Army chief has gone partially deaf in left ear

Loud noises from firing guns during US trip may have caused damage

Army chief General Deepak Kapoor suffered acute deafness in his left ear because of loud noises generated by booming guns when he visited the US last year. As a result, the army chief has been placed in a lower medical category just four months before retirement. A lower medical category indicates partial disability and entitlement to higher pensions.
Medical records accessed by DNA suggest that Gen Kapoor suffers from "noise-induced sensorineural hearing loss (bilat)". The medical records are signed by Col WVBS Ramalingam, senior advisor in ENT and head & neck surgery at the Army Hospital in Delhi.
The doctor's certificate, issued on November 23 last year, says during the army chief's visit to the US in July 2009, "he was closely exposed to loud noise in the form of small weapons firing and gun firing during a counter-terrorism demo by US soldiers. The general officer also fired some of the weapons in field firing range. Since then he (has) developed acute deafness in the left ear. He was unable to discriminate (between) spoken words".
The doctor's diagnosis suggests that Gen Kapoor "is recommended to be fit for release from service in medical classification H2". A normal army officer should be in SHAPE-1 — SHAPE is an acronym for psychological, hearing, appendages (limbs), physical and eyes. The H2 classification of the army chief means he is in a lower medical category. In fact, the military sources DNA spoke .

Before people start gloating..

Gen Deepak Kapoor is from the Artillery. Gunners & Tankmen suffer from this problem. Unlike the west, ear muffs are " frowned' upon and often consider ' un officer like'.

In addition to deafness, Tankmen also suffer from Trachoma due to the dust.

lastly, in old age it is actually a blessing in disguise. Leaves you with the option of "not" hearing things you do not want to !

wait if Kapoor is retiring in 4 months who is replacing him.

Gen Kapoor might be the first General to retire on grounds of physical fitness.

Why is that, The article says he was already slated for retirement before.

Yes but that is four months away. In case of a disability the officer is retired immediately, but i'm unaware of something like this happening at this level.

This raises some interesting points.

1. Agreed that some officers from the Artillery are generally partially deaf owing to the nature of their job. But most of these officers are retired owing to this medical problem. If Gen. Kapoor was partially deaf, how and why was he promoted to such a level? Army is not an equal opportunity employer? It reflects very badly on the Indian Army as an institution to have impaired soldiers at the top.

2. Old age is not an excuse for an Army Chief. Army Chief's have to be fit mentally and physically in all regards to lead.

Your post above almost convinces me that the Indian Army will next be looking at having deaf, dumb, hearing impaired, partially blind, limb amputated officers gunning to be the next Chief's? :azn:

Why would he retire early if he has ear deafness in one ear. Its minor disability at best. He might even be exaggerating to get higher pensions.

He will do his service till the end.
