Apple is considering moving a fifth of its production from China to India, a new report claims.

The tech giant is in talks with Indian officials about producing up to $40billion worth of smartphones over the next five years through manufacturers Wistron and Foxconn, according to the India's Economic Times.

The move - which could make Apple India's largest exporter - comes as the coronavirus pandemic that began in Wuhan, China, caused major disruptions in tech supply chains.

A government official told ET that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with top executives from Apple, Samsung and domestic phone producer Lava late last year to launch an ambitious production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme to bring more tech manufacturing to the country.

'India isn't a big market for Apple as the company sells only a fraction of its total output in India,' the official said.

'It is actually looking at India as a base to manufacture and export, essentially diversifying its production out of China.'
Under the PLI scheme companies are required to manufacture at least $10million worth of merchandise between 2020 and 2025.

At present, Apple manufactures about $500million dollars worth of phones in the country, which accounts for about $1.5billion of its phone sales, per ET.

By comparison, Apple produced about $220billion worth of merchandise in China in 2018-2019, with $185billion of that exported.

The purported shift in production comes after the coronavirus pandemic that began in Wuhan, China, caused major disruptions in tech supply chains. Pictured: An Apple factory in China

ET reported that government officials have faced some pushback from Apple over the terms of the PLI scheme, which provides an incentive of four to six percent on incremental sales.

'There are some problems with some of the clauses,' the source said. 'For instance, valuing the entire plant and machinery already in use in its plants across China and other places at 40 percent of that value and the extent of the business information sought under the scheme are some of the irritants.'

However, the source said Indian officials are eager to resolve those issues so the plans can come to fruition.

Apple has not spoken publicly about the purported shift in production and did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com's request for comment.

Meanwhile, market experts have expressed skepticism over the PLI plan.

'We don't have ecosystem ready which could support any large-scale deployment,' Faisal Kawoosa, founder at research agency TechArc, told ET. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...tion-China-India-coronavirus-disruptions.html

Dreaming is OK (Vietnamese media nowadays, too, are flooded with such news about shifting from China to Vietnam), but using such emotional news for your national plan will make devastating effects to your own people.

Let's wait until something realized.

Agree

.
disruption of supply chain has ended after china controlled covid19 cases ,this disruption is global issue now as all nations are facing lock downs including india so shifting production to india will not solve this supply chain problem

I doubt it.

China can manipulate the export of components to India for local assembley and that would make this quite a difficult project. eg cost of components, quality of delivered components(failure rate etc). Quite a lot of the components and eco-system are in China right now. It comes down to if China see's this as a strategic threat or not. Given how much of the infrastructure and people exists in China right now, Apple woud have to make large investments to make this happen in India, and China can price that out given the infrastructure cost is already spent in China and the people are already there. Lower the cost of components such that Apples component costs in India are simply not viable on a commerical level.

Anyway. Who wants to purchase a made in India product ? eewwwww anyway ...

Who would want to invest in a country that is undergoing a war within and with its neighbors?

What gives apple a hope about India? What great product is made in India that gives apple a justification? Companies may wish to leave China for political reasons, but India is not its substitute.

Western companies are gonna loose their credibility, assuredly, once they move production to hindia. Simply because the mindset of ******** is one of jahils, regardless of how educated they may claim to be. The majority, not all, ******** are in essence, under the spell of hindu, aryan race, supremacy mindset. And the fact that they literally worship the white-skinned god's, will only solidify the impeding doom which will come to fore.

Well I am at one point surprised that people are thinking Apple (or any other company) has/had no manufacturing base in India (for this context) and only due to coronavirus they are shifting their base. Thats factually big wrong. Apple has/had been shifting in India since last few years. some reports are as follow

Apple's India-made top-end iPhones to hit stores next month: source

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...to-hit-stores-next-month-source-idINKCN1U62AZ

Apple starts selling locally assembled iPhone XR in India

Apple expands Indian manufacturing, will export iPhones and components

https://venturebeat.com/2019/11/25/...facturing-will-export-iphones-and-components/

iPhones made in India now being exported to European markets, not simply sold domestically

https://9to5mac.com/2019/07/11/iphone-india-exports/

Same goes for Samsung

Samsung goes big in India with world's largest mobile factory

https://money.cnn.com/2018/07/09/te...a-biggest-factory-noida-smartphone/index.html

They are shifting for their benefits like labor, cost, tax exemption etc. bringing political issues may score some brownie points but manufacturing is not impacted by that and so do manufacturers.
