Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal calls on Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari at the latter's office in New Delhi on Tuesday.




Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday urged Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to start the construction work of the bridge connecting Jorhat and Majuli.

Union Minister Gadkari directed the senior officials of his department to take necessary steps in this regard.

The foundation stone of the proposed bridge connecting Jorhat and Majuli districts has already been laid.

Assam Chief Minister Sonowal made the request to Gadkari on Tuesday as he called on Union Minister at the latter’s office in New Delhi.

They had extensive discussions on the issues of road and bridge construction in the State and their maintenance.

In Tuesday’s meeting, discussions were also held on the construction of Gohpur-Numaligarh bridge.

The land acquisition issue pertaining to the Dhubri-Phulbari connecting bridge also came up for discussion.

During the meeting, Sonowal urged Gadkari to expedite the repair works of the highways in the State.

Sonowal requested the Union Minister to send a senior officer of Road Transport Ministry to Assam to study issues related to condition of the roads in the State.

The Union Minister assured of taking immediate steps to resolve the problems pertaining to road and bridge construction in Assam.

Union Minister for Food Processing Rameswar Teli and senior officials of Road Transport Ministry were also present in Tuesday’s meeting.

The Chief Minister, through a statement, informed that both the Central and the State governments were jointly taking steps to develop the road and transport system of the State.

The meeting held with Union Road Transport Minister was a step in the right direction, he said.

Bhramaputra and Jamuna is not same...
There are several bridges over Bhramaputra.. Even though the names look same they are not same river. Jamuna river carry the water of Teesata + Bhramaputra + Jamuna. Then it met with Padma (which carries the water of Ganga) and we are building bridge over it which carries Teesata + Bhramaputra + Jamuna + Ganga water. We had several bridges over Padma before it met Jamuna but none of them are named as Padma bridge. Building a bridge in Assam and building a bridge in Bangladesh not same. 100s of river actually merge with 3 major rivers which carry them over to Bay of Bengal. They are deep and unpredictable.

Now my question to you folks is why have you been unable to build infrastructure over Jamuna/Brahmaputra when our supposedly poor NE has built many bridges on the same river and planning for many more in the coming years.

Look at your country beyond Dhuburi in Assam to Tangail in your country, there are not infrastructure built, no cities and towns along the banks of the river like we have in Assam, and the people live in abject poverty. No wonder then that they cross over.

We there are certainly some like Jamalpur, Sirajganj, Faridpur and many more on the bank or within few kilometers along the river. But being Jamuna a new river in BD part, no historic river faring cities were built like Dhaka or Rajshahi.

A long, because there are no means of communication over the upper reaches of Jamuna, when in fact it should have been a journey along a straight line. A person travelling Rangpur to Maymensing not warrant a 4 billion dollar bridge as the return of investment is too little to pass a feasibility study. Rangpur people travel to Dhaka not Maymensing. They can always get down in Tangail and go to Maymensingh.. whats the problem. I said a bridge in Jamuna in Bangladesh is not same a bridge in Assam where the cost is within 1000 crore. Here it is 40 to 50 thousand crore.
