I agree with Military, he saved precious blood(Life) of fellow Jewans. Good Good for him.

I read a New York time Article and in that the man said he went to vote for election and this is what Indian Army paid him with. He regrets that he should have listened to the others and should not have voted denouncing the Indian occupation.

He first voted and then joined the mob for stone throwing

He wanted to have it both ways

He was picked up from the street ; not from his home or work place

What the major did was stupid, what the army brass did was unbelievably stupid. You are supposed to deny responsibility from the top leadership so as to not inflame the situation, not give them a pat on the back. That's what ignites tensions.

While the Indian army can secure and hold territory, and neutralize disparate bands of insurgents and their ability to fight unhindered, it is impossible to completely quell insurgencies without securing the support of the locals as it is indeed impossible to secure 100% of the territory and kill/capture 100% of the insurgents, while it is far easier to manage peoples opinions. People crave and want security in any conflict zone, to antagonize them further with petty and operationally redundant acts is a great strategy for losing the goodwill of the people. Did this Major (and the military leadership) learn nothing at OTA?

Indian Army is broadsword, not a scalpel. Those who want to do the pole dance with broadsword will risk cuts on their groins.

Indian army was never actively there in Kashmir but these Jihadis were itching for it.

Srinagar: An Army court exonerated the officer and praised him for tying a youth to a moving jeep in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam on April 9 to "avoid" stone pelting on forces.

The Army had ordered a probe by the Army Court of Inquiry (COI) after police registered an FIR for the incident when an Army Major tied a youth to the bonnet of a jeep as a human shield.

Army sources said Major Nitin Gogol has been praised by the Court of INquiry for "presence of mind to avoid casualties or injuries".

There was widespread condemnation of the act by various politicians, including former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

This is a ludicrous verdict.

This man braved all the militants to exercise his franchise.

The army was posted to protect these type of people.

Instead of protecting him they used him as a shield to protect themselves?

The army should have opened fire, if need be, on the stone pelters to protect this man as well as themselves.

This sets a very bad precedent and patriotic people like these would now hesitate going to the booth to vote.

What a tragedy.

Putting myself in his position, I might have been inclined towards ramming someone if they threatened my men but I would have chosen to avoid confrontation if possible.

Spoken like a fauji.

The Chetwodian motto at the IMA :

First, the safety, honour and welfare of your country come first, always and every time
Second, the honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command come next.
Third, your own ease, comfort and safety come last, always and every time.

The officer did just this.

I must note that there seems to be no indication that the man tied to the car was put through any additional abuse. Thus although I do not condone the officer's actions or say that they were justified, I can relate to the rationale he might have had at the time when he made this decision.
No , he wasnt harmed at all.

In this regard, I envy the Indian Govt and Military, they have a much more fluid working relationship.

Yes, though there are hiccups as they would be in any system, by & large the working between the Govt & Armed Forces is good. Neither steps into the working domain of each other.

A YO is exactly that,
He is a YO, and there is a reason why we have senior officers, a code on conduct and training.

Is a Major considered a YO in your army? In mine an officer of Field Officer rank is not.

Instead of protecting him they used him as a shield to protect themselves?

Opened fire ? This is not Zarb e Azb.

The detachment was tasked to provide protection to polling officers.
