Apple iPhones And iPads Will Be Banned In Russia From New Year’s Day 2015--Report

pretty sure China makes these overpriced iphones. the fatcats are the ones getting wealthy off it

Russia can make knockoffs, but they don't have have the name power of APPLE that goes with it.

just like expensive cars you want to own a Mercedes or BMW because it's a status symbol. you could have Russia make something equivalent for domestic use or even export, but it doesn't have the NAME or reputation that goes with it :azn:

. . .
It's unclear what Russia hopes to achieve with this move. Russia of course will slightly decrease Apple's gargantuan profits, but it will also harm Foxconn's operations in China (and thus China's export statistics). Not to mention the Russian consumers who like Apple products, and will now have to pay exorbitant prices to import them or procure them through the black market.

If Russia is serious about this issue, it will be forced to use domestically produced phones (are there competitive domestic brands in Russia?) or Chinese phones. But China is even more opaque about data storage than the US, so Russia would simply be trading the risk of US spying for the risk of Chinese spying.

The other way to look at this is that Russia's leadership, in its desperation, has adopted a cargo-cult mentality: China has a great firewall and chauvinistic procurement policy, and look at how well it's done! If we adopt the same restrictive measures, we too can prosper!

I'm not sure it works that way.
how will it hurt china if every smartphone is made in china including russian ones?

chinese phones have still not an own OS so it doesnt effect them. IOS is completely owned by apple and built around their cloud service

they should get used to it.

i doubt apple want to lose russian market and except it but neither i except them making russian servers as they are too ignorant closed minded american company, they will remove their stupid cloud feature. But it will hurt them in the long run as it will benefit other phone manufacturers.

When in Rome, do as the Romans tell you to do.

That particular company, and any company for that matter, should respect and conform to the laws of the nation or face consequences.

I am sure the said company will not like the prospects of losing a 140 million market.

But, overall, from Russian and China's material perspective, it is a welcome development. More room for growth for homegrown producers.

Remember, Chinese officials are banned from using the said devices as well as a number of software of foreign origin.

Geopolitically, more diversion and distrust between Russia and the US is an opportunity for greater China-Russia cooperation, which are, by the way, out building a comprehensive cyber-security mechanism.

you know the customer is always right.
if Russians want an iphone they'll get it no matter what the government says or does.

.
why ban it? they store their data in america.
Ha! along with the vast bulk of the internet... Google caches everything, and the NSA, and maybe Yahoo! and a few other companies.

But I don't and won't buy Apple products. Over priced, over-hyped. If you want to ban them, knock yourselves out. But if you're using the internet at all, you're dealing with America. The internet is, at it's core, American (for now).

Apple iPhones And iPads Will Be Banned In Russia From New Year’s Day 2015--Report - International Business Times

  • Pavithra Rathinavel | November 5, 2014 3:34 PM EST

On Tuesday, a new report was published in Russia, creating uproar and concerns. Based on the report, Russia will be forbidding retailers from selling the Apple iPhone and iPaddevices starting from Jan. 1, 2015 i.e. New Year's Day. Notably, this ban includes the latestiPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Looking at the report, one would think, this recent development could be the aftermath of dismantling Steve Jobs' memorial in St. Petersburg. Owing to the fact that, Apple CEO Tim Cook, publicly announced that he is gay. But then, the real reason behind this ban is, in fact, Apple's cloud storage service, the iCloud. Therefore, the Russian authorities' ban on Apple products has got nothing to do with Tim Cooks' confession, says Phone Arena.

According to the new Russian law, the ban is applicable to any device that uses Apple's iCloud. As readers would have guessed already, the obvious reason is that the user data saved in the iCloud is not stored locally. Apple's iCloud servers are located in the U.S. and not in Russia. Nevertheless, readers should note that this regulation is not created to take down Apple products. Instead, the rule is applicable to all online services. This includes all the different social networking sites as well.

