Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal calls on Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari at the latter's office in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday urged Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to start the construction work of the bridge connecting Jorhat and Majuli.

Union Minister Gadkari directed the senior officials of his department to take necessary steps in this regard.

The foundation stone of the proposed bridge connecting Jorhat and Majuli districts has already been laid.

Assam Chief Minister Sonowal made the request to Gadkari on Tuesday as he called on Union Minister at the latter’s office in New Delhi.

They had extensive discussions on the issues of road and bridge construction in the State and their maintenance.

In Tuesday’s meeting, discussions were also held on the construction of Gohpur-Numaligarh bridge.

The land acquisition issue pertaining to the Dhubri-Phulbari connecting bridge also came up for discussion.

During the meeting, Sonowal urged Gadkari to expedite the repair works of the highways in the State.

Sonowal requested the Union Minister to send a senior officer of Road Transport Ministry to Assam to study issues related to condition of the roads in the State.

The Union Minister assured of taking immediate steps to resolve the problems pertaining to road and bridge construction in Assam.

Union Minister for Food Processing Rameswar Teli and senior officials of Road Transport Ministry were also present in Tuesday’s meeting.

The Chief Minister, through a statement, informed that both the Central and the State governments were jointly taking steps to develop the road and transport system of the State.

The meeting held with Union Road Transport Minister was a step in the right direction, he said.

The proposed bridge would be the seventh bridge over the mighty Brahmaputra, @bluesky. It seems like us poor and junglee NE is far ahead of you mighty Bongals from BD in terms of infrastructure, considering you only have a single one built across the whole extent of Jamuna. Where does your GDP money go?

Bhramaputra and Jamuna is not same...
There are several bridges over Bhramaputra.. Even though the names look same they are not same river. Jamuna river carry the water of Teesata + Bhramaputra + Jamuna. Then it met with Padma (which carries the water of Ganga) and we are building bridge over it which carries Teesata + Bhramaputra + Jamuna + Ganga water. We had several bridges over Padma before it met Jamuna but none of them are named as Padma bridge. Building a bridge in Assam and building a bridge in Bangladesh not same. 100s of river actually merge with 3 major rivers which carry them over to Bay of Bengal. They are deep and unpredictable.

I certainly don't need geography lessons over our lifeline Brahmaputra. Jamuna is the continuation of the Brahmaputra in Bangladesh, and Teesta is just the western most tributary to it. Now my question to you folks is why have you been unable to build infrastructure over Jamuna/Brahmaputra when our supposedly poor NE has built many bridges on the same river and planning for many more in the coming years.

Mind you, i am referring to the stretch of the river that flows through the northern part of Bangladesh before its confluence with the Ganges/Padma.

Almost all of the tributaries of the Brahmaputra/Jamuna joins it in Assam, that is the reason why your country experiences floods only after it rains heavily in Arunachal, Meghalaya and Nagaland, apart from Assam.

Jamuna is not the continuation of Bhramaputra. Jamuna is jamuna.. Bhramaputra known as Old Bhramaputra met Megna in Bhairab.

I dont know what you trying to prove here.

Old Brahmaputra has nothing to do with the main channel of the Brahmaputra, the name old should give you an idea. Ever since the earthquake the channel has shifted course to the present day Jamuna, old Brahmaputra is just an insignificant distributary of the Jamuna now.

Even if we were to buy your ridiculous argument, it would mean building bridges over Jamuna even more easier, as some water of Jamuna is being diverted via the old channel.

so you are learning..
Old bhramaputra and Jamuna is completely different river despite it carries part of the water of Bhramaputra. Being the channels is new means not millions of years old, it is very prone to change course. The reason the river training requires more money than to build the actual bridge.
We are thinking of building tunnel instead of 2nd Jamuna bridge.

You are deflecting the issue here, the river corresponding to the vertical red line in the map i shared is the continuation of Brahmaputra in Assam and is known as Jamuna in Bangladesh. Right upto its point of confluence with the Padma, there are virtually no infrastructure over the river. Old Brahmaputra is irrelevant here.

And where the fck Jamuna bridge is you think?
YOu said whether there were bridge on Bhramaputra .. yes there are. Whether there are bridge on Jamuna? yes there are ... Now why old bhramaputra is irrelevant? that is still there and kicking and as big as bhramaputra is.

You missed reading my second post, the Jamuna bridge is at the lowest reach of the river. There are almost no cities/towns over the rest of the river, nor are there any other bridges. What is that you are fearful of, why are you not improving the lives of the people living along the banks of the Brahmaputra/Jamuna. Is it because you are incapable of taking such mega ventures and want them to cross over to Assam like they always did..

WTF you talking about? Jamuna bridge is on the national highway. You want us to build 4 billion dollar bridge for every neighborhood along the river? Sorry brother we dont work that way. We know our priority.
And nobody crossed over to Assam except your hindu brethren. NRC proved that. ;)

Nonsense, Jamuna traverses the entire length of your country with only a solitary bridge, and no means of communication between both banks upwards of it. Look at your country beyond Dhuburi in Assam to Tangail in your country, there are not infrastructure built, no cities and towns along the banks of the river like we have in Assam, and the people live in abject poverty. No wonder then that they cross over.

What are you talking about? You mean we should build town along the river bank? We there are certainly some like Jamalpur, Sirajganj, Faridpur and many more on the bank or within few kilometers along the river. But being Jamuna a new river in BD part, no historic river faring cities were built like Dhaka or Rajshahi.

You are circumventing the topic, let me explain to you in a way you will better understand. How long does it take for a person in Rangpur to reach your town of Mymensingh. A long, because there are no means of communication over the upper reaches of Jamuna, when in fact it should have been a journey along a straight line. All your wealth is being usurped by those in Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong leaving nothing for the poor and needy ones.

A person travelling Rangpur to Maymensing not warrant a 4 billion dollar bridge as the return of investment is too little to pass a feasibility study. Rangpur people travel to Dhaka not Maymensing. They can always get down in Tangail and go to Maymensingh.. whats the problem. I said a bridge in Jamuna in Bangladesh is not same a bridge in Assam where the cost is within 1000 crore. Here it is 40 to 50 thousand crore.
