BAREILLY: Three army officers were killed after their Cheetah helicopter crashed in Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh this morning.

The accident took place at around 7.45 am, moments after the army helicopter took off from an army aviation base. Two pilots and an engineer were killed.

The helicopter was reportedly on a testing flight. Just two minutes after take-off, it reportedly caught fire and crashed.

The army has been trying to get replacements for its 40-year-old Cheetahs but has failed because of corruption scandals and bureaucratic delays.

To summaries the Bangla post; according to Janes Defence weekly, Indian Navy has finalized to establish a new base in the rambili region, 50 Km from the Eastern Naval Command in Visakh. A naval dockyard already exists at the site. The base would be operational by 2021/2022 and named as "INS Varosa".

The base would be established to counter the expanding Chinese Influence in the Indian Ocean Region and particularly the Bay of Bengal. The INS Vikramaditya carrier Group and about 5/6 Nuclear/Conventional Submarines with ICBM's would be based in INS Varosa.



India is wary of the growing influence of the Chinese Navy in it's backyard, according to Indian Defence Observers and wants to counter the Chinese String of Pearls stretching from Gwadar to Myanmar.



Anyone can understand that the Janes article is written by an Indian or with an Indian Perspective.



India even officially protested/complained to China, regarding supply of Ming class submarines to Bangladesh (even though off the shelf and more or less antiquated), Myanmar has plans to procure Russian Kilo's. It wouldn't be surprising if in the near future Sri lanka has Submarine procurement Plans or China offers them off the shelf subs in the most friendly price/terms. Pakistan already has a formidable under water capability.



To speak rationally, it is not necessary that all these Nations would gang up against the Indian Navy or pose any serious threat but the point is, in order to counter or keep a track of these Subs in the neighborhood even during peace time, India would require to deploy a higher number of Platforms and the operational cost of the navy would also increase. Added to that IN's dwindling Sub numbers have already started ringing alarm bells.



It is very easy to identify and pin point the location of a surface platform/flagged vessel like a Corvette or a Frigate, but very difficult to identify a submarine underwater (no matter how obsolete the platform is), how would they know, whether it is a Chinese sub or a Bangladeshi or a Myanmarese sub lurking beneath, the eastern command has already flagged concerns that Chinese subs may enter Indian territorial waters near the Bagladeshi coasts, if Bangladesh inducts submarines. And now a PLAN sub pops out in Sri Lanka!!
