An Aug. 5, 2014, analysis in this column said Koç Holding’s armored vehicle manufacturer Otokar could face a challenge from BMC in a contract to build 1,000 indigenous main battle tanks, despite being the creator of a prototype of the armored carrier, the Altay. Fourteen months later, BMC’s boss Ethem Sancak whose personal friendship with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is well-known, said his company would bid for the multibillion-dollar tank contract. Sancak said BMC would join the bidding with foreign partners he declined to name.

Otokar designed, developed and is producing four prototypes, under a $500 million contract, of the Altay, the new-generation Turkish tank, but a much bigger contract for its serial production is in the offing.

Defense procurement authorities will officially launch the contract for the serial production of the Altay after the prototype program has been completed.

Only a few months after a June 2013 political row between Koç and the government, the group’s shipyards lost a nearly $2 billion deal which it had won on an interim basis. That row has already subsided, but Sancak is a challenging newcomer in the armor market.

The first major public tension between Koç and Erdoğan’s government emerged in 2013 during the Gezi Park protests. In one incident during the month-long anti-government demonstrations, protesters attempted to escape police tear gas and pepper spray by taking refuge in an Istanbul hotel, the Divan, owned by Koç. Hotel management admitted the protesters into its lobby, which quickly turned into a makeshift first aid room

What means 'undermine state authority' and is it a crime in Turkey to be connected with George Soros?

Do they (companies) has the capability to to this job?

.
strange because when I was living in Turkiye (I worked for a Koc Holdings company but it wasnt Otokar it was Ford Otosan) I was under impression that Koc family had a good working relationship with Erdogan/AKP but i guess those were the times when all business corporations were in favour of AKP b/c of its pro-business policies they did a good job in Istanbul when Erdogan was mayor.

Now it seems AKP has more of a religious/ideological political agenda......too many scandals, and too many wars with Turkish media groups. It's not healthy for Tukiye when the country's executives (PM) uses retaliation and threats to stifle opposition.

If you are in media or finance or manufacturing - dont butt heads with AKP govt. b/c they will find reasons to crush you or embarass you. That's how I see the situation.

Elections are coming up next month right?

Do Koc have capability to build a tank? Most of the equpments will be funded by the SSM. Koc is nothing but a burden for this country, ther imperium of the only company is gone. Ther are more companies with cheaper offering, if you can keep up you will get the project. First of all, the prototype of the Altay they had zero experience like others. Matured something doesn't mean they will get the 3 billion tank production:-).

SSM is offering other big companies to gain experince with goverment contracts. Nobody nows what is behind the decision and nobody can demand that Koc must have the production line. The problem with Turkish industries is the companies are not ready to invest big money, so they are working fifthy fifthy. This is for me a burden, how can a defence industry grow in the private sector? So i am happy that ther is more then one company.

kkl
I bet BMC will get the contract with its foreign partners just because of being buddy with Erdogan.
koc has so many company.do you think they can focus and improve altay in the future..?but koc is better company for sure.they had alot more experiences.

.
Both, BMC & Otokar has now new facilities or getting new places to build one, if there will be one that will produce those Tanks, then only these Companies has the capability to make it. We should not forget FNSS, they are to suitable for this Project.

. . .
As a capitalist I am of course against Koc. The whole enterprise is a giant monopoly that prevents competition in the market. One should smash the Koc company.
