Forty years after the 1979 revolution, Islamism is exhausting itself as a legitimizing force for the Islamic Republic of Iran. Studies sponsored by the Iranian government show that resentment toward the state’s religious symbols is at an all-time high.

According to the research arm of the Iranian parliament, around 70 percent of Iranian women do not strictly follow the official diktats for wearing a veil. Anticlerical sentiments have turned violent. Regardless of their ties to the government, clerics are routinely attacked and stabbed in the streets by angry anti-regime individuals.

Iran is responding by cautiously downplaying Islamism and emphasizing nationalism and foreign threats to win over disgruntled citizens. Iran’s leaders acknowledged the societal shift away from Islamism by making unprecedented references to nationalism and showing their determination to incorporate patriotic sentiments into the state ideology during the 40th anniversary celebrations of the revolution in February.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has repeatedly appealed to Iranians to back the government, even if they do not endorse its Islamist ideology, for the sake of their country and for their own security.

Lol....

Another one of typical farce of NY Times.

Literally, no one ever uses the term "Islamism" in Muslim world or even knows what it really means.

"Iranians were Islamist, but now turning nationalist"......What?

So you think Iranians weren't "nationalist" in 1979? You think Iranians aren't "Islamist" in 2019?

Iranians overwhelmingly will choose 'Islamic Republic' over secular-liberal Republic even TODAY in a nationwide referendum. Anyone who has been to Iran and knows about it, knows this (Unless refrendum happens only in Northern Tehran ;) If you know, you know)

. .
Islamic republic

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_republic

An Islamic republic is the name given to several states that are officially ruled by Islamic laws, including the Islamic Republics of Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, and Mauritania. Pakistan first adopted the title under the constitution of 1956. Mauritania adopted it on 28 November 1958.
Did anyone ask you this question?
Now answer the question being asked
What is Islamism?

Now non Muslims will tell us about Islam. But some of us are already adopting the line of orientalist by studying Islam from their perspective and rejecting original sources.
This is just a propaganda shit flowing from the bottom of Christian-Jewish media.

. .
"The expansion of the Islamic way of life". For example, if you were a Christian and believe in being a Christian and try to expand that in your life and others, that would be called "Christainism"
That's simply Islam.. and who is the authority to define this term? Muslims are the ones who are responsible for defining how they call their religion and that is "Islam".

Yes, but that's what it means when people use it. Its not really a technical term, more colloquial

100% agree. We will not let anyone define us.

Also the idea that Iran wasn't nationalist is laughable. I've never known a more nationalist or ethnic focused people. They're all Persians before anything else.

Iranians/ Persians have been always very nationalistic throughout written history so indeed its a good fall back by the religious regime

there was a point when the Iranian population would have had enough of those ever smiling Ayatollahs portraits every corner of the street and public private place.

from burger joint to barbershop , public toilets, to libraries parks, offices, schools universities and national celebrations there is will be one or two of those obnoxious ayatollahs smiling over your insignificant self there just no escape.

Patriotism is a good thing! People should put the interests of their country before their religious beliefs. Religion is about your relationship with your creator. Not about forcing your beliefs on everybody else. If you force a religious ideology at a societal level, it becomes a totalitarian system. Other totalitarian systems included Communism, fascism and nazism. Nothing good comes out of forced ideology.

Iranians have a lot to look up to in their nations history. A lot of good values in tolerance and coexistence. Which is a pre-requisite for an advancing, vibrant and happy society. I hope future generations of Iranians will remember those examples in their history, as they kick out the Islamist thieves and make Iran a great place for all her children to live and be an example to others, once again.

Must be fun seeing the friendly neighborhood Ayatollah smiling at you in a public toilet:D

On a serious note, Iran has historically been a diverse nation of different faiths and ethnic groups coexisting peacefully. It is only since the US started intervening did the Islamists start becoming popular as a counter to imperialism and US intervention, and the rest is history. I am sure it is safe to say the Ayatollah's heavy influence has done more harm to Iran than good.

That's true. I think the Ayatollahs was to be the exact opposite of America in every way. They probably thought it was funny to use him as a reflective learning tool, just you know, cos they could.
