Army won’t leave South Waziristan: Kayani

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN AGENCY: Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Monday said that Pakistan Army would continue the rehabilitation and reconstruction work for the uplift of the people of South Waziristan, after it had flushed out terrorists and maintained peace in the area.

While meeting tribal elders after inauguration of a cadet college at Spinkai and ground breaking of Tank-Gomal-WANA road, he said army did not want to initiate operations within the country. However, its presence in South Waziristan was to improve the situation and eliminate any chance of reoccurrence of terrorism in the area, he added. Kayani said that army was deployed in the area on the demand of the locals and would remain present there until they wished and until the completion of development projects. He said the building of the cadet college was being completed at a cost of Rs 500 million and it was second such college in the area.

The classes for the first batch had already started while the second batch would join in August, he added. The army chief said that education was the key to success for every nation and it would go a long way for the uplift of the area as coming generation of the area would be the main beneficiary of the projects started there.

He said that under a well-planned strategy, a network of roads was being completed in the area, which would serve as the third transit link for trade with Afghanistan. Kayani said the road network would also reduce distance between Pakistan and Afghanistan by 350 kilometres. The army chief said water supply schemes, dams and provision of electricity would change the fate of the area. He also announced construction of a cricket stadium in the Chaghmali area.

Earlier, the army chief was briefed about completion of Tank-Gomal-WANA road. He was informed that a 215-kilometre portion of the road had been completed, while the remaining 350 kilometres would be complete by the next year. app

I would like to see what MMS does now . In the last 5 days of unprovoked firing , we have lost 3 soldiers and yet no response . they killed 166 unarmed people in Mumbai in 2008 and haven't done anything to punish those responsible and yet there has been no response . Whether you like it or not the current leadership is spineless .
