Are Pashtuns in majority?

Pashtuns in Pakistan are not the majority. But their population is far higher than what is in the census as the census is linguistic. There may be approximately 50 million pashtuns in Pakistan opposed to the official figure of 28 million.

That I believe is true as well, and as some members have highlighted this is probably due to under reporting of female members of this ethnic group due to notions of privacy and honour. The next census might be quite revealing in this regard as a lot of Pashtuns have moved out of their traditional areas of inhabitance in Western Pakistan since 1998, and this might make it easier to ascertain their true numbers.

Exactly. And wannabe Pashtuns like me aren't even counted. Mainly because when we came from Lucknow we did not have the gift of Pashto and thus identified as urdu speakers. Another factor is that we ourselves have weak and unproven pashtun roots.

Non Pashto speaking Pashtuns would make a large chunk of those pashtuns who aren't counted in the census. Imran Khan is one such pashtuns as are the Niazis and Tareens. Both don't have the gift of Pashto.

I dont know why you associate yourself with Pir Roshan. For selling a book/novel on war on terror (with Pashtun characters in it), you obviously committed the fraud and made a false claim. You were hoping that it will sell like Kite runner?, by associating with Pashtuns, your book will have more credibility?. No matter how much it offends you but lanat on me if i am not honest and straight forward with you. You want a hypocrite butter-talk or "Safa Khabara" of a Pashtun?

Here i breaks it down to you,

1- In India , the Ansaris, who are very numerous, 99.99% of them have nothing to do with Pir-Roshan or Pathans. The numerous Ansaris in all parts of India, other than those of Qaimganj, are converts from low caste of Hinduism and are associated with a particular caste.

2- I have went through Lucknow district Gazetteer, British have documented all names of Pathan tribes which live Lucknow city, nearby Malihabad Town and some other villages, also briefly mentioning the histories of some notable families. None were Descendants of Pir Roshan.

3- The true descendant of Jalala s/o of Pir-i-Roshan, are called "Khanzadas". They live in Kaimganj area of Farrukhabad (some of them might have migrated to Karachi n 1947). Pir-i-Roshan's grandson and son of Jalala, Allahdad Khan entered into the Mughal service. Got the title of Rashid Khan and became a very high ranking mansadar in Mughal army. His brother Mirza Khan Ansari, a famous Pashto poet, also settled in India. They were given a jagir in Shamsabad which they named Mau Rashidabad. Rashid Khan converted Mau into a colony of Pashtuns, mostly from Karlanri tribes who were his followers. The descendants of Rashid Khan and Mirza Khan, were called "Khanzadas" and they held prestigious position in the area. Later a Bangash from Mau, Muhammad Khan, made a tremendous progress and established Farrukhabad state. The rise of Bangashs, over-shadowed the Khanzadas and in 1878 Irvine williams reports that Khanzadas are improvised and take care of the tombs of their ancestors in Kaimganj. They had lineage tree and other records in their possessions.

Well, Jats mainly migrated to Punjab and Kashmir from Rajasthan; where they converted to Islam in large numbers and many migrated to modern day Pakistan after the migration - and another exodus occured when they were driven from Kashmir and into Punjab. Gujjars followed the same migration patterns since they were an offshoot of the Jatts.

The theory is that jats moved from Sindh, but now there are not any jats in Sindh which is weird. Jat tribes in central punjab could be just zamindars who started to identify as jats many centuries ago. Also gujjars are not offshoot of jats or related, they are different. Anyway genetically there isn't much difference between different punjabi zamindar castes/tribes like jats, arains, gujjars, abbasi, awans, rajputs etc. But genetic differences are there between punjabi zamindar and kammi/menial castes.

This type of combative attitude and dislike if not hatred for well wishers of Pashtuns or those wanting to merge as one is the primary threat to the pashtun cause. You do not see that the falling number of Pashto speakers will need more outsiders coming towards pashto.

People like you are traditionalists and hate anyone from outside trying to be like them. Rather than seeing Pashtuns rise jointly with Pakistan you seek to sabotage their growth in the hope that it will damage Pakistan. This will not happen. What has my book got to do with anything. People from outside have written books and made films of Scots, indigenous Indians and Japanese which have been highly positive towards them. It brings attention to a topic that is not discussed. It looks towards the heroes of Pashtun culture who sacrificed much for liberty, humanity and peace.

My book is also very sympathetic to Pashtuns but you are too blind to see that.

Then there is the question is hating something without trying it. Its like saying Pizza Hut is bad without ever trying it. Such a person who destroys anothers reputation with an agenda is the real lanati rather than a person who works to improve a communities image. Other than that you are a known traitor and Anti Pakistani.

