Pakistan had imported 2.7 million bales of cotton, about 40 per cent of India's total cotton exports in 2015-16.

Islamabad: Pakistan has suspended the import of cotton and other agriculture commodities, including vegetables, from India due to rising tensions between the two countries along the LoC, a media report here said.

Officials of Department of Plant Protection (DPP) said that import of agri items from India through the Wagah border crossing and Karachi port and issuing permits for future imports has been halted, the Dawn reported.

Cotton importers and customs clearing agents claimed that the department had stopped the import of agriculture commodities from India without a warning or written order because of increase in tensions across the LoC.

Imran Shami, chief of DPP which is a subordinate department of the national food security and research ministry, however sought to dispel the impression.

"We have stopped import of tomatoes and other fresh vegetables in order to protect our farmers. We have enough tomato and other vegetables stocks, which we import from India only in case of shortages in the domestic market," he said.

The reason behind the "suspension" of cotton imports from India was, nevertheless, different, he said.

"No. We have not stopped cotton imports from India. It has just been halted over reports that the Indian exporters are not meeting our bio-security conditions. We're looking into these reports and will lift restriction on cotton imports if our apprehensions are proved wrong," Shami said.

He said only those cotton consignments would be allowed to enter Pakistan through surface or sea routes where importers had already secured permits from his department and carried phyto-sanitary certificates.

"Our cotton consignments are not being allowed to enter Pakistan through Wagah and Karachi for reasons known to the ministry but cheaper, subsidised Indian yarn is being brought in without any let or hindrance. At least 11 trucks of Indian yarn entered Pakistan on Thursday when the department stopped cotton consignments from coming to this side of the border," a textile factory owner told Dawn.

He said the suspension of cotton import from India would create a huge problem for the textile exporters as the truncated domestic crop target of 11.25 million bales for this year appeared difficult if not impossible to meet.

"The industry requires 14 million bales. We will still be short by three million bales of cotton even if the crop target is achieved," he said.

He said cotton shortages after the ban on Indian imports would make domestic prices shoot up at the expense of exports.

Pakistan had imported 2.7 million bales of cotton (1 bale is 170 kgs) - about 40 per cent of India's total cotton exports in 2015-16 - due to crop failure that wiped off 0.5 per cent of GDP growth. The industry is expecting to import 2 million bales this year.

the country's non-fat dry milk (NFDM) export are revised down to 30,000 tonnes for 2015.

India, the world's largest milk producer, generally exports NFDM to milk-deficient countries including Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, the UAE, and Afghanistan.

The country also exports smaller volumes of casein, butter and other dairy products to neighbouring countries.

Thank you! Without you, we would have died of milk shortage, because we eat our cows, specially during Eid Al Adha.... Man!

Pakistan banning import of cotton will hurt its textile industry. $1 worth of raw material produces final product of over $20 . Many Pakistani Textile units have already shut shops or moved out to Bangladesh. Banning of import of raw materials will definitely hurt Pakistan much more than India.

Pakistan is a milk deficient country? Are you kidding ? Pakistan is one of the top milk producing countries, FYI.

Table from an Indian source.

Pakistan's milk production is far higher per capita then India. Look at the table given by @Emmie One of the world's largest milk plants is in Pakistan.

Maybe there is shortage of milk in Pakistan - because the consumer actually drinks unlike half the starved population in India.

half pounder beef burger
Mmmmmmm. Your making me hungry. A double decker of premium beef with slices of lettuce, red onions, tomatoe with slight dash of chilly sauce is in order.

Stupid move, we won't die but prices will rise even further so in Pak.

Good move! Pakistani farmers will get benefit. Indian government subsidizes it's farmers whereas Pakistan government doesn't. Because of cost difference it was nearly impossible for Pakistani farmers to compete Indian product (vegetables).

Ohh man! btw no cheese? I had a couple of slices of cheddar cheese. I like it when in the final minutes, they put cheese slices on the beef burgers while frying. It melts like in the picture below oooooo.. And then you ask them to put your favorite sauces...

The Government continues to engage proactively with SAARC countries, including Nepal, to strengthen trade and economic relations. Issues impacting bilateral trade, raised by these countries, are taken up for an early resolution. Bilateral and multilateral trade discussions are held with these countries from time to time to explore mechanisms for enhancement of cross border trade.

Issues relating to improvement of trade infrastructure in the form of upgradation of Land Customs Stations are also coordinated.

Further, assistance is provided under Market Access Initiative(MAI) and Market Development Assistance(MDA) schemes to Indian exporters, Export Promotion Councils, Apex Trade Bodies etc. for participation in events in foreign countries, including Nepal.

The share of India’s exports to the SAARC countries vis-a-vis India’s total exports has increased from 5.57% in 2013-14 to6.42% in 2016-17(April-August) and the share of India’s imports from the SAARC countries vis-a-vis India’s total imports has increased from 0.55% in 2013-14 to 0.73% in 2016-17 (April-August), thereby strengthening India’s gains from trade.

This information was given by the Commerce and Industry Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman in a written reply in Lok Sabha today

Start drinking milk guys.. Don't export it to us. We are on 47th position in per capita milk consumption, India is not even in top hundred milk consumers.

That's why I am saying, instead of exporting milk to us, just try to be kind to your own countrymen and Indian children. Don't export milk to us. We are already having enough milk.

WE ARE ON 47 POSITION IN THE WORLD. THE WAY WE LOVE MILK, WE CAN EASILY BECOME #1 AND YOU ARE HELPING US IN GETTING THE TOP POSITION....
