KARACHI: Pakistani lawmakers’ call for the government to remain neutral on the escalating crisis in Yemen has evoked a strong response from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“The vague and contradictory stands of Pakistan and Turkey are an absolute proof that Arab security — from Libya to Yemen — is the responsibility of none but Arab countries,” UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash said.

Speaking to renowned Emirati newspaperKhaleej Times, Garhash warned Pakistan of having to pay a “heavy price” for taking on what he called an “ambiguous stand”. He added that Pakistan should take a clear position “in favour of its strategic relations with the six-nation Arab Gulf cooperation Council”.

“The Arabian Gulf is in a dangerous confrontation, its strategic security is on the edge, and the moment of truth distinguishes between the real ally and the ally of media and statements,” Gargashtweetedmoments after the Pakistani parliament passed the resolution insisting on neutrality in the Yemen conflict.

Gargash went to symbolise Pakistan’s resolution as equivalent of siding up with Iran instead of the Gulf. “Tehran seems to be more important to Islamabad and Ankara than the Gulf countries,” Gargash said.

“Though our economic and investment assets are inevitable, political support is missing at critical moments,” he added.

The Parliament on Friday passed a unanimous resolution, vowing to defend Saudi Arabia’s territorial integrity and the holy places of Makkah and Madinah. But none of these locations appear to have so far been threatened by the conflict.

“Pakistan should play a mediating role and not get involved in the fighting in Yemen,” the resolution stated, adding that “the Parliament of Pakistan ... underscores the need for continued efforts by the government of Pakistan to find a peaceful resolution of the crisis”.

“[Parliament] desires that Pakistan should maintain neutrality in the Yemen conflict so as to be able to play a proactive diplomatic role to end the crisis,” it stated.

The Saudi-led coalition launched air strikes against the Houthi rebels on March 26 in support of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi after they seized the capital and forced him to flee to Aden.

The complexity of the economy of the UAE far exceeds that of most other ME countries including Iran. Nor is UAE depending on any migrants be they Arab or non-Arab. Literary millions of people want to get into the UAE but can't. It's one of the countries that have experienced the highest migration rates in the world of late.

For your information then the GCC alone is a 2 TRILLION dollar economy (GDP nominal).

Lastly nor is anybody going to deport anyone outside of illegal migrants and criminals as usual which is standard procedure in every sane country. The relations between Pakistan and the GCC and Arab world are still extremely close on all fronts. This decision is not going to change anything and it was always symbolic. This is an Arab coalition dealing with an internal Arab conflict for a reason.

Akhi, I think what Pakistanis are incensed at are the words of the Emirati minister because they not only come across as threatening but also insulting as if a lesser Nation is being addressed by the Emirati gentlemen; because we Pakistanis are very conscious about our self-respect (whatever our Government may do)...the reaction is one of anger.

I suppose what Pakistanis are saying is that essentially we will not compromise on KSA's territorial integrity and we will approach this issue in our own way but we will not be insulted like that.

Maybe in the next few days things will clear up a bit.

Heavy price?

Pakistan still has a triumph card. China beside her is all enough. The world largest second economy with 4 trillion forex reserve easily support any financial crisis and assist in building of infrastructure. A country with technology advances and manufacturing prowess to assist any advances of countries in military and technology.

Arabs is nothing.

I have not seen his comments in the Arabic media and whatever a junior minister says on Twitter during a tense time for the region should not be taken for more than it is. I don't think that the cordial relations between UAE and Pakistan will be damaged at all nor is the UAE going to deport Pakistanis.

I frankly, as I wrote earlier, am happy with Pakistan's decision although it was always about a symbolic gesture. 1000 mountain troops would be good though due to the experience and just to give the coalition further legitimacy.

Without comparing anyone with the US then they too did never invade Afghanistan or Iraq on their own. They had a coalition of dozen upon dozen of countries to rely on as well. Most of it was politics as well.

Trust me the Arab leaders have realized that they need to deal with their own problems and conflicts hence the Arab joint force of 40.000 soldiers no matter how big our house is and how difficult it is to keep it clean and how many "guests" we meet in the process if you understand what I am alluding to here.

Pakistan is in a trap now. He makes Arab an enmy. It means more instability in Pakistan.

Given that large remittance from Pakistan workers in GCC, they hold considerable power over Pakistan's economy

They are doing but at the same time they relize who is the real friend and who is not.

If they are giving open warning to Pakistan , it doesn't means not to interfere, it means more interference.

Time for India to shine and become Arabs new best friend.
