Why would he retire early if he has ear deafness in one ear. Its minor disability at best. He might even be exaggerating to get higher pensions.

He will do his service till the end.

Well he's not the C.E.O of a Multi national, this is not how things work in Military Institutions, they have very strict rules when it comes to disabilities. So Let's wait and see.

.
I am sure he will not retire. With just 4 months to retire and partial deafness in one does not prevent him from performing his duties. At this level it will be mostly paperwork. I agree with gogbot it might be for retirement benefits.

Its deafness in one ear.
If its really that serious the man can wear a hearing aid in the troubled ear. and he still has a perfectly good ear. As well its only 4 months who in their right mind would force him to retire at this point of his career.

Besides we all know that the Army chief is more a political position that a Military one.

Well obviously the general doesn't have to go to the front line and fight.
But laws can never be discriminatory, they are equal for all. I'm not suggesting that I want him to retire early but this is how it works. So lets wait see what actually happens.

Yes but that is four months away. In case of a disability the officer is retired immediately, but i'm unaware of something like this happening at this level.

partial hearing disability in a desk job does not result in retiral..His designation at retirement will be disabled. If at all it will get him additional disability pension

This raises some interesting points.

1. Agreed that some officers from the Artillery are generally partially deaf owing to the nature of their job. But most of these officers are retired owing to this medical problem. If Gen. Kapoor was partially deaf, how and why was he promoted to such a level? Army is not an equal opportunity employer? It reflects very badly on the Indian Army as an institution to have impaired soldiers at the top.

2. Old age is not an excuse for an Army Chief. Army Chief's have to be fit mentally and physically in all regards to lead.

Your post above almost convinces me that the Indian Army will next be looking at having deaf, dumb, hearing impaired, partially blind, limb amputated officers gunning to be the next Chief's? :azn:

Nice hook.. I am glad you aimed it at the institution and not the person.

I would love to see Indian Army following what you are suggesting for every officer.

This is really serious - both for China and Pak.
For what he hears on the hotline - his PM telling him not to attack but he
Attacks instead. Who cud blame him - he heard -"ATTACK"
I tend to agree with Third-Eye
This is a blessing indeed for the old age because he does not even hear what he himself says
All that brouhaha down here for what he never said - attacking Pakistan and China at the same time - hardly made any sense to him.

.
wait if Kapoor is retiring in 4 months who is replacing him.

The above photograph is of
Lt Gen V K Singh,
presently commanding Eastern Army Command, who; according to MoD sources who have confirmed to me,
will come to Delhi as the next Chief of Army Staff, by virtue of being the seniormost officer when the present Chief, General Deepak Kapoor retires on March 31, 2010.

Well, obviously you do not have a military background.

Retirement on medical grounds happens only when the soldier cannot perform his duties due to the impairment. There are laid down scales & norms for all forms of medical disabilities. So long as the soldier stays within these , its ok. In the instant case, he must be withing permissible limits of auditory capacities.

He is.Mush chose not to retire well past the age for Govt employees.

Your convincing abilities leave a lot to be desired. There have been famous generals including those in the IA who rose to their ranks despite having lost a limb which was ' attributable to military service' .

Watch Men Of Honor

That's a movie brother, if things started happening according to movies,
U.S would have needed 2 to 3 Rambos to kill talibans and win Afghan War. "Valkyrie" is another movie with a disabled officer.

Don't get all defensive, I'm just trying to explain how things work in the military. Gen Kapoor retiring now or in March will not make any difference.

Talking about a non-issue here. After age 45, usually standards are relaxed as aging is taken into consideration. The fact that Gen Kapoor is already close to retirement age, it matters little if his medical categorization is lowered and that too due to an incident.

Lowering of medical category also does not mean that someone has to be kicked out of their job, especially when its a minor thing. There is a difference in what is required for field officers and for general staff at the very end of their service.

Apart from going some wat def he has also gone mental with the pagal comments he makes about haterd and about wanting war .... poor lad needs serious medical help lol.

Before people start gloating..

Gen Deepak Kapoor is from the Artillery. Gunners & Tankmen suffer from this problem. Unlike the west, ear muffs are " frowned' upon and often consider ' un officer like'.

In addition to deafness, Tankmen also suffer from Trachoma due to the dust.

lastly, in old age it is actually a blessing in disguise. Leaves you with the option of "not" hearing things you do not want to !

Gen Musharraf was also a gunner.
