Apple IPhones Sales in China Outsell the U.S. for First Time - Bloomberg Business

Apple Inc. sold more iPhones in greater China than in the U.S. for the first time, buoyed by the New Year gift-giving holiday as the larger-screened smartphones found eager buyers in Asia.

While the Cupertino, California-based tech company doesn’t break out iPhone shipments by country, Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri confirmed the sales in an interview Monday, after the company reported record profit during the first three months of the year. He didn’t give specific unit sales figures.

“The progress we’ve made in China has been remarkable and we continue to make incredible investments in China,” Maestri said. “The growth rate in China is significantly higher than most parts of the world. In the short-term, we don’t expect China to become bigger than the U.S. but over the long arc of time, you could certainly draw that conclusion.”

The success of the iPhone in China along with last week’s rollout of the Apple Watch underscore the importance of Chinese consumers for Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook’s efforts to keep up sales momentum. Revenue rose 27 percent to $58 billion in the fiscal second quarter, topping analysts’ average projection for $56 billion, according to estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Cook said Apple is on track have about 40 stores in greater China by the middle of 2016, up from the current 21. He has also said China is poised to overtake the U.S. as Apple’s biggest market at some point.

“By everything I can see, we did extremely well,” Cook said of Apple’s sales in China during a conference call following the results.

“Our big question is what happens in China for the next few quarters?” said Ben Bajarin, an analyst at Creative Strategies LLC. “Are they on par with the U.S.? At some point in time, it feels like it is inevitable that every quarter iPhone in China will be bigger than the U.S.”

INSIGHT-Chinese demand for Apple's big-screen phones fuel sales growth| Reuters

"Samsung won over millions of Chinese mobile customers four years ago with its Galaxy Note 'phablet', creating a whole new category somewhere between a phone and a tablet, with screen sizes of more than five inches diagonally, compared to the previous standard of about four inches.

Apple is starting to win some of them back again.

"Apple really had no choice but to come back with a bigger screen iPhone for the 5-inch category to bring those switchers back, and that's precisely what they've done," said Mawston.

EASIER TO WRITE IN CHINESE

Chinese customers gravitated naturally to the bigger screen size, as it makes it easier to input Chinese characters with a finger or stylus on the screen and is more effective for video."

A few of my friends have the iPhone 6 Plus. It is indeed a very nice phone. Not my kind of phone, but still very nice.

You are a rich guy...
I won`t spend 1000 USD just for a phone...
There are many nice Android phones around 2000-2500RMB(300-400USD), like Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, etc..
With the rest money, I can buy another computer..

Most users in US get their phones from network provider like AT&T, right?
What is the price for a Iphone 6 +?

As i said before, Apple is more than a company, it has already trascended that. Its more like a cult now. I hardly see any company in this world which can be compared with Apple, from its influence/size/value/worldwide reach, well maybe apart from google to a lesser extent. Apple is unlike any company we have seen in our times, and the good news is that it will keep getting even more bigger/dominant/valuable with time, since users of Iphone are very loyal and hardly ever switch to another brand unlike other userof other brands. My wife suffers from the ame apple disease, i have tried to talk her out of apple now for years invane.lool Apple is not only dominant in Chin, but all over Asia and the world. Though it now gets most of its revenue from status conscious Chinese people in China, this wil only increase with time.

Apple announces strong second quarter in Asia, and record-breaking numbers in China

Apple today announced its financial results for what it terms the second quarter of 2015, and by all accounts, things went well. The company posted strong numbers across the board, but nowhere were they stronger than in Asia, where Apple’s mobile products performed particularly well.

In the company’s Q2 earnings call, CFO Luca Maestri revealed that Apple set an all-time quarterly record for revenue in China, taking in US$16.8 billion during the quarter (up 77.8 percent year-on-year). The cause of the growth, according to CEO Tim Cook, was Apple’s increased efforts in infrastructure and its ecosystem in China taking root over this quarter. He cited, for example, the additional Apple stores Apple has opened in China so far this year, the addition of UnionPay as a payment option for Chinese customers, and improvements made to Apple’s online store in China, which Cook says tripled its revenue year-on-year.

Cook said that the iPhone led the way in terms of Apple’s China revenues, but the iPad also had its best-ever quarter in China, and Mac sales were also up 31 percent despite a PC market that is shrinking overall. The Chinese App Store had a record-breaking quarter and grew more than 100 percent year-on-year, and Cook said that Apple has paid out nearly US$2.5 billion to Chinese app developers over the past 12 months.

But it’s not just China – Apple is doing well all over Asia. Maestri said that iPhone sales more than doubled during Q2 in Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam, and the iPad had its best-ever Q2 in Japan. Cook said that a lot of the growth across Asia’s emerging markets was driven by first-time buyers. Even in China, Cook said, more than 70 percent of iPad buyers are first-time iPad owners. As Asia’s middle class emerges they are driving record-breaking sales for Apple. Of course, the lunar new year holiday is also a big driver of sales in some Asian markets, especially China.

Cook also touched on the Apple Watch during the earnings call, saying that early customer reviews are almost universally positive and that demand outstrips supply, but the company did not provide any specific sales numbers for the Watch in Asia or elsewhere as its launch falls into what Apple considers Q3 2015
