A simple comparison of statistics provided by the Census of India may give us a hint on whether the issue of illegal migrant in Assam is a real threat or just a myth. The number of Muslims in the 1971 Census was 3,594,006. The decadal growth of Muslims in Assam in 1971 was 29.96%. If we assume that this decadal growth remained constant at around 30%, the Muslim population in Assam will be around 10,500,000. The Muslim population in the
1971 census was 10,679,345. Therefore, infiltration of Bangladeshi migrants after the cut-off year 1971 is nominal.

The rate of increase of Muslim population is higher than that of Hindu population since independence, owing to higher fertility, lower education level, poor healthcare, among others. However, Muslim fertility rates in India are falling faster than among Hindus. If the statistics published by the Census of India is indicative of population behaviour in the country, the entire issue of illegal migration in Assam has to be relooked in a realistic perspective.

If assamese natoinalist are so much concerned about to protect their ethno-linguistic identity that even Hindu Bengali are a big threat to them then why they are living under Indian domination? Why they are not struggling to create an independent assam? How they wish to maintain an exclusive state of their own when 99 percent of the population of India are not assamese? God fobid, if assam show sign of economic progress, then millions of Hindi speaker from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh will flood their assam much like they have done in places like Maharastra, Karnataka or Punjab which created tension there.If such thing happen to assam then they will just blown away.It is very much a contradiction to be a part of a multi ethnic and multicultural hodgepodge and then wish to maintain a unique territorial boundary where only their own kind will live.If I am not wrong, assamese also has agitation against hindi speaker in assam.This peculier race 'assamese' are continuously agitating against other indian ethnicies for the atleast 100 years.I wish it may drain their energy for another thousand years to come.

My only concern are for those poor, uneducated muslim farmers and laborer who do not have all those documents which could have prove their place of origin.Many muslim in assam live along the river bank of Bhahmaputra, they are the people who live with river erosion and flooding, so they are forced to move from one place to another when their home lost to river erosion.Many of them have no documents or permanent residence.Think about the people in BD who live in the char.They are like same people, very poor, uneducated, no permanent ancestral address.A big part of muslim belongs to them.These are the people are branded as 'illegal Bangladeshi' in assam and they are likely to suffer.