The book does not have more credibility because it is about Pashtuns. The book has credibility because it tells a story that is engaging and sympathetic towards a group of people who have worked hard for a living and for Pakistan. What is your true problem with the book? That it paints the Pashtuns as patriotic Pakistanis rather than traitors like your typical brothers Admin Khan and Toramana?

Ansaris are not part of any low caste. We were gifted land from the mughals and Abu Ayub Ansari is an ancestor. I have repeated this constantly. Hate filled and racist individuals like you find the connection though. Even we don't know for sure whether we have links with Pir Roshan and it is not an accepted fact in our family. However we could share a connection.

In reality it does not matter. At the end of the day I respect pashtuns and my book has brought me closer to them to such a degree that I learn about them and if possible identify as one after Pakistan.
.

There are dozens of Pashtuns who are present in Lucknow and surrounding areas like Barabanki and Fatehpur (Fatehpur is known for pashtun heritage). The only thing is when the partition occurred and these Pashtun families moved they did not know pashto due to heavy presence outside Pashto language speaking areas. Thus they became urdu speakers. At least 30% of Urdu speakers are like this including Saulat Mirza.

Identity is a strange thing. It can live on in these urdu speakers as they often identify as Yousfzai, Niazi or Khattak but people like you stand like a wall blocking them from seeking out their pashtun roots most notably out of fear they will not support a divisive agenda-especially one asking for the break up of Pakistan.

You are focused too much on texts that speak of the Pashtuns. How would you know more about my lineage and history than us? I never said I have 100% proof that we are ancestors of Pir Roshan. It is believed by some of us we are and the Ansari lineage speaks of this.

Again there are not many wannabe pathans in punjab, otherwise we could see more presence of them. Instead we for most part only knows about Niazis, Kasuris and some other pathans in punjab. I agree with Samandari, their population in punjab is not more then 1-2 million. And we all know Niazis, Kasuris etc are real descendants of pashtuns.

Obviously not counting migration after 1947.

I would put the figure of Pashtuns in Punjab to around 5 Million. Pashtuns are spread out around Pakistan. Just Karachi is 25% Pashtun and its the biggest city and largest pashtun population containing city-even before Peshawar.

I was not counting internal migration after 1947 or maybe even after 1900. Now pashtuns are 25% of Karachi population but we know from British census of Sindh that pathan population was not more then few thousands century ago. So lets say 5 million is right figure for pashtuns in punjab, it means most of them migrated after 1947 and likely still speak pashto. I know such pashtuns in Kharian who migrated little bit earlier then 1947, maybe 1930 and still speak pashto.

@haviZsultan The difference between Imran Khan and the likes of babar Ghauri is that Khan actually looks like a Pashtun who comes from an area that is adjacent to Pashtun lands who has proven Pashtun links, whilst Ghauri is well .....enough said.

The jats hardly have a presence in Rajastan or in sindh, I doubt it they have roots their and gujjars are a seperate group.

The indegenous languages are disappearing though in favor of urdu and with the educated elite even urdu is disappearing for English. I knew Punjabis who can't speak punjabi and urdu speakers who can't write in urdu-this includes me who was also raised as urdu speaker though I do not like it. We need to do more to protect indigenous languages of not just the provinces but languages like Chitrali Urmuri Hindko and Seraiki which do not have patronage in any province. A report recently said and truly said only 8% of the population currently speaks the national tongue natively.

I agree.

the actual pashtun (the tribal pashtun, who can trace their lineage from one of the pashtun tribal confederation) are very less in number. most of the pashtun in pakistan are actually pashtunised one. pashtun migrated to the current pashtunkhwa abode and there were already settled people here, most of them got diluted in pashtun. a pashtun from that area can tell you who are actually pashtun and who are qasab gar, kareegar, zargar, qureshyan, faqeeran, hindki, seraikiyan, sayedan, awan, kotaran etc who will pass on as a pashtun. for example the area i live in will be considered 100 percent pashtun in census, but in reality the tribal pashtun don't make more than 15 percent.

Luffy needs to make a trip to South Punjab. Some old, some migratory, and some new. We have a lot pathans, and now they have even started settling in our villages.

What I can say for sure that there are more Pakhtoons in Karachi then in Kabul. This is the stat which matter the most as we have made Afghanistan redundant as far as their playing Pakhtoon card against Pakistan. Roles are reversed now.

One request, please dont call them Pashtuns, its a Afghani term with Persian influence on it with emphasis on "sh". In Pakistan we say "Pakhtoon" with emphasis on "kh". That way KPK is refered as Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa, not PashtunKhawa.
what are you blabbering about idiot, there is no such thing as pakhtun, it is either pashtun or pathan. referring to the word original etymology, the word pakhtun is a corrupted one from pashtun. live with it.
