NEW DELHI: In a significant development amid the ongoing push for indigenisation of military weapon systems, the made-in-India Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Mark1A would be fitted with the 'Uttam' radar and the 'Angad' electronic warfare suite, replacing the imported systems installed previously.

The Uttam Active Electronically Scanned Array radar and Angad electronic warfare suite are being developed indigenously and will be ready to be integrated with the LCA Mark-1A aircraft very soon, defence officials told ANI.

The Indian Air Force has already placed orders for 83 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets and going to place orders for another 97 in the near future.

"From the 41st aircraft onwards to the order for 83 LCA Mark1A planes, the electronic warfare suite and the AESA radar would be made in India, enhancing the extent of the indigenous content in these aircraft, replacing the imported systems," a source said.

The projects are being implemented by different laboratories of the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

The push for retrofitting the LCA with indigenous weapon systems is also tipped to save millions in foreign exchange while creating employment opportunities in the defence industry.

The Uttam radar has also shown very promising results in the development phase and has even been considered for deployment in high-end fighter jets, sources informed.

According to plans of the Indian Air Force, these made-in-India aircraft will replace the MiG-series fighter jets in its fleet, sources said, adding that the plans have been submitted to the Defence Ministry and before all other stakeholders in the national security establishment.

The Indian Air Force Chief (IAF), Air chief Marshal VR Chaudhari also held a review meeting recently with all involved parties, including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, with regard to the indigenous fighter jet program.

The Indian Air Force would also be using a more capable version of the Uttam radar on the LCA-Mark2 and future indigenous fighter aircraft being developed by Indian agencies.

This is one of the best thing developed by India about Aero industry.

Uttam Radar - need to continuously improve it for future aircrafts

. . . .
Yeah, whats wrong with it- The Chinese have been doing the same for many decades.

At least, it is not a clone or copy as similar done by the Chinese Aero manufacturing industry.
But they start to developing their defense products from scratch their copy and clone era is long gone

Your uttam is based on Israeli elta elm 2052

No it is not.

I mean it is better than nothing. Plus Israeli radars are good. India is doing exactly what China did with the Soviets. China got the know-how from the Soviet industry and now the chineses built their own sophisticated systems

The Uttam isn't based on the technology of the Elta 2052. Work on the AESA radar has been going on for well before anything related to Elta 2052 assembly was agreed to, with the orders for the Jaguar DARIN 3 and Tejas Mk1As.

Similarly, the work on the EW suite has been going on for a long time and is finally coming close to fruition. It is not based on the Elta 8222 WB SPJ but rather DRDO's own work on the pod for well over a decade.

. .
Airframe yes but in terms of electronics the the clone/copy era is over for them

still, Chinese technology is no match for Western technology; they are one step behind

Since Pakistan is purchasing Chinese technology, you want to believe and trust that it is the best, but actually, they still need to catch up to the level of Western technology. Even now, the Russians are also behind.

We are not saying that and we knows that they are not best but in terms of electronics they ahead of Russia catching up EU but you're right they are 15 years or so behind the US in terms of electronics

Ok thank you for clarifications. But I mean in general there is nothing wrong to clone so you can build your own defense industry.
