Pakistan Army is looking for a new SMG in 7.62x39mm caliber. Any suggestions?

.
Replacing which gun?

Mp5 is slowly being phased out from the checkpoint and other field duties.

Replacing the 9mm MP-5 that is now practically ineffective weapon for war fighters!

Army has serious maintenance and usage problems with the Type 56 Chinese rifles. The rifles are of such poor quality that even the parts are not interchangeable! That would however be expected for a US$100 rifle!!! :undecided: This is the reason that they have specified the new SMG to be of Russian or European origin. The SMG in 7.62x39mm would essentially be a mini-me of the larger caliber assault rifle in 7.62x39mm caliber.

Type 56 is an assault rifle

How much per gun can Pakistan army spend?

SMGs use 9mm AFAIK, the caliber you mentioned is used by Assault Rifles and Light or Medium Machine guns.

Not necessarily, SMG's have traditionally used pistol cartridges like the 9mm, 7.62 x 25 tokarev, .45ACP and .40 S&W but also have branched out into PDW which used high velocity low recoil rounds used for penitration of level III armor like 5.7x28mm, 4.6x30mm, 4.38x30mm Libra, 5.56x45mm NATO, and 7.92x24mm.

Minsas developed by DRDO uses a 5.56 x 30 a shortened 0.223 cartridge.
7.62 x 39 with a bullpup design and a buffer tube spring just might be controllable enough to use as a SMG weapon. It will be very interesting if PA does develops such a system.

7.62x39mm caliber - This is for assault rifles.

MP-7 and other PDWs like P-90s are good options but very expensive.

Why SMGs for army anyways? they anyway gonna face 7.62x39mm caliber or standard NATO 5.56x45" in conventional/non conventional battle. SMGs lack range in that scenario IMO.
