my dad suffering with urination related problem from past few weeks. . After consulting Doctor ..enlarged prostate (BPH) is diagnosed. .Medicines gave partial relief ... Doc suggested for surgery .. Done some tests... After looking the results got doubt about Prostate cancer. ...
Prostate size ..63gm
Dad age nearly 60
PSA 4.44ng
free PSA 0.59ng
Doctor said need biopsy as PSA crossed 2.5ng ..PSA shouldn't cross 2.5ng ..There is possibility of prostate cancer ... i am worried about it... Is there possibility of cancer ...

What are the cut off level for PSA...
PSA varies from person to person , but generally it will be in the range 2.5 to 3ng , so I fear ur Dad might have a possible prostate cancer nevertheless it will be wise to undergo further tests..

Thanks for the info mate. See I just matched the symptoms and as per your answers, I don't think there's any possibility of cancer or anything like that. But still as i said i am not any doc or even nurse. And BTW did doctor say anything about the possiblity of cancer?

I found Symptoms of cancer from this site:

Understanding Prostate Cancer - Symptoms

. And try searching websites which provide chat facilities to doctor and try consulting from them. I'll search and if i find any website i'll tell you.

What are the cut off level for PSA...

Well, cutoff level varies, it depends on many factors like age. Since your father is 60 and he's Asian cutoff should be 4 ng/ml.

I think doctor treating your father is on right track - given enlarged prostate, increase in PSA (total) with a decrease fraction of free PSA does sound suspicious. Biopsy at this stage is very important!

.
who said that PSA shouldnt cross 2.5 ?

thats not a professional thing to say !! PSA increases as we age . especially when ur dad has got benign prostate enlargment which increases the PSA levels itself .

4.4 is considered high border line , but this doesnt mean that ur father has got cancer . only biopsy can define that .

u cannot rule out urinary infection or prostatitis or any sort of inflamation as the synergist of this increase too .

i would order another BT for ur father if i were u . biopsy is the next step

yes But BPH is enlarged ... is there any possibility elevated PSA is due to BPH ..I know BPH is non cancerous.. He is almost 60y ears old.. and prostate size is 63.6gms. .. how much possibility is there fr cancer and non cancer...

In BPH both the forms of PSA are elevated proportionally. But in medical sciences there are no hard and fast rules.

strange in a way that doctors normally order another test . increase in bound PSA can have a heck lot of reasons .

an increase in albumine blood levels (if i'm not wrong ) can be the cause for ex.

@ResurgentIran what do u suggest doc ?

You guys have no idea what you are talking about. The solution to all medical problems is to lay down and rest. This is accepted by the whole world.
