safer place. May be Pakistan or Myanmar.

I always used to wonder about the types that throng the street, with the placards, protesting against rights violation, protesting against US policies... you know , the liberals kind .. the nationalist's..the kind who encourage their children to read, treat all human's as equal, about dinosaur's.... Life - Beautiful but Brief.

Written Words, as they say, speak volume about its Author.

Anybody can find good, bad or ugly in every word we write. Regarding ULFA, they have sympathizer too inside and outside India and they have their own reasons for doing so. BD could not extradite Anup Chetia neither it could release him. You might wonder why.

Iaj : After 9/11 , World changed. Tolerance level changed. Countries, irrespective of difference's, co-operate against terrorism. Mind you, im not talking about thugs/criminal's/war lord's. By giving them warning, you aid them, in further killing innocent civilian's. By giving them time, you strengthen them. You motivate them. Is that what you want for us?

There are quite a number of separatist moments in India; however, they portray as if nothing wrong in their nation. India should mind their own homeland terrorism rather than poking their nose in Pakistan's affairs.

.
About what ? India did not create LTTE India aided SL to decimate them.
Hope they can find who shelters terrorists of Lahore attacks.

.
Sri Lankans can question you the same

Jana, either your books are old or you want to disseminate lie's. LTTE did start with India's active help (in every which way). No questions about it. But we did a volteface post R Gandhi's assassination. Just Google on this. LTTE was and remains a banned organization in INDIA.

Well, may be you are generalizing things too much. The dillema we face here in BD regarding ULFA is same as India faces against Mao rebel. Most Bangladeshi dont want to accept that ULFA a terorrist group rather they sympathized with them. Also civil societies in Assam sympathized with them too.
You could look at the Chakma problem we faced in 80's and how we reached out to them. Once, who we called them as terorrist are now celebrity in Bangladesh. You will find them in talk show in every other day in the TV.

Those were the economic trying time in south asia. Grivences were high among different ethnic group as the resources were limited. But things has changed and there are new opportunities are in making every day in every corner of this region. What we need here now is to integrate the marginalized to the main stream. Arms solution should be the last resort we should seek.

I am writing from my laptop watching Tara Newz (Indian bengali news channel). The news reader is sitting in front of Sheik Mujibs picture. An hour ago it was the monument of 52's language movement in Dhaka. Again it is a Indian bengali TV channel. This is the first time I am watching this channel and I am impressed.