To counter this rule, Apple can move the Russian users' data to servers based out of the country. However, this move will set a wrong precedence for the company, says the same site. Meaning, many other countries might follow suit with such demands in future. Furthermore, Russia might even obligate the ban at the retail level, making it even more difficult for the Cupertino based tech giant. This also means Russian iPhone or iPad owners that use iCloud may have to go through continual scrutiny by the Russian authorities.

It is worth mentioning that, back in September, Shanghai government authorities banned the use of foreign smartphones. Needles to say, Apple's iPhone models were part of the targeted list. China's People's Daily, which is apparently the official newspaper of the Communist Party, announced the ban via a tweet. "Shanghai authorities has [sic] ordered all cadres to use China-made smartphones only, a forum organized by [Beijing] University said Friday," according to the publication.

how is america owning the internet if 40% is owned by russia and china. Your own map you posted shows it

Look at the size of the dots. Google alone is bigger than the top 5 chinese sites, and that does NOT include all the local Google sites. 3 or 4 American sites are bigger than the total area of Russia - Russia collectively does not attract 45% of internet users (not that many people even speak Russian or are willing to translate). The black space doesn't count, only the area inside the circles.

Yangdex.ru is the biggest site in Russia, gets visits from 2.47% of internet users. Google gets 45%, 20 times as much.

World rankings, per that Internet map:
1) Google 45% of internet users visit Google
2) Facebook 41%
3) Youtube 32%
4) Yahoo! 15%
5) Baidu 13% (Chinese)
6) Wikipedia 12%
7) Amazon 9%
8) Twitter 8%
9) qq 7% (Chinese)
10) Taobao 6% (Chinese)
...
14) Sina 5% (Chinese)
....
20) Yangdex.ru 2.8%

Couldn't find the 5th Chinese site, I expect its in the 5% range atm.

In the short term, the US is the center of the internet. Too much of the tech is designed and introduced here. China will surpass the US in the medium term, as it simply has more people. Whether this means it takes center stage on the internet is a bit of a question, as China has not been as good at getting others to adopt it's services as the US has - see Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc. It will be interesting to see if Alibaba is able to go international. I don't see Russia being competitive in the foreseeable future. Doesn't use common latin script, doesn't have the population or wealth, and has made itself unpopular outside of its home country (with the possible exceptions of poor regimes nearby, which won't help as they are not interested in Russian culture, China particularly).

The up-and-coming countries, the ones that could match the US eventually are China, India, and Brazil. In the long run, Nigeria may be able to become a player. They have vibrant, growing cultures, and are not bent on scaring the hell out of their neighbors (well, maybe China, a little). Russia is shrinking. It is a closed culture, in the sense of being very inward looking, not open to outside influences, with very restrictive regulatory rules on information dissemination. Not a recipe for taking over the Internet. Sorry, your country is in the Internet's backwaters and likely to stay that way.

The traffic map show Europe having a large role in the world, but Russia is not "Europe" only a small outlying piece of the whole. UK, France and Germany are the central players. In any case, the US link with Asia is stronger than Europe's link, and Europe is barely linked to S America at all. Europe has better links only with Africa - not exactly a major player at this time.

cool story bro, so this means 45% of servers are located in USA? nope they arent, if china and russia get more developed more people will have internet and you will see where your google is.
The map clearly shows that russia has bigger size than germany

LOL do you realize that Russia using not latin script is the exact reason why they have still a chance. Almost the entire world obeys America. Why? Because they are using latin script, its not a strength but a cultural weakness and open door to be invaded by US culture.

As you can see the only exceptions are China which is using Baidu, Russia & Eurasian union which are using yandex or other russian sites and korea using Naver. Japan is using yahoo.JP which is joint venture betweenjapanese company softbank and yahoo.

Europe is totally Americanized and has no own alternative.

It will be interesting to see if Alibaba is able to go international.
LOL alibaba is allready international where do you think all ebayers get their cheap stuff from to sell? They go to alibaba and sell it for more money on ebay and amazon. Which simple minded folks like you are buying. Alibaba is the ebay for resellers, shop ali is the ebay version for consumers from alibaba. You dont even know what youre talking about its pathetic
